Help Oxfam America & See Coldplay! (Volunteer Discussion Thread)
Maple Leafs all round. The singing was ringing in my ears as I packed up and took a shower last night. Chris Martin had told the crowd the rules of the encore: that they had to make lots of noise, if they wanted the band to come out again. That was before they played the last song of the set.. then, even with a mic, you couldn’t hear him speak to introduce it. Montreal was an amazing show. The crowd in full voice from start to end. Coldplay couldn’t help but play a second encore. There’s a lesson in making some noise for one more song. 1887 strong of that same crowd signed Oxfam Quebec’s FOR ALL petition. Exigez l’accès de tous aux services publics en signant la déclaration Pour tous! Countless more spoke to one of our fantastic volunteers. There may be only one show in Quebec, but I won’t forget it. 7 hours after getting on the bus, we’re off again, load-in has begun, the stage rolled in, the floor marked, riggers walk the gangways way up high, and road cases just keep rolling in off the trucks. There are cables and chains everywhere. It’s hard hat city, and everyone seems to know their place. The ice for the Maple Leafs is long gone. A new stage is being built before my eyes. Tonight, Toronto’s Air Canada Center plays host to Coldplay. For now though, it’s a building site. http://www.oxfamblogs.org/coldplay/?p=33

Urban Planner: July 30, 2008 MUSIC: Coldplay's in town. If you're looking for tickets, look no further than the friendly scalpers who will undoubtedly swarm the ACC around 6 p.m. tonight. Make sure you've made a hefty cash withdrawal beforehand, though—even on Craigslist, it's hard to find a nosebleed ticket selling for less than $100. I guess some people still really like "Clocks." Air Canada Centre (40 Bay Street), 7:30 p.m., $49.50–$97.50. http://torontoist.com/2008/07/urban_planner_july_30_2008.php

Toronto Radar: Coldplay Ready to Soft-Rock the Air Canada Centre By Richard Trapunski Toronto is a busy place. With restaurants and bars opening and closing everyday, concerts being performed nonstop, and news developing faster than it can be reported, it's hard to stay afloat. You need a guide. Martiniboys is here to help. Keeping our ears to the ground and our eyes to the blogs, we've collected all the hot buzz that you need to stay informed about your fair city. Whether it be a new store opening or a shocking political scandal, you'll find it here. There's no need to thank us, we're just doing our jobs. Okay, you can thank us. This is a begrudging FYI. While I'll conceal my own personal feelings towards the band (I think you can guess), I have to grit my teeth and admit that Coldplay are still one of the biggest bands in the world right now. Enough so, that when they come to town, it's always newsworthy. So I couldn't in good conscience ignore it. For those who don't know, Coldplay play a non-offensive brand of arena-ready (good for the Air Canada Centre crowd) bombastic rock anthems that have been compared to Jeff Buckley and Echo and the Bunnymen, but in reality are more comparable to Rod Stewart and Peter Gabriel. Oh, and U2. It's impossible to forget U2, what with Chris Martin's Bono Complex. Yes, that's a thing. So get out your lighters (or these days cell phones) and get ready to soft rock! http://www.martiniboys.com/Toronto/articles/Toronto-Radar:-Coldplay-Ready-to-Soft_d_Rock-the-Air-Canada-Centre-10747.html

What is the secret to playing a great stadium gig?
Act like you belong there, for a start. If you mumble between songs like you're embarrassed to be on stage, I will throw my £6 burger at you. A couple of years ago, Chris Martin said something that actually made sense. Coldplay had just finished a series of British stadium shows and Martin admitted he didn't believe his group performed well in such settings, vowing to never to play them again. From that point on, the roof of an indoor arena would be Coldplay's limit. It might be the fact that I'm getting older, but I've reached the stage where I don't automatically despise bands popular enough to ply their trade in a football ground. But what I do expect from a gig at Wembley, or from the headliners at the Leeds or Reading festivals, is that they're able to cope with the surroundings. A lot of bands just don't have a clue, which is no doubt why many are predicting the death of arena rock. Some acts, however, are masters at making the enormous seem intimate. It's not enough to play these places simply because lots of people will come and watch you have a go. This weekend, I saw Metallica perform in front of 42,000 people at Istanbul's Ali Sami Yen Stadium. I watched from the photo pit while behind me a significant proportion of the city's youth went completely insane. The distance between band and audience was vast, its space taken up with a cyclone of photographers, security men, first aid crews and injured fans. The band, though, never once looked to the war zone at their feet. Instead, their attentions were focused on making thousands of faces in the distance feel part of the show. From such close proximity the showmanship looked a bit excessive, but then again I wasn't where the audience was. Only 150 metres back their fans were going mad over a band who were busy making themselves even bigger than the music they play. Be bold, that seems to be the key. There's no use being shy about this; after all, asking people to come to these places to watch you play is a big ask in itself. There are, of course, exceptions to this rule. Two weeks ago I saw Leonard Cohen charm 17,000 people at London's 02 Arena using only a smile and a voice that sounded like God swearing an oath. This, though, won't wash with the Pigeon Detectives, or any other group who seem lost both on the big stage and on anyone standing more than a few feet from it. Anyone attending an outdoor show knows that they are cattle with a pound sign branded on them. This is tolerable if those on the big screens make it worth our while. Here we are now, entertain us. If you mumble between songs like you're embarrassed to be there I will throw my £6 burger at you. The bands that triumph on the biggest stages are those who believe they belong there. If you have any doubts then please don't waste my time. Ian Winwood http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/music/2008/07/what_is_the_secret_to_playing.html

Help Oxfam America & See Coldplay! (Volunteer Discussion Thread)
Montreal already? Ole, Ole Ole Ole .. Cold-play Coldplay! (repeat many times). There’s nothing like a festival crowd. Squished in tight for the best spot. For some that’s right by the speaker, on your friends shoulders, by the fence, or it might be at the back.. where there’s room to dance. For everyone, it’s on the grass/mud/dust/hay, or whatever else is underfoot. It was dust at the first ever Pemberton Festival. For most, the best spot was as close to the stage as possible, when the night reached Coldplay time. Some of those at the back got a surprise front spot when the band played two songs by in the middle of the crowd. Festival crowds are so close, you can feel the heat, just standing. And when the roar goes up for the return of Coldplay to Canada, 5 weeks at number 1 here, you can almost hear it.. the heat i mean. I was right in there. Where Oxfam frisbees flew all around. Beach balls bounced off heads and the buzz of human excitement filled the air. Girls and boys alike screamed for their favourite songs, and for band members hands in marriage..(one guy behind me said.. “That Chris Martin guy.. he’s a .. guy.. but i’d like to marry him”). There was a general consensus. It was worth the traffic which awaited us all, to see Coldplay close the festival Sunday night. Coldplay follwed ‘Mr’ Jay-Z (as they called him). He warmed up the crowd nicely for his friends from London. Coldplay claimed that they should have done that for their friend from Brooklyn, New York. It was another whistlestop tour of another incredible place. Pemberton festival more visually stunning than most. The stage back-drop was snow-tipped peaks. Oxfam’s tent was in a wooded path, where Oxfam Canada had linked up with Make Poverty History. People could also sign action cards, buy white wristbands or have their picture taken for the 0.7 campaign asking the Canadian government to meet their promises for overcoming poverty. British Columbia is a beautiful place. Vancouver will be a great setting for the 2010 Olympics. Coldplay are a long way from there now, just two days later. They are two doors down from me, warming up for their show at Centre Bell, Montreal. Santogold is busy on-stage warming up the crowd. Oxfam Quebec volunteers are busy talking to the crowd about the Health and Education FOR ALL campaign. There is the chance to take an action right there to sign a petition asking for more and better health and education workers worldwide. I had better go and see how they are getting on, before they take their seats. It’s not long until Coldplay time. http://www.oxfamblogs.org/coldplay/?p=32
