  1. hmm To the original poster: I read through a few pages of this thread, then I just skipped to the end. So if I make some points that have already been made - I apologize. I read your quote about Satriani fans being musicians and musicians knowing music. I absolutely agree. I would say a majority of Satriani fans are musicians/guitar players who know a lot about theory whereas a majority of Coldplay fans are not musicians (and if they are - most of them don't know much about theory). So after saying that - I am actually a Coldplay fan who studied music theory! Here's the deal: Yeah they totally sound alike. Here's the problem: Only 4 melodic notes directly match between the two songs. Only 3 rhythmic notes directly match between the two songs. Yeah, you could argue that Chris might have heard the Satriani tune and decided to change it up a tad to make it his own - but the melodies are used in such different ways for each song that I can't see it. Satriani's tune uses the melody for an explosion into the chorus... Coldplay uses the melody to gradually start the verse. If Chris had really wanted to rip off the melody, I'd assume he'd rip it for the feeling and mood that it gave him when he originally heard the Satriani tune. But in Viva la Vida, the melody is used in a completely different way, which suggests to me that the "plagiarism" is absolutely accidental. And here's the problem with attacking Coldplay on how they handled the situation: Do you know how many people plagiarize Coldplay daily? Right now I bet there is some asshole in his dorm room claiming the chorus of Yellow as his own. And the plagiarism doesn't just end at the amateur level - check out Sum 41's "Pieces" with Coldplay's "The Scientist" OR listen to Ashlee Simpson's "Eyes Wide Open" with Coldplay's "Square One." These two songs are extremely identical to Coldplay's songs - there's no question about it. Those two popular bands have completely ripped off Coldplay and you know what... Coldplay hasn't done anything about it. They understand that music sounds alike. Either that, or they just don't care if someone completely steals from them. So, yeah the melodies sound the same. There are even some of the same notes and rhythms, but the mood of each is completely different, which suggests that it's completely accidental. I don't know how the law suit is going to go in court - but I won't agree with your assessment of how Coldplay has handled the situation. They could have been absolute dicks to many other people about plagiarism so I'm sure when they heard about the lawsuit they were offended. It should be an interesting case. http://www.myspace.com/themodernantiques
  2. they aren't looping the string parts. the sounds the keyboards make are nothing like the actual string parts. the keyboards are so low in the mix that it's tough to pick out what noise they're making, but when you hear it, it's nothing like the strings. i agree with the blogger... i love the songs but i hope they figure something else out for the gigs.
  3. "I don't think Lost! had a backing track at all." Not that it's a big deal... but there's an organ playing the entire time... and no one is at the keys. Johnny could be playing it through his guitar, but he's also playing his riff every so often. Also, every time the chorus comes along we get an even bigger BURST of synth. The only time the song sounds like it's legitimately being played is during the bridge (Johnny's solo). But like I said, I love the new songs and Coldplay... I just think if people who are on the edge of liking them notice this stuff they might get turned off. They already get enough boy band comparisons. EDIT: I just re-watched it again and Johnny is at the keyboard at the beginning! So he's a master of the loop. I'm ok with looping. That still doesn't explain all the sounds in the song... but it makes me feel a bit better. I still think 42 is mostly prerecorded though.
  4. it's my favorite track off the new album. it proves how creative they can be since they took an acoustic tune and turned it into an anthem dancer.
  5. Anyone else convinced that Chris is doing nothing on the acoustic guitar during 42? I can clearly see Johnny playing the first half of the solo... then when the louder guitar kicks in I think that's supposed to be Chris but he doesn't really follow it. And right before the song goes back to "those who are dead" Chris stops playing the guitar to jump on the piano and all the guitar parts keep going (the acoustic is clearly audible even though he's not playing. I love the band and I love the new songs... but I wish they'd perform them with no backing tracks. EDIT: after watching the performance again I can see Johnny playing the heavier lead part in the bridge... but Chris is definitely not playing the original lead part that Johnny just got done playing. The guitar sound never changed.
  6. hey Hey guys... I just "Lost!-afied" one of my older songs. I'd like to hear some feedback if anyone wants to listen. It's called "I'm an Expert" and it's here: http://www.myspace.com/themodernantiques I just love how Coldplay took the acoustic Lost? and turned it into the anthem dance Lost! My song started off as an acoustic folk song and I tried to remix it in the same way as Lost! So feel free to check it out and let me know what you think! Tyler

  8. it's funny how far people read into the aspirations of a band. when coldplay started, they were probably just 4 guys who wanted to make music... they probably had no intentions beyond that. to read that deeply into the lyrics and aspirations (especially from their first two albums) is frankly, absurd. judge the new album under those circumstances, that's ok. once they said they were the best band making music they opened the door for that scrutinity, but any judgment before that statement is silly.
  9. finally! Hey our EP is finally on itunes! Here's a direct link to the album: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=282410100&s=143441&v0=WWW-NAUS-ITUWEEKLY-MUSIC This EP is just the first half of the full-length disc... the second half of the full album has much more coldplay influence and it should be out in a month!
  10. yeah i feel that way too... but that's why we have "lost?" acoustic.
  11. yeah i've been skipping over those two tracks for the past couple days. violet hill remains my favorite though. so it's just on a time-out for a little while. it'll be even better when it comes back.
  12. cemeteries of london and lost! are my favorite tracks on the album. even though lost! sounds a bit hip-hop-y... it's still one of more emotional tracks on the album.
  13. do all of you have synesthesia? or are you just guessing?
  14. 'reign of love' reminds me of 'til kingdom come' and 'life is for living' it sounds like a hymn. i think it would be more successful as its own track... or at the end of the album. i really think it's a highlight on the album.
  15. ok i'm here. for sure.
  16. i'm here for AROBTTH for now. but i might switch to viva in a couple weeks after it sinks in.
  17. the way i see it: parachutes: dreamy pop/rock a rush of blood: edgy pop/rock x and y: arena pop/rock viva la vida: experimental pop/rock i think viva's got a little bit of each previous album in it... but i do so love the edgy rock of AROBTTH. they're all fantastic and i think we should thank coldplay for making a truly NEW album each time.
  18. i know it's probably wrong... but i'm definitely going to split the double-song songs so the album has 12 tracks. i like reign of love and chinese a lot so i'm going to want to be able to listen to them without fast forwarding through a whole track. i'll keep the escapist as a hidden track because it works as a secret ender.
  19. damn. i've never been happier to be unemployed and waking up at 10:30am.
  20. ohhh it's coming slowly. got it.
  21. it's no joke. but i can only find cemeterys, lovers, and 42.
  22. + Lost? - Lovers in Japan 12 Viva la Vida 12 Violet Hill 8 Life in Technicolor 8 Lovers in Japan 10 Lost?
  23. maybe they're doing what death cab did with "plans"... make a video for each song on the album. how sweet would that be?
  24. ah i got X&Y at midnight the day it came out at walmart. i just had to ask someone to open the box with it in.
