  1. I've posted the official rules. I hope they're clear. If anyone spots any inconsistencies or errors, would you please let me know. On EPs: We did allow EPs one year, but in the end the consensus was that it was better to leave them alone. It's easiest to stick with that, especially since this is meant to celebrate full-length albums. In my mind, an EP is meant to fall between a single and an album in both length and number of songs. So about 20 or 30 minutes long, and 4 to 7 songs (or 3 songs with no standout track). Sometimes an ambient album will be a single piece stretched over an hour or two. Sometimes a band will release a full-length album and call it an EP so they don't have to deal with the pressure of an official album. I think those special cases are technically albums. I'd say if an EP is more than 50 minutes long, or if it has at least 8 tracks and is at least 40 minutes long, that's not an EP in my mind. So as far as special cases like Sufjan Stevens goes, I'll let you decide among yourselves on a case-by-case basis.
  2. Karkwa - Les Chemins de Verre Arcade Fire - The Suburbs Vampire Weekend - Contra Lcd Soundsystem - This Is Happening Gorillaz - Plastic Beach The Black Keys - Brothers Klaxons - Surfing the Void Apparatjik - We Are Here MIA - /\/\/\Y/\ Loreena McKennit - The Wind that Shakes the Barley Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record Stars - Five Ghosts Tokyo Police Club - Champ Beach House - Teen Dream Interpol - s/t Extra special past the cutoff shoutout to the Tron Legacy Soundtrack by Daft Punk Hmm... interesting year for me. On one hand I got the chance to buy and love almost every album on that list. What it meant though, was that I was listening to 5 or 10 favourite new albums over and over again, rather than listening to new things, so the time never materialized to make the list longer. I haven't even listened to Stars' album more than once, and I own it.
  3. ^^You know you're going to have to figure out how to pick 25 of those... :uhoh: For the rest of us who aren't rich and don't want to download, I would highly recommend Grooveshark, an ad-supported streaming site. http://listen.grooveshark.com/ Also, albums are often posted on websites and myspace pages in their entirety.
  4. Cut Copy - Where I`m Going http://www.cutcopy.net/ (They`re giving it away for free on their website!) I`ve been obsessed with it ever since it was used in the Blackberry Playbook demo the other day Karkwa - 28 Jours (My favorite on the album. Just don`t ask me what the lyrics mean.) [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpnH2UPewNY]YouTube - L'aurore - Karkwa (28 jours) With lyrics[/ame] Sh*tdisco - Reactor Party    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIEFDhAc_9Q]YouTube - Shitdisco - Reactor Party[/ame]
  5. Ooh, this is the countdown's 5th year, isn't it. :stunned: :hat: Well, usually when people are that eager to post something that comprehensive...
  6. :laugh3: Hey Briggins, you forgot to yell "first"! :P Also, you had that waiting, didn't you. Actually, it's two days early, but I couldn't wait any longer. Thus no instructions yet. UNLESS ARCADE FIRE DOES :p

  8. Drumroll please, :drummer: It's time for the annual Albums of the Year Poll 5th Anniversary Edition :toff:  The idea: Make a ranked list of your 5 to 25 top original studio albums released this year. There will be a countdown of Coldplaying's favorite new albums after the deadline. The deadline: Thursday, December 30th at 8:00pm EST The rules: ~ Original studio albums only, please. No EPs, live albums, reissues, or compilation albums. Soundtracks must be primarily original material. For example the Scott Pilgrim vs. The World soundtrack is not eligible, but the Scott Pilgrim original score is. ~ A list must have at least 5 albums to count. You may list up to 25 albums. Lists must be ranked by the deadline. ~ Albums must have been originally released between December 1st 2009 and December 1st 2010. The original release date is the first official release date in the US or UK, whichever is first. International-only releases go by the first official release date worldwide. ~ You may edit your list at any time up to the deadline. Post your tentative lists here and I will post a link to it in the second post. The list I link to will be the list I count, so make sure you edit your original list or let me know if you post a new one. ~ Digital-only releases are welcome. If an album has a split 2009-digital and 2010-physical release date, the physical release is eligible this year ONLY IF the digital release did not receive any votes in the 2009 poll. Unofficial leaks do not count. ~ Please number your albums and write the artist name before the album name. For example, #1. Radiohead - In Rainbows (This will save eons of time and will help you find out the results much sooner. Thanks.) ~ You cannot vote for In Rainbows. Resources and Links: Previous Albums of the Year Polls Wikipedia's Albums released in 2010 ALWAYS double-check release dates. Countdown Thread 2010 It's been a very good year, methinks. :D
  9. Identical issue with street hockey here. Everyone does it and then the cops come down on one group of kids which kicks off a firestorm in the papers. "You're destroying our national heritage!" "They're a public nuisance and a safety hazard!" Ad infinitum ad nauseum. Frankly it makes more sense for them to play in the street than us from what I've seen of the little yards you have. At least over here it's common to have a big enough lawn for a pick up game of whatever.
  10. Wow, that is nice. I think it sounds better in French, but it's neat to hear how their style of lyrics sound with the music to someone who can understand it. Many of the songs Google translate surprisingly well. I'm not sure what that means about them, but it is a little eerie.
  11. Karkwa!!!! ...and now sleep.
  12. Hmm. :nice: Only Caribou left to perform now, and I already know he's awesome (as is his windbreaker...) I'm glad I'm not picking this one. Each one of them would be a worthy winner based on performances. No fluff this year. But I'm still rooting for Karkwa.
  13. Montreal :p It's one of the greatest cities period. But if a passport is a problem, Boston. It's much better for exploring over a weekend than NYC. Have you looked into maybe trying youth hostels? If you're ok with the idea it would save a lot on hotel costs.
  14. Radio Radio were awesome. And now I'm really really wishing I knew more French.
  15. Polaris awards ceremony is streaming on the Much site in 15 minutes: http://www.muchmusic.com/tv/polaris/index-livestream.aspx I'm too late for the poll, but I'm 100% rooting for Karkwa. I just bought the album, actually. It is so, SO beautiful. :nice: There isn't a smiley big enough for it. I meant to listen to all the nominees, but I never got around to it, then I started with Karkwa, and well... I'm still listening to them. :embarrassed:
  16. Thank-you! These have been a big help. :D Uh, are my files different sizes or are your files different sizes? If it's yours, it won't matter because each letter is adjusted individually for the font. If it's my files that's a problem because the different sizes will be different relative thicknesses. :uhoh: Uh, if you are looking into them and wouldn't mind, the dollar sign and the star are a bit off too- one of the star's legs is closed in.
  17. Curly Brackets! And that's all, folks. They're all cut out and fixed up now. I'll take a couple of special requests for characters, but otherwise that's all of the main ones. So it's all biggifying and then putting them together now.
  18. It's needed if you wouldn't mind, please. :)
  19. At long last, the symbols. ...And I still forgot curly brackets. Oh, well, here's the rest of them. Curly brackets to follow.
  20. Opinion is a matter of perspective, so I do make a point to be honest and say what I think, but I also try to see things from as many different points of view as possible before forming an opinion. And there's a difference between being honest and unkind. For instance if they looked really bad in a dress, I would try to analyze why and say maybe the top half looks good, but the skirt isn't fitting quite right. A dress that flared out at the hips a bit more would look a lot more flattering on you. Or maybe something like that dress is great, I love the neckline, and it would fit you perfect if you went up one size. It usually goes over better than "it makes you look fat".
  21. Yikes. Not surprised. Like I said, sociopath. Dangerous type to be around at all. If he is like you say, no amount of comeuppance or vengeance will ever make him 'get it' because it's all stuff he's incapable of grasping.
  22. Ok, I had wanted to take the letter 'p' from one of the times he wrote out 'prospekt', but actually, it isn't very representative of how he generally writes lowercase 'p's, and the way it turned out is really bugging me. So here's a new one.
  23. Klaxons! Weeks since I got Surfing the Void and I'm still listening to it a lot.
  24. Also, what she said. http://jolieodell.wordpress.com/2010/09/07/women-in-tech/ Because frankly, when this recession has finally destroyed most of the middle class, "nerdy" tech stuff is where the good, high-paying jobs will be left in America. And girls won't be able to get them because they were too scared of math as kids for no good reason other than being called nerd. Nerd isn't helping. Also, I'm the only girl in my class now, I'm the only girl at my job, and I'm starting to get lonely. :(
