Let me just jump in here for a sec. FOB=Mainstream Pop Punk; Frontrunner of its genre Onerepublic=Mainstream Pop rock;Frontrunner of its genre Both of their music is on that mainstream level that's called "Elevator Music level". That doesn't necessarily mean their music is bad, it's just that their music is THAT overplayed.

@The Adversary is right. You can't make a song like Hymn For The Weekend or Fun if it's not IN THE SLIGHTEST for attention or money. They are clearly trying to stay relevant. We could've had a pop rockish masterpiece with songs like the title track and Birds, but Chris' desire to stay somewhat relevant in the music world led to this album. That doesn't necessarily mean he forced himself to do this. He probably does enjoy listening to these pop tunes.

I've heard that they've only recently changed from their mediocre punk rock phase to what they are now.

I think he's going to switch to much lower voice tones like Yes in future albums. I don't think he can keep up with these high range vocals. Perhaps he will get vocal chord surgery like Dan Reynolds.

Checking out The 1975's new album "I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it" (long title, I know). It's a very ambient album mixed with rock and 80's synth pop. I really wouldn't mind it if Coldplay went in this direction, just a bit more rocky than the aforementioned example.
