Decide The Future Of Coldplay: A Real Life Situation Game

Recommended Posts

Let's face it, there has never been a concept like this on the forum.

  • This idea is a game where I put a short piece of information about Coldplay in the early days, starting from 2000. The objective of the game is to (as a group) decide what Coldplay as a band is to do in each year. From this passage forwards, they've only released one studio album 'Parachutes'. Your job as a team is to write the goals which Coldplay want to achieve each year.
  • You decide it all, the album cover art, which you can design yourselves, the tracks (they have to be created already until we get to the 2010's, which you can make tracks up yourself), the relationships the band gets in (EG Chris & Gwen), and the tours, set out and set lists of the LIVE shows.
  • You have 16 years to plan. Plan one year at a time and then post them here, and I'll upload the year in full so you know what happened that year.
  • DONT PLAN ALL THE YEARS IN ONE. START with 2001, wait for the info and then plan 2002.

I'll begin with the info from 2000.

2000

The year of 2000 has been quite a year for the British alternative rock band Coldplay. They have officially released their first LP 'Parachutes' to wide critical acclaim, and started a short tour in which they have played the album in its entirety, along with some B Sides and covers. However, the year also emerged some criticism due to their uncanny resemblance to Oxford band Radiohead, who returned to the scene with the unique, different and path changing 'Kid A' earlier this year. Chris Martin, leader of the band has cited them as one of their main influences, along with Irish band U2 & Scottish band Travis. The band have also released some singles of the album, the most succesful being 'Yellow', described as the current 'indie anthem' and has charted highly for it to be heard by radio audiences. Also in the year, Coldplay recorded an exclusive acoustic EP for listeners to enjoy, featuring a selection of melancholy tunes. Now they set to embark on a lengthy world tour in 2001, before going back into the studio to record their follow up.

2001

The year of 2001 begins after the huge success of 'Parachutes', where Coldplay go on a world tour to promote the album. These concerts feature album material, as well as rarities from early EP's and unreleased Starfish tracks. The concerts would usually last 3 hours. It has earned the group praise from the editors of the NME and their hardcore fans, quoting each show to be an 'experience' and a 'post-Britpop phenomenon'. Some have even noted the show has comparisons to Prog Rock legends Rush and Pink Floyd, with guitarist Jonny Buckland playing for 45mins solo. Due to this, Coldplay lost their 'bed-wetting' phase and are now entering their 'Progressive Britpop' phase. This has now set them apart from their counterparts. And due to a massive increase in demand, the Safety EP was re-released, with a pressing of 1,000,000 copies. Not only was this the biggest year for the band yet, but it also earned them a hit with 'Bigger Stronger', debuting at No 1. Also present this year was Martin's charity work, donating album sales to the British Heart Foundation and other major causes. At the end of the year, Martin made his protest clear as well, storming into the meeting this December of the UN Security Council after the terrible, awful and tragic events in New York. He ran into the hall demanding world peace with a banner reading 'GIVE ME LOVE OVER THIS!!!!!!!'. Overall, it has earned him the nickname 'The People's Champion'. As well as that, rumours are circling that Buckland may shape the next album's sound: he has been inspired by Jazz. People have guessed this as he seemed to add a Miles Davis element during Everything's Not Lost on the tour. Not all the band is happy with this, and they plan to discuss soon. Their next album is set to be released the following year, entitled 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'.

In 2001, Coldplay go on a world tour to promote their album Parachutes. They make 3-hour long concerts in which they not only play tracks from Parachutes, but also from Safety and Brothers and Sisters as well as some unreleased tracks from their Starfish times. In the middle of each three-hour concert is a 45-mins Pink Floydesque progressive rock piece in which Jonny Buckland performs solo and demonstrates his virtouos use of slide technique.

Thanks to growing popularity, the Safety EP is re-released with a pressing of 1.000.000 copies and Bigger Stronger promptly lands on No.1 of the UK charts. The EP is sold out within days of its release and Coldplay donate the entire profit from the Safety EP sales to charity.

During a meeting of the UN Security Council debating on 9/11 and the imminent Afghanistan war, Chris Martin storms into the hall with a banner asking for world peace and screaming "Give me love over this !"

2002

The year of 2002 begins. The band are exhausted after their long-lasting Parachutes world tour, and begin to start work on their next album, 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'. Before recording, Buckland is persuaded to STOP playing Jazz, to avoid any such influence of that genre being put into the record. This album is set to become a 13 track long record, with influences ranging from long influence Radiohead, Echo & The Bunnymen and The Smiths. In spring of this year, Martin announced the two lead singles which would both be released on the same day, the ambitious 'I Ran Away' and the slightly nostalgic sounding 'A View From The Top'. Needless to say, it was a great idea to release them both on the same day. It not only got both tracks to number one and two in the charts respectively, but also earned the group their first Brit nomination, competing in the 'Best British Single' catorgry, alongside Muse with 'Bliss' and Radiohead with 'I Might Be Wrong'. The band then released their long-awaited second effort on the 26th August. It was highly acclaimed by both critics, fans and casual listeners. Some compared it to being 'piano-rock with an ambient flavour' and 'Radiohead's little brother'. In fact, it was so well received that Pitchfork Media, a long time dismisser of Coldplay had given them the highest score of that year, a 9.5/10. People began calling it the best thing about the second year of the new milenium. Other singles which were released in 2002 were 'In My Place', the ballad 'The Scientist', 'Clocks' (which earned them a Grammy nomination), 'Politik' (in which Matt Bellamy of Muse helped write) and 'God Put A Smile Upon Your Face', which was a folk-rock/alternative rock track inspired by PJ Harvey. In the Winter, Martin recieved a call from electronic artist and producer Moby and one of his idols, Thom Yorke. They ask him whether they want help with the third effort that would follow AROBTTH. Martin is thrilled and immedietely tells Buckland, Berryman and Champion. On the 28th December, they began their new AROBTTH world tour, which would last for '2 years straight', Martin said in a press conference. On the 29th December, just before the new year, Coldplay also began filming the new music video for 'I Ran Away', and a week later, the 'entirely backwards' 'The Scientist' video.
