Business Matters: How the Billboard Music Awards Drives Artists' Amazon Rankings

The 9.47 million viewers who tuned in for Sunday evening's Billboard Music Awards did a good bit of music shopping. MP3 albums of participating and nominated artists rose sharply in the rankings at the Amazon store while individual tracks benefited as well. A ranking here represents the title's status immediately after the broadcast ended.

Taylor Swift's Red jumped nearly 40 spots in paid MP3 albums. Swift took home eight awards including Top Artist, Top Female Artist and Top Billboard 200 artist. She also performed the song "22." Red had already sold 3.7 million units in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

One Direction's "Take Me Home" rose over 100 spots while "Up All Night" rose more than 65 spots in paid MP3 albums. The group was nominated for Top Artist and both Take Me Home and Up All Night were nominated for Top Album.

Old albums benefitted from the broadcast. Adele's 21 jumped nearly 30 spots to 91 in paid MP3 albums. Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto rose almost 60 spots in the same rankings.

Individual songs didn't get the same boost as albums. Fun.'s "Some Nights" moved up 5 spots in MP3 songs. Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" and Maroon 5's "One More Night" each rose 2 spots. "Payphone" by Maroon 5 and Wiz Khalifa moved up just 1 spot.

While television appearances always help an artist, awards shows broadcast nationally during prime-time hours tend to have an immediate impact on digital sales. During the 2013 Grammy Awards some of the top albums didn't get much of a boost from the broadcast because they were already ranked so high. The sales ranks of MP3 albums by the Lumineers and Mumford and Sons, which both performed that evening, barely budged upward because each was on sale at $3.99.
