I try to find out how to play the new version of "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face". Can somebody find out the chord which Chris is playing at the beginning with the e-guitar?

ya it's quite simple

tune the guitar as that, low to high:

C#-G#-C#-F-C#-C#

then thumb always used on lowest C# string

i'll note down the chords and their variations only; as we're musicians and learn by doing, it would be no use writing down everything, that's more work than necessary i guess... if you're not able to learn it by listening then, you're not supposed to play the song now and should go practice first :P

C#|0000 these high C# strings may always sound open and may be hit unintentionally

C#|0000---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

F...|-8-(10)-------7-(10)-(8)----------5-(7)------------------------

C#|-9-------------7---------------------5----------------------------

G#|---------------(0)------------------------------------------------

C#|-9-------------7---------------------5----------------------------

-----Bbm---------Ab--------------------Gb---------<<very basic chord names

last chord is just all strings stroke open^^

if the chords for the rest are unclear: the low C# and G# strings are both fretted with the thumb (at least it's easy to play it that way)

C#|-0---0---0---0------0---0---0

C#|-0---0---0---0------0---0---0

F...|-0---3---2---1------8---3---5

C#|-0---3---2---1------8---3---5

G#|-0---3---2---1------8---3---5

C#|-0---3---2---1------8---3---5

----for the verses------for the chorus&bridge(=end here)

easy one, right? =)

enjoy (and c'mon, lead guitar hasn't changed)

are you sure to turn low to high? :o

edit: just came to think of it, low to high means from lowest to highest string! not tune all up! the > and < below indicate whether to tune up or down

so yes, this is the correct tuning:

e>c#

B<c#

G>F

D>C#

A>G#

E>C#

But there's one chord he plays without thumb wrapped around the low C# string.....what chord could it be ??

When he plays the Ab variation with the F-string played at the 10th fret, he hits an open low C# (that's the chord you're seeing without the thumb wrapped around). Then, when he moves down the F-string to the 8th and 7th fret, he brings his thumb back around to hold down the low C#-string at the 7th fret.

I love the new guitar line, it's nice, but the vocal melody does NOT go with it at all, it's as if he's singing in a different key.

Haha I know exactly what you mean. When I first heard this version of the song I literally thought Chris had the wrong key. But then I realised I was wrong when the rest of the band came in. It really didn't sound right at all! :D
