I think my theory was flawed...

 

ok

 

starts with 30

 

30(original) - 5 = 25

 

5 - 3(given back) = 2

 

25 + 2(kept) = 27

 

27 + 3 (given back) = 30

 

So ... there's your missing crazy E.

 

but if each man got £1 back and they each paid £10 originally that means they each paid in total £9 for their room... and the waiter only got £2... where is the missing gold coin :wink3:
