Lovers in Japan is Rebellion (lies)
I have been thinking the exact same thing. I can't believe someone else heard it the same way. I love Arcade Fire, and I love this song. But wouldn't call it a rip off as much as the Chinese Chant song is a straight rip off of My Bloody Valentine. I love that too.

The Estranged
Hey, to all. It's been awhile since I've been on here. Just got the new album and have been loving it. Anyway, I just wanted to talk to you Coldplay fans (incredibly friendly and good-hearted people that you are) about a serious situation in my life. I'm 25 and thinking about cutting off all contact from my family. My family is fairly dysfunctional (at least I think: maybe most modern families are dysfunctional; but I'm damn sure mine is). I've had serious problems with my parents for some time. And I'm not a very forgiving person. I hate that about myself. But I do forgive in life. The problem with my parents is that they feel there is nothing they should be forgiven for regarding their relationship with me. So why should I forgive people who feel there is nothing they should be forgiven for? I can forgive them to myself. But there is also something called "forgive and forget" isn't it? In my case, it would be "forgive and move on." Rape victims forgive the ones who raped them, but they don't exactly invite them for tea every Sunday, do they? Maybe that's an unfair analogy, but I think my point is clear. I haven't loved my parents for some time; there are no feelings there. I'm the oldest of 3 boys, and I don't talk to them either. I feel very bad about this, since my brothers are just my peers, but I feel as if so much time has passed that none of us cares about building a relationship now. This situation is fairly heavy and concerns me. I just wanted to get your input. I'm feeling like I'm entering into a new realm of the human condition, a realm in which I can go to the grocery store and tell the estranged ones from everybody else; and we won't exactly look like the happiest people there. I'm feeling very depressed about my situation, but I feel as if it's the best thing to do. What do you think? I'd appreciate your response.

Understood. I didn't read the entire thread before posting. :)

Racism alive and well in wake on Katrina disaster
Looting (definition #1) - being born poor and black in America; enduring a devastating natural disaster (a natural disaster which wouldn't have been so devastating if only your government cared to fix the levees in your poor, black town); waiting for days without assistance from your government (which is busy on Broadway showing the rest of the world how much it cares by aiding others across the Atlantic in their natural disaster); and then stealing some items from your local mall. Looting (definition #2) - escaping religious persecution from your country; fleeing across the Atlantic to a free land; stealing that land away from the natives and killing most of them off with your guns and diseases; years later, stealing millions of people from their countries across the Atlantic to work as slaves for you; employing those slave's descendants at your local malls to serve you food, clean your toilets, and mop your floors (sounds familiar, doesn't it?); and then expecting those descendants not to steal anything from your local malls. I guess looting begets itself, doesn't it? Interesting how that doesn't seem to click in the United States of America. But I guess looting is okay as long as you employ defintion #2, rather than definition #1. Because definition #1 might land you in jail or in your own coffin, but defintion #2 might land you in your very own gated, posh neighborhood with a country club where you and your fellow residents are seriously talking about building your own malls.

However, a lot of what you (in London, at that) "heard" was fantastic rumor and simply not true. The documentary covers that if you care to watch it.

The Muse Thread - Hate This & I'll Hate You
Hey, everyone. I just discovered Muse today. I got Black Holes & Revelations. It's amazing. This is my new shit. Take A Bow sounds a lot like Philip Glass to me. He's one of my fave artists. He's a minimalist composer. I'm really impressed with this album. I'm going to have to get into their old stuff now. Anybody know any artists like them. I'd love to know. Thanks.

The 'Greatest Voices of All Times' thread
I guess I should really listen to Jeff Buckley. He seems to be the most popular one here. I only know him because a version of Hallelujah plays at the end of Basquiat, and I found Jeff Buckley's version on the internet. Beautiful song. Great movie.

How far have you gone to see a Coldplay concert?
I traveled about 375 miles from Macon, GA to Florida to see them in Orlando and Tampa. That Tampa concert is one of the best concerts I've ever been to: outdoors (great sound), amphitheatre, and Fiona Apple opening. It doesn't get much better than that. Well worth the travel.

In no particular order, I really love (for non-classical music): Michael Stipe Michael Jackson Lauryn Hill Cassandra Wilson Kelis- style of the next coldplay album
I think it'll be nosier. Kinda like what R.E.M. did with Monster when Peter Buck wanted to get away from the sweet-sounding mandolin stuff for awhile. But I still think Coldplay will give us some piano and a couple ballads.- [Petition] Bring Back Coldplay @ Toronto DVD
signed :)- Chris Martin vs. Thom Yorke
Thank you all for your thoughtful input. I'd like to qualify and articulate a bit if the syntax of my post doesn't relay my feelings properly. I specifically said "a dichotomy" as opposed to "the dichotomy." When comparing any two things, there are infinitely many dichotomies that one can come up with. Comparison is a very popular and valid tool that we use to talk about things. Much of language is based on opposites. We call something pretty and then call something ugly. We call someone skinny and then call someone fat. I think that the systems of opposites in language can often be a limitation. Nonetheless, it is a powerful comment on the state of humanity. But anyway, I'm not so thoughtless as to say that Radiohead's and Thom's lyrics are merely about hopelessness, and Coldplay's lyrics are merely about hope. Of course, both bands (and Thom) explore many of the same things. I simply understand that regarding some of my personal issues, I have two conflicting feelings that make me tend to gravitate to one artist when I'm feeling one way and to another artist when I'm feeling another way. I just wanted to know if anybody else felt similarly. Again, thanks for all your input. I really appreciate it. :)- Chris Martin vs. Thom Yorke
Hey, everyone. I was just thinking about a dichotomy between the music of Coldplay and Radiohead & Thom Yorke. If I'm feeling hopeless and alienated (you know, "We all die alone anyway and that's just the way it is," etc., etc.) I gravitate more to Thom; if I'm feeling more hopeful about life and my problems, I gravitate more to Chris for help. Sometimes I want to listen to Fix You; sometimes I'd rather just say "fuck it" and listen to Black Swan for reassurance. Does anybody else feel this way about Chris, Coldplay and other, less hopeful music? I guess you can tell that I'd rather be on Chris's side. But confrontation is tough.- New law in California
Geez. I can't wait for the day when the dolphins rise up to take over the world and make everyone eat only fruits and vegetables and jack off in public at least once a week. I swear, this planet would be so much better off without homo sapiens. At least I won't be alive when we blow this poor fucker to smithereens. Or will I? ... OK, back to serenity. And away from this thread.- 'Bin Laden is dead' claim French secret service
Ditto. Even if he is dead, important dead people always have ready replacements. Just look at Bush: he replaced...himself. :(- What's the matter with X&Y?
Do you think people would be equally dissatisfied with Parachutes if it were the third album and X&Y were the first? I would guess so for the obvious reason that Coldplay's first fans would be different and accustomed to a certain sound that Parachutes largely does not have. Other than that, I think that many music fans associate a hipster coolness with liking a really big band (only) in the beginning when "nobody else liked them but me." On the other end, I think that many music fans convince themselves that they love everything that their favorite artists create. Either way, it's music, people. Like what you like, dislike what you dislike, then let's sit together and figure out how to end world poverty or something. Holla.- What If single
I love What If, but it's just like releasing Fix You since they have the same song structure. I feel the same way about Warning Sign and The Scientist. I think Coldplay did an excellent job in choosing a diverse group of singles from X&Y. Any song could legitimately have been a single.- There IS a problem with global warming... it stopped in 1998
To trump some cynicism, the earth's orbit gets closer to the sun. Therefore, global warming is very real regardless of how our politicians and media report information about it. Try to find reports by astrophysicists hard at work on making our planet last as long as it can instead of ignorant politicians and media that undoubtedly refuse to report the most detrimental facts about our planet to keep people from worrying (you saw how we acted with Y2K; what do you think would happen if the news started to report that the sun will eventually sublime everything on Earth--that is, unless we can knock our orbit away from the sun a bit). As far as a next ice age, I'm not up-to-date on which of two things will happen: the melting ice coming down to the oceans and freezing them, or the sun just completely melting the ice and making the oceans take over land. I'm not sure, but I believe the trend is that the ice is just completely melting at alarming rates. Either way, what little humans do to contribute to global warming is absolutely null. Global warming is simply what happens to certain planets in solar systems.- The Hardest Part Video Question
I'm going to see Death Cab For Cutie at the Tabernacle on the April 5th. Are you? Did they play Transatlanticism when you saw them last year? I love that song.- The Hardest Part Video Question
Song: Imitation of Life. Losing My Religion & other songs from those days. Video: Stand and Shiny Happy People come to mind. The footage, dancers, audience members, hosts, and general fun everybody has of The Hardest Part are the kind of fare that is often regarded as kooky. Stand and Shiny Happy People exude the same kind of kooky fare: no rock stars rock-starring, no spic-and-span production, just ordinary people seemingly hand-picked by R.E.M. to dance a simple, unusual, choreograhed routine and to have a good time in a video free from a world that might point and laugh. The Hardest Part, song and video, fits in well with late 80's, early 90's R.E.M.- The Hardest Part Video Question
