well, I started with sensible questions and they haven't been answered, so I've moved onto daft. and if that fails, i have one last magic question to ask :D

A female commuter was thrown on to a live railway line after telling two youths to stop smoking on a station platform this morning. The woman, whose identity is not known, suffered burns and a suspected broken collar bone and was taken to hospital after the incident, at Farningham Road station in Kent during the rush hour shortly after 7am. A construction worker, who did not witness the attack, said that he was told the victim was pregnant. South Eastern train services between Kent and London were disrupted because the power had to be turned off. The train company said that the woman had asked the youths to stop smoking on the station platform, where it is banned. A scuffle started on the tiny platform, which is only manned by one member of staff, and she was thrown on to the track before fellow passengers dragged her off. British Transport Police are studying CCTV footage of the incident and were said to be following up a number of leads. A spokesman said that the woman was lucky to be alive because the “live” rail was carrying 750 volts of electricity. “We are appalled by this incident and hope the perpetrators are quickly identified," a South Eastern trains spokesman said. Ian Buttery, a construction worker who was repairing fences bordering the station, said he arrived just after the incident happened. “I got here at around 8am and there were three police cars," he said. “I heard from other people that a pregnant woman had been pushed on to the track after she asked the men to stop smoking.” Smoking was banned on England’s 1,900 railway stations last July. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article4469907.ece

Gwyneth Paltrow films ad for Barack Obama Gwyneth Paltrow has urged fellow Americans living abroad to vote for Barack Obama in a new advertisement. The American actress, who lives in London with her husband, Chris Martin, the singer in the rock group Coldplay, leads a video encouraging ex-pats to register to vote from overseas in the presidential election in November. Speaking alongside several other Americans living abroad, Miss Paltrow says: "Start now - right now. I'll be voting from London, but you can vote from anywhere. If you live abroad, you've got to do it. Every single vote will count." She asks American ex-pats: "Where on earth will you vote?" The video concludes: "Vote Democrat. Vote Obama. Vote From Abroad." The video, which will be distributed on the internet, was produced by Democrats Abroad, a division of the party devoted to persuading the millions of Americans living outside the country and eligible to vote to keep participating in domestic politics. The organisation estimates that while more than six million registered Democrats live abroad, only one million ballots were requested by all US citizens overseas for the 2006 mid-term Congressional elections. Mr Obama's lead in opinion polls has been cut by aggressive television advertising by Republican candidate John McCain portraying him as elitist, presumptuous and celebrity-obsessed. The advertisements, which have been credited to Mr McCain's new senior adviser Steve Schmidt, have likened Mr Obama to celebrities such as Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. A Gallup poll on Friday showed the two candidates are now tied, where a week before Mr Obama had held a nine-point lead. Expressing her hope that the new video will give Mr Obama a boost, Christine Schon Marques, the International Chair of Democrats Abroad, said: "This is a critical election, and we urge all Americans living abroad to request ballots now. Police on the Greek island of Santorini have shot and injured a knifeman who decapitated his girlfriend and walked around the streets with her head. Terrified residents of the popular tourist island barricaded themselves into their homes and called the police. The suspect, 35, was shot during a dramatic car chase in which he crashed into a motorbike and badly injured the rider and pillion passenger. The crime is one of the most gruesome in Greece in recent memory. Ricochet The man reportedly beheaded his girlfriend, a teacher in her mid-to-late 20s, in the village of Vourvoulos, close to the island's capital, Thira, and then paraded with the head. Speaking on Greek television, the local sub-prefect said the man attacked officers who tried to arrest him and slashed one policeman in the face. The man threw the head into a patrol car and then stole a police jeep and tried to get away. But after 400m the suspect slammed into a motorbike carrying two female doctors. They were thrown into the air and badly hurt. The police then opened fire and hit the alleged knifeman five times. According to one eyewitness, one police bullet ricocheted off the road and hit a woman in the leg and jaw. The suspect is said to have a history of jealousy and domestic violence. Russian writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who exposed Stalin's prison system in his novels and spent 20 years in exile, has died at 89, Russian media say. The author of the Gulag Archipelago and One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich, who returned to Russia in 1994, died of either a stroke or heart failure. The Nobel laureate had suffered from high blood pressure in recent years. After returning to Russia, Solzhenitsyn wrote several polemics on Russian history and identity. His son Stepan was quoted by one Russian news agency as saying his father died of heart failure, while another agency quoted literary sources as saying he had suffered a stroke. He died in his home in the Moscow area, where he had lived with his wife Natalya, at 2345 local time (1945 GMT), Stepan told Itar-Tass. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sent his condolences to the writer's family, a Kremlin spokesperson said. Solzhenitsyn served as a Soviet artillery officer in World War II and was decorated for his courage but in 1945 was denounced for criticising Stalin in a letter.
