David Brent to support Coldplay?

David Brent to support Coldplay live

Ricky Gervais's Office character will strut his stuff on stage with the big boys, Lee Evans just wants to sit and paint, and we enjoy some scientific one-liners from our readers

Some detail has been added to recent reports that Ricky Gervais is to take David Brent and his guitar on the road, with the news – as reported in the Sun – that Brent is to support Coldplay on their next tour. According to the tabloid: "Ricky has already got a date booked in to support Coldplay at Hammersmith Apollo when they start to test new material on fans." Gervais has previous with the band, of course. In series 2 of Extras, his character from faux-sitcom When the Whistle Blows duets with Coldplay crooner Chris Martin on the band's ballad Fix You – a song that Gervais also uses on the soundtrack to his C4 series Derek. Now it appears the pair are to take their double-act up to arena level…

"as reported in The Sun", "according to the tabloid"

It feels really too big and awesome to be true, I think (the whole "testing new material on fans" part. Ricky Gervais is kewl but I mean that's not what I'd be the most excited about ).

Hmmm The Guardian... it's not april fools right?

not sure what to think, but DAMN :awesome:

edit: oh, The Sun :dozey:

Funnily enough, Ricky used to sing lead in a glam rock band, was pretty good (by glam rock standards).

By the way, I saw the new Rolling Stone out of the corner of my eye at a drugstore today, nearly had a freakout when I saw the cover, I thought it was Chris. It wasn't. It was Macklemore.

Ricky Gervais NOT Touring with Coldplay, But Will Do Charity Show With Them

On the red carpet at the premiere Thursday night at the Museum of Modern Art of Netflix’s new series “Derek,” written and starring Ricky Gervais, I asked the comedy genius behind “The Office” and “Extras” about reports [in the UK Sun and picked up elsewhere as fact] that he is going to take David Brent and bring his guitar on the road to play with pal Chris Martin of Coldplay on their next tour. (Currently Gervais’ Internet series, “Learn Guitar With David Brent,” is on YouTube.)

“No,” he said. “They’re actually going to play with me at a charity event. But I don’t know if that’s gone out because it’s a secret, so I don’t know where that came from.”

Ricky Gervais announces David Brent and Foregone Conclusion gig in Bristol

Announcement made on Gervais's Twitter account for gig at Bristol's Colston Hall on 16 December

David Brent and Foregone Conclusion are to play another gig, this time in Bristol.

Comedian Ricky Gervais revealed the extra date on Twitter on 28 October, announcing that his much-loved character from The Office, paper-merchant-turned-indie-frontman Brent, will play Colston Hall on 16 December. Tickets go on sale on 1 November at 10am.

Brent played two work-in-progress gigs earlier this month at the Bloomsbury theatre in London, rattling through "hits" Freelove Freeway, Slough and Equality Street and swigging from a can of Foster's throughout. Tickets for those performances at the 500-seat venue sold out almost immediately, with some ending up being touted for prices up to £1,000.

Generally speaking, reviews were positive. The Guardian's comedy critic Brian Logan, while acknowledging that Brent's material was not "particularly sophisticated musical comedy," declared the gig "great fun".

"I defy you to love The Office – as I do – and not experience a shiver of pleasure to see its naff antihero swagger onstage here in aviators, nasty waistcoat and a silver ring in his ear," Logan wrote.

Others were equally enthusiastic. The Independent delighted in his return, saying "there is no-one who can bring on a full-body cringe like Brent," while both the Evening Standard and comedy website Chortle picked Lady Gypsy as the best of the songs.

The latest gig might lend some credence to the rumour that Brent could be on his way to Wembley Arena. The band, which includes former Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows, are also reportedly set to support Coldplay at the Hammersmith Apollo. For now, though, David Brent will have to settle for Bristol.

Ricky Gervais hints at David Brent O2 Arena gig as Bristol show sells out instantly

Comedian Ricky Gervais has confirmed that his gig in Bristol as The Office's David Brent sold out instantly, with over 18,000 people trying to get tickets for the show.

Gervais, as Brent, and his backing band Foregone Conclusion will play live at Colston Hall in Bristol on December 16. Shortly after tickets for the gig went on sale this morning (November 1), Gervais took to his Twitter account to post the news that all of the tickets for the show had gone and hinted at a future show at London's O2 Arena.

Earlier this month, the comedian played two work-in-progress gigs with former Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London rattling through tracks like 'Freelove Freeway', which previously featured in The Office, 'Slough' and 'Equality Street' while swigging from a can of Fosters throughout. Tickets for both shows sold out in under a minute and subsequently appeared on a secondary ticketing site for more than £1,000 each.

18,000 ticket requests in the first minute of being on sale. #DavidBrent is certainly back! Brent turned his hand to music in May. Having revived the character for the BBC’s Comic Relief this year, Gervais issued an online series, Learn Guitar With David Brent, which was the character’s first recurring role since The Office concluded in 2003.
