because there are millions of different strains of flu. they have some way of working out which one is likely to hit and vaccinate everyone for that. so when a different strain arrives you're better protected than you would have been without. and if the right strain does arrive, by the time its benn through a few million people it will have mutated so no longer resembles the vaccine. i was sick yesterday but it wasn't flu. had some stomach bug thing, which was horrid.
