After today's (15 February) news that Coldplay will headline the Saturday (25 June) night at Glastonbury Festival 2011, Dane Cobain looks to the past to see what we can expect come June.

With three Glastonbury performances under their belt already (including a headline spot), Coldplay are regarded by some as returning veterans and by others as annoying guests that refuse to leave. If you ignore all the hype and controversy over the festival's headliners and look at Coldplay as a live band, what are you left with?

Here’s VF top five Coldplay shows at festivals:

5 – ‘Yellow’ at Glastonbury Festival 2000“I don’t know how to introduce this,” says a 23-year-old Chris Martin, looking blinded by the Somerset sun. “Hopefully this time next year you’ll sing along with it because it’ll be a hit.” Over a decade ago, the band played on the Other Stage looking like they’d just wandered in from their lectures. Despite the baby-faces of the band-members, the audience could sense a hit in the making.

4 – ‘In My Place’ at V Festival 2003

By now, Chris Martin had accepted and embraced his lack of choreography, prancing around the stage like a king with a wireless microphone. As the song breaks down, he encourages the crowd to make noise and they promptly obey. A star in the making, Chris walks offstage in the last verse and leaves the audience to sign off, probably so he can look for new girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow backstage.

3 – ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ at Glastonbury Festival 2005

Dressed in black and sporting facial hair that took five years to grow, Coldplay “salute absent friends” with a rendition of Kylie’s ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’, crowning a well-received headline slot. Kylie had to cancel her appearance at the farm after being treated for breast cancer, but returned in 2010 to perform with the Scissor Sisters. Required viewing for anybody planning to head to Worthy Farm this year.

2 – ‘Clocks’ at Isle of Wight Festival 2006

Not many people associate lasers, previously the props for DJs and sci-fi loving metal bands, with Coldplay, the champion of middle-class housewives. Nevertheless, they fly about through clouds of smoke as the crowd dances with glow-sticks and Chris Martin wails like a melodic but angry cat on the piano bench. They’ve clearly been boosted by the success of their Glastonbury headline slot and their year-long Twisted Logic tour.

1 – ‘Viva La Vida’ at Rock Werchter 2009

There’s something about the crowd singing along, the army jacket, the George in the Jungle beat, the unexplained television on the stage and the confidence that exudes from the band like the sweat on Chris Martin’s face that says “we’ve arrived”. Coldplay are finally, without a doubt, a stadium band. But a worthy headliner for Glastonbury 2011? You decide.
