Rockers Coldplay have been accused of approaching their music careers like "f***ing middle-class businessmen" who are only motivated by money.

 

The Yellow hitmakers have fallen victim to the scathing tongue of cult The Fall singer Mark E. Smith who recounts the time an American taxi driver overheard the band discussing business in the back of his cab - leading him to believe they were stockbrokers.

 

And charismatic Smith insists if singer Chris Martin and his bandmates were his children, he'd dress them in suits and send them off to get a "proper job", instead of releasing music to earn their millions.

 

He tells Britain's Jack magazine, "I got this taxi in America, and I always say I'm a building engineer if anybody asks, though I told this particular driver I was a sound engineer.

 

"And he said, 'How's business?' and I said, 'It's alright apart from musicians.' And he goes, 'It's funny you should say that because I picked up three guys the other day, three British guys like you, and they were going on about 25 per cent this and 25 per cent that and five per cent this and they looked pretty scruffy.'

 

"So he got them to where they were going and said, 'Have a good day, hope you have a good stockbroker meeting,' and they go, 'What's that? We're Coldplay!' And he goes to me, 'Have you heard of Coldplay?' I said, 'Yeah, they're big in Britain.' And he said, 'I thought they were f***ing three f***ing stockbrokers.' And I said, 'You're damn right.'

 

"'Cos that's what they are, f***ing middle-class businessmen. 'Cos their moms and dads are all bank managers, money is all they're bothered about. If they were my children I'd say, 'Get a f***ing proper job. Do something useful. Be a scientist.'"

I would think that all people who get up there in the music business think about money, though. I wouldn't blame them.

It says three of them though, Chris was usually the missing one because he was always with Gwyneth. The thing is Chris is middle class one, Will, Guy and Jonny aren't (well, in comparison) - so it's all bullsh*t :angry: :angry:

That blok has obviously forgotten that coldplay are musicians because they are talented and deserve to be where they are today.

Anyways, if they're talented, then I guess they deserve the money anyways.

If you're a stockbroker, you're talented. If you're a good musician, you're still talented.

But what if it is true? I don't think any of us have any way of knowing one way or another ...

 

... and in the end it doesn't really matter. I honestly could care less how much Coldplay want money. Doesn't matter to me.

 

If they have used it as motivation for their music, targeting a certain audience, I'm sure people will get tired of them as their crowd will eventually move away from their music. But we don't know if or when that will happen.

Talent is often rewarded with large sums of money, it's just the way it is. I mean look how much footballers get. David Beckham gets paid a disgusting amount of money, something like £10,000 a week :stunned:

Well I think coldplay deserve therewards they recieve.

I think the underlying point here might be that we probably shouldn't devote much time to thinking about Benham's or Martin's or any celebrity's finanaces because, for the most part:

 

1) That's not the reason they are celebrities.

2) Most celebrities don't promote or publicize their wealth.

3) It doesn't affect out intereaction with that celebrity.

 

This fixation with other people's monies really fascinated me. Why should I care as long as I have enough money on which to survive?

 

I guess people generally want to hear about these types of things or else the media would spend less time covering them, but I don't get it.

Not at all, if I like the music and they've put passion into it then I would still buy it, go to their concerts, after all it is their job.

 

All I meant was (in my opinion) this Mark E. Smith guy has got it wrong because when I see Chris talk about making music I see passion and adoration for what he does. He has a 1st class university degree, if he wanted a job just to makes tonnes of money, he could get one.

That's cool.

 

I wouldn't invest too much on what a celebrity says in interviews, though. Well, I actually could see why somebody would, but ...
