1. I get the sense he wasn't that into AHFOD. I remember him mentioning Birds as a song he was excited about, though. But you can't tell me he enjoyed playing Hymn for the Weekend on tour . It didn't look like he did. He looked far more engaged during X&Y, VLV and MX era. It seems like he half-asses his backing vocals now, compared to earlier tours. Maybe this break and a new creative direction will reinvigorate him.
2. All I know is that Live 2012 premiered in theaters worldwide for like a limited time. For Ghost Stories Live, it was premiered on primetime television and the band had a night with family and friends for the film. So yeah, it probably won't be much of a promotion ("promotion phase" was probably a bit of an exaggeration on my part), but clearly there was a lot of work put into it so I could see it being in theaters and the band doing a premier night or something.
3. Being the bassist for Coldplay is a rough day job, Guy.
4. We could also take into account that the writing and production of GS and AHFOD took less time than the previous albums. I'm willing to bet Chris has a full hard drive of songs and ideas, and that the band probably already have enough material where they can put together an album relatively quickly if they wanted to. Unless this past year has been a total refresh and they are completely changing direction once they get back to work next year... It also seems they are more efficient making music ever since their new recording format of splitting time between LA and London. Another thing to note is the time of year they've gone back into the studio to record (I don't know if this has been brought up before)- AHFOD- Dec. 2014 GS- Feb. 2013 MX- Nov. 2008 VLV- Nov. 2006 X&Y- Jan 2004 AROBBTH- Sept. 2001 Parachutes- Nov. 1999 They start recording almost exclusively around the beginning of a new year (after summer touring season, it seems). So we will likely get the AHFOD album/dvd later this year (Nov/Dec). There will probably be a bit of a promotional phase for it, (even though that feels a bit odd, 3 years removed from the album's release and a year after touring ended) then they get back in the studio sometime early 2019? @jc90 's prediction seems about right. Mid-2020 makes sense, a little earlier if we are lucky. I feel like as next year rolls along, the band will want to do shows sooner rather than later, too.
5. Yeah I think you're right now listening back again:D. It's surprising because London Palladium is a pretty small gig, and he seemed to do it live for most small gigs during AHFOD. But every stadium and arena was definitely lip-synced. I guess I am still in denial that Coldplay would ever do such a thing. Especially to my favorite ever song :pensive:
6. Thank you very much!
7. They went right from GPASUYF, to The Scientist, to Clocks. If only Daylight was next :pensive: Another bonus, Chris didn't even lip sync Clocks that time! EDIT: As @I ran away pointed out, he totally did lip-sync Clocks.
8. Wow, I hadn't listened to this gig before now. All I remember about this gig is the announcement of Kaleidoscope. Really incredible, the setlist so far is on point. GPASUYF was awesome.
9. Mobile Link: https://twitter.com/absoluteradio/status/1042794404275277824?s=19 Was anyone planning on recording this/is anyone able to record it? I'm interested what the extended highlights are...:eyes:
10. I think it's because the live versions of HFTW and ASFOS have a heavy usage of the prerecorded studio album tracks? In other words, YouTube can recognize that the video is using copyrighted music, whereas most of the other songs they played live are almost completely live instrumental with some backing stuff. And Clocks was pre-recorded on this tour I believe, at least Chris' vocals were. Although I'm still not sure, does any one know if Will, Guy and Jonny were playing live on Clocks for this past tour? That's interesting that they made you take down Clocks, as there isn't a released version of the "AHFOD pre-recorded version of Clocks" that they appeared to use for the entirety of the tour. Also, that's awesome that you were able to get it back up!
11. I believe that if you have audio/video of HFTW, and you don't have the rights to it, it is a violation of WMG copyrighting. Hence the professional videos with copyrighted songs edited out. Also the cracking down could certainly be ramped up if they anticipate a release that will be/was heavily reproduced on YouTube soon (like Live 2017). I could be wrong on both accounts though.
12. My favorite part of XMTS is the last "Wherever you are I find that treasure" Because that marks the end of the song. Going back to the theme of "WTF is Chris saying for half the song" (Hurts Like Heaven)... Rainy Day
13. I love Kanye, but that new song "I Love It" with something called "Lil Pump" is so bad its hard to fathom.
14. Shiver vs. LiTII
15. Always just been Coldplay knockoffs.
16. They're "only going to be full of surprises" from here on out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
17. If I lived anywhere remotely near Portugal, I would totally go.
18. That's a good point about songs being interpreted differently with different contexts. I get that it's about Gwyneth and the whole album is truly about trying to take away positives from a relationship that's over (after the immediate denial and pain of GS). But Chris has written much more powerful music in the past that really conveys the pain/hope/fear he felt. Fun is just a corny title to being with, imo, regardless of the content of the song. The song is a really good idea, but the execution was meh. The melody is just too...poppy... for the subject matter. That could mostly have to do with Stargate's production (and Coldplay's willingness to let them turn the songs into what they became) But Idk, feel free to disagree. The only redeeming qualities of the song is the idea behind it, how great Tove Lo's voice complements Chris', and the last line "maybe we could again"- really makes you wonder what Chris is feeling there.
19. But that's what makes Coldplay great. Minimalist and simple. Whether it's a sound from Jonny's guitar, a bass line from Guy or a simple repetitive beat from Will, it comes together to make powerfully emotional music. It's not a terrible thing to say Guy physically doesn't do much in their songs, because he doesn't, but all he needs is a simple bass line to take the song to another level. Some of my favorite Guy songs- Birds, Sparks, Everything's Not Lost, AHFOD, White Shadows, Daylight, GPASUYF. And of course, Guy essentially created Magic, which is a damn good song. And Clocks is just a freaking masterpiece, everyone's part is spot on. I just wish Jonny would crank up the distortion a bit when playing Clocks live. And Yellow, like he used to. But that's a different discussion for another day  Guy doesn't make complex and intricate bass lines on those songs, but he doesn't need to in order to make a great bass line. Like Will said, he's just there to support the songs that Chris writes with a drum line, not go off on some otherworldly-Buddy Rich drum solo.
20. I don't think anyone on here has said Coldplay don't have a right to make whatever music they want, that's just ridiculous. It's completely fair to criticize music, even if you aren't a musical artist, as you suggest. It's like saying you can't have a political opinion if you are not a politician. No one is judging or shaming them as people, a lot of us are just disappointed in the song and collaboration choice. We are all still Coldplay fans at the end of the day, and they will always be my favorite band. But that doesn't mean I have to like or agree with everything they do.
21. They are free to make whatever they want, just as much as we are free to not like SJLT and wish they didn't make music with The Chainsmokers, just as much as you are free to like SJLT and the direction of the band.
22. Hey at least Tove Lo can sing. The Chainsmokers legitimately either get someone else to sing a different song over the same chords, or use autotune. Neither of them are able to sing. Not a fan of huge fan of either of those collabs though. Fun is okay, but it's just super corny.
23. Yes. But nominations don't have anything to do with being asked to perform. Libor brought up the idea of them promoting their next album at the Grammy's. They haven't won a Grammy in about 10 years and haven't been asked to perform during their last 2 album cycles, after having performed the previous 4 (if I remember correctly). I'm just saying their critical acclaim from The Recording Academy has been lacking since after Mylo. BTW Mylo totally should have won one of those nominations.
24. I disagree. If you like Coldplay, then chances are you ARE adaptable, because there existed a pretty substantial evolution from album to album... especially if you compare Parachutes up to X&Y, up to VLV, MX, GS, etc. All very different albums yet with the same signature Coldplay sound. I think people who don't like SJLT think it's not very inventive or true to Coldplay form. This is just my opinion, but I don't think the Chainsmokers are very talented, relative to the people Coldplay have associated with in the past. (Beyonce, Noel Gallagher, Kanye, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Johnny Cash). It feels like the aim of SJLT was to create something popular-sounding and not terribly inventive. Sure, you could say VLV and Paradise are very pop sounding/intended for a mainstream audience, but they were fairly inventive and unique at the time. It was strategic for KEP popularity, if that was their intention, but why do Coldplay need to validate their popularity? I guess I'm just salty that Chris would rather make pop music with The Chainsmokers than challenge themselves and make something more unique.
25. If they ever make music that is good enough again for the Grammy's o_O
