Coldplay ‘Viva’ Toronto Brit rockers Coldplay dropped by MuchMusic’s MuchOnDemand on Thursday before they stepped on stage at the Air Canada Centre for the second night of their sold out shows in Toronto. The band is currently touring in support of their fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, which was released earlier this year. Viva la Vida was produced by Brian Eno and features a slightly different sound for the band, including Martin singing a tad bit deeper than usual. After tonight’s show, Coldplay heads to the United States for three shows before embarking on a number of International dates. Rotten, real name John Lydon, is due to headline the Live At Loch Lomond festival where the Babyshambles singer is also performing this weekend. He explained: "Doherty's got trapped in a publicity campaign that has run out of order. "Another fool who is given a golden opportunity to do something wonderful in his life and he'd rather be selfish and cowardly. Drugs are the modus operandi of the coward. "Pete is a fine lad that needs to sort himself out. This is Mister Rotten telling you I waltz on stage sober because no drug in the world is as good as being absolutely 100 percent honest with your audience. Nothing compares to that emotion. People like him and Amy Winehouse are getting it wrong as usual." Rotten, who burst onto the music scene in 1976 with the Sex Pistols, says he still misses former bandmate Sid Vicious, almost 30 years after the rocker was found dead of a heroin overdose. Sending a chilling warning to Doherty, he added: "I've known very many people who have died from drugs over the years. It has been an uphill battle all the way to make them understand it is not cool or an image you need. Acting that way is actually hiding from yourself. "Pete and people like that are caught up in the corporate pressure and can't handle the stress. You can't go to college and study that kind of tension. It's very difficult for people. I watched Sid implode from the inside out because of record company pressure. He couldn't cope with it. It was savagely cruel to throw him in at the deep end that way. I thought he'd have been able to handle it but he couldn't. To this day I feel very sad and despondent about that. I still miss him very much." The punk singer will be performing hits such as Anarchy In The UK, God Save The Queen and Bodies, when the Pistols close the main stage on Sunday. The stellar line-up in the beautiful surroundings of Balloch Castle Country Park, overlooking Loch Lomond, will feature acts including Groove Armada, Alabama 3, Stereo MCs, Audio Bullys, Roisin Murphy, Ocean Colour Scene and Idlewild. Manchester's finest, The Happy Mondays, and dance favourites Sasha and Digweed, Fedde Le Grand, Roger Sanchez and Carl Cox also feature. But Rotten is delighted Amy Winehouse isn't among the top acts. "Poor old Amy. Aimless Winehouse would be a better term," he said. "I love all kinds of music but the one thing I have never done is imitate black music in her idiotic way. "There's not a single word that means anything. It's not like these songs are deeply moving or inspirational or cultural in any way you could find useful. "I don't like pale imitations and shades of things and I am always wary when people go jazzy because jazz is the best cover up for a lack of talent the world has ever known. It don't wash real with me. "And the cover up for her which is probably the guilt trip is that she requires vast amounts of drugs to hide the fact that she is fake." Controversy continues to surround the singer more than 30 years after the Sex Pistols first burst onto the music scene. Last week, he took flak when a member of his entourage was accused of allegedly making a racist remark about Bloc Party's Nigerian singer Kele Okereke. Rotten also defended himself over claims he made fledgling singer Duffy cry at the recent Mojo awards ceremony, held in London. Relaxing in Knightsbridge, he insisted: "Listen, barmaids across the universe cry over me nightly. What makes this one special? It's a poor young girl who made the mistake of trying to jump on my back. "You know the world I live in. Most people who grab me from behind are full of ill content. This is just a young girl but she has to understand that that is not how you behave with strangers. I don't behave like that." THE Pistols' Loch Lomond date will be a far cry from the band's attempted Scottish dates on the Anarchy tour of December 1976. The day after the band's infamous appearance on Bill Grundy's Thames TV show, Glasgow's Lord Provost, Peter McCann, described them as "filth" in The Record. Planned Glasgow Apollo and Dundee Caird Hall gigs were subsequently cancelled. "The Scots have never treated me bad and I have never treated them bad either," Rotten said. "Politicians are a different kettle of piranha. The Lord Provost up there gave out that insane statement 30 years ago that there were enough hooligans in Scotland without importing them." The London-born son of Irish immigrants has news for fans of the legendary punk rock group - The Sex Pistols are a folk group, as was his band Public Image Ltd (PIL). "Anarchy In The UK is a damn fine folk tune," Rotten insisted. "The Sex Pistols, Public Image and everything I have ever been involved with to me has always been folk music. If I can't sing my songs in a local social club or church gathering then they're pointless. I celebrate my culture and all of these songs are as valid today as they were 30 years ago, as indeed a true traditional folk song is. The words mean something. Maybe I'm lucky I just happened to speak the truth. "All true folk music is from the heart and truthful. There is a difference between us and what you would jokingly call punk rock. Our audiences know it and the world is beginning to pay attention but it might be too late because the haemorrhoids are now causing a terrible problem." The irony of that statement, of course, is that, at 52, he is now almost 20 years older than Jagger was back in the Seventies when Rotten derided him for being too ancient to rock. "Whatever age I am, the point is I give 100 per cent and that will never change," Rotten says in his defence. "That requires a helluva lot of energy." Recalling the doors that opened for new bands in the wake of punk, Rotten added: "Bands like the Rolling Stones procured for themselves a system of hierarchy in the industry and they cancelled any opportunity for young bands to break in. "They closed the doors on us and I have never viewed them very well because of that. Although Ron Wood is a great chap, fun to hang out with, but what does that mean? "The wonderful world of entertainment was totally dominated by the rigidity of what was called the hippie movement. They became the new Nazis and they poisoned the music industry. They absolutely did." Meanwhile, he insists Live At: Loch Lomond is a far better music festival than Glastonbury despite the fact that it is still finding its feet. "Glastonbury was a tragedy," he said. "It originated as a hippy fest when hippiedom worked. Then rave was introduced to Glastonbury which was wonderful. Now I look at it and it is like Butlins for the middle-class. "It is so orchestrated. It was awful to see it. I felt the same way playing at the Isle Of Wight. It is orchestrated deck chair seating and gay rainbow flag waving. It's very, very absurd. "The tragedy of the modern youth movement is it gives us no hope. It's almost politically correct that Coldplay be as popular as they are. They are passion killers in the extreme. "You will all wake one morning and realise that is a contemptible attitude to be offering anyone at all. "There is not one single word that you can truly say, 'I relate to that'. If you're looking for teenage books similar to Harry Potter/Twilight, thenyou could try some of these (note: for some reason, most of the ones which spring to mind are series!) Garth Nix's Abhorsen trilogy. Starts with Sabriel, then Lirael, then Abhorsen. Its set in a place called the Old Kingdom, which is filled with magic. Its currently being used by evil beings and the trilogy shows them trying to reclaim the kingdom for good magic. I love this trilogy. Cornelia Funke's trilogy. Only Inkheart & Inkspell have been published yet. Its about a girl and her Dad who can read things out of books when they read out loud. The second one finds them having read themselves inside a book to follow on the events of the first book. Lian Hearn's Tales of the Otori. (Across the Nightingale Floor; Grass For His Pillow; Brilliance of the Moon; Harsh Cry Of THe Heron; Heaven's Net Is Wide) They're set in an ancient China, and follow Takeo who belongs to a community called the Hidden. Lots of historical references, battles, and a bit of a romance going on. Stravaganza series by Mary Hoffman. Starts with City of Masks (City of Stars; City of Flowers; City of Secrets) and is a time-travelling series. Children from modern UK find that when they go to sleep they are in an alternative medieval Italy, where there are subtle differences to our Italy. Each book follows a different child, although they do mingle between each others books. Malorie Blackman. Noughts & Crosses; Knife Edge; Checkmate. The fourth one is due ot be publised in the autumn. The series is set where people are divided between Noughts & Crosses, a rical divide similar to that between blacks & whites. Follows some central characters but highlights racial tensions & divides, and shows how people can become involved in terrorism.
