  1. Mr. Martin buys himself a $ 650.000 painting Chris Martin bought himself a Banksy painting. This doesn't surprise us, after all Banksy is a trendy graffiti artist and as we all know, Martin has a spray can soul. On the other hand, he could have gotten a cheaper deal, remember how genuine 60 dollar Banksy paintings were sold in a stall near Central Park during the artist's residence in NY in October of last year. In recent years, the art market has witnessed an increasing number of singers and movie stars acting as leading collectors and taste makers, remember Kanye West's visit to TEFAF, the world most important art fair, last year. That being said, I don't know whether or not Martin is a collector. Cunning investment, a display of generosity or the love of art, there will be a number of reasons behind this purchase. I, for one, think that the image of the hart-shaped balloon with band-aids is not the most original in the artist's portfolio but as Martin and Paltrow celebrated their wedding anniversary recently, the image might have resonated with them. Anyway, what do you think of Martin's latest purchase? Do you think we will see more of him collecting? Do any of you know of previous purchases? Personally, if I could afford it, I would also like a banksy painting, albeit a more inventive image. http://www.google.be/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CDAQqQIwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.timeslive.co.za%2Flifestyle%2F2014%2F01%2F13%2Fbanksy-painting-gets-650-000-bid-from-chris-martin-at-charity-gala&ei=FMTTUpONFuXR7AbopoH4BA&usg=AFQjCNHzLcDQ1JfgaisVT9RzDoGOxgLMvw&sig2=tWfHa8x50UbWAd7jeCoOuw&bvm=bv.59026428,d.bGE http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-x1Lj1WOY6V4/UtLjtUjw9MI/AAAAAAAAKUM/_IMv6dC0M54/s1600/Banksy_Heart_Balloon.jpg
  2. I would like to call Atlas the first example of post-Coldplay. Its haunting beginnings go back to Parachutes but towards the end there is that grandeur resulting from five years of stadium rock, but it is used sparsely, not in a distasteful ETIAW way. The soundscape is beautiful. To me it is a good sign that Coldplay have chosen to give wide exposure to this single as opposed to Moving to Mars, this other gem which had more or less the same vibe but was removed from the MX EP in the end. Viva post-Coldplay. I rated it 8/10.

  4. Let me rephrase that. The muzak accompanying the ad reminds me of the last chords of the intro. It has been a long day. For now, I will go and die on my own without making a mess and never bother you again. Hell, I don't even know what a troll tread is. I know trolls.
  5. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpfkI5FK_NY]Citroën DS4 TV Advert 2012 - YouTube[/ame] Am I the only one thinking of the last part of the Paradise intro every time I see this advert?
  6. For me, music is about experiencing emotions. I heard the album for the first time and I don't feel anything. I don't advocate going back to Parachutes, but this record doesn't do anything for me. Moving to Mars did, that song moved me. I don't understand why that little gem wasn't included in the album.
  7. walewein replied to jimmyarts's topic in Paradise
Robert, this is a good cover in its own right and you are a skillful pianist, but I'd really like you to do a second one, because the song deserves it and you have the technical abilities for it. First, the glissandi need to go, they're rather cheesy and it adds a nervousness to the song which doesn't do it justice. Then, you should concentrate on the instrumental opening of the song, which clearly is a majestic masterpiece of Brian Eno with rather subtle changes between major and minor chords. Martins refrain (para para paradise), well, it kind of ruins the song. Could you make a more mysterious, darker, gloomier version of the song, focus some more on complex chords rather than hop over the keys and focus on the subtleties of the intro and the orchestrated parts? That would be ever so lovely and perhaps, it would make people appreciate this song a bit more. I'm looking forward to this.
  8. Setlist was the same as yesterday, in Poland. I was there.
  9. loving the visuals on the pyramid! must have cost a few quid. Come on, fireworks :)
  10. in general, mr. Buckland is doing pretty well tonight :)
  11. Am I the only one who thought the beginning of the song closely resembled parts of Underworld's Born Slippy? This is a very uplifting song which has summer festivals written al over it. It's nice enough, easy listening, but I do hope the new album has an edgier, a more inventive and perhaps even stubborn side to it as well.
  12. Last summer, the management of Belgian based festival Rock Werchter offered Rozemarijn, an organisation providing care and a home for the mentally challenged, the opportunity to set up a tent in the artists' village, the inner sanctum of the festival, usually a no-go area for those not performing. Artists were given a chance to paint a plaster face, these will be auctioned off October 22 in Antwerp, Belgium. There is a possibility to bid online, I suppose. Amongst the artists/groups coorperating are: Lily Allen, Bloc Party, Elbow, Fleet Foxes, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Oasis, Nick Cave, Placebo and last but not least Coldplay. Chris Martin drew a picture of all four coldplay members and all of them signed it as well. Estimates are below 150 euros per lot but as this is a charity auction, the organisation would be pleased to collect 50.000 euros. There's a link, including pictures, below. Happy bidding! http://www.bernaerts.be/nl/Page_catalogue.asp?sale=120&dayid=411&photo=1&lotx=2000&loty=2048
  13. seriously, I'm trying to write a review with a little substance here, all you do is go on about gaga and chris's hair... :)
  14. Back home. It was a special concert. As I believe in the equal distribution of money, I decided not to pay for this gig but listen to it in the middle of nature, close to the river Dyle, 300 metres from the stage. I've paid for more than one concert, bought cds and tour books, but since I live close to Werchter and since I've already experienced this concert last october (Sportpaleis - Antwerp), I decided to get this one for free. It's quite strange to hear Coldplay amidst nature, the good thing is the sound is so bloody loud on the festival grounds that, being a little farther away, I got fabulous quality sound without damaging my ears. And I could look at the stars during the performance of Yellow, that's a first. So, details for those that couldn't make it. Setlist, same as Arras, but no I'm a believer. Chris covered Michael Jackson's Billie Jean, I think it followed Green Eyes or The hardest part, which he, by the way, dedicated to Lady Gaga, who was also playing the festival. Billie Jean wasn't the only reference to Michael Jackson though, Martin slightly altered the last words of Violet Hill and dedicated the song to the singer. Postcards from far away, I'm not too sure I heard that either, but there was a nice bit of piano with which Martin tied up Politik with Lovers in Japan. Someone else will know for sure. Viva La Vida was, as always, the highpoint of the set, with the crowds going "oh oh oh" for minutes after they ended the song, even when Lost had finished, they briefly started it again. It's quite impressive, hearing this from a distance. Martin did talk quite a lot during the concert, he even apologised for not speaking any French or Flemish. So he seems to know Belgium is a bilingual country, which not many singers do. Overall appreciations: nice concert, no vocal or instrumental flaws, nothing outstanding though, no real surprises. Ok, there were the techno versions of Talk and God put a smile, but I heard those already and they're not that inventive to be honest. I didn't like the new speed of Yellow, by the way. Much too fast. Ah well, I suppose it's difficult to alter setlists because such a large production is a well-oiled machine. Anyway, it was a nice evening, a unique way to listen to Coldplay and it didn't cost me anything. Now I'm off to bed.
  15. I'll be there, I didn't get a ticket though. Sportpaleis gig last october was expensive enough :) I live nearby so I'm going by bike. I know a deserted place near the grounds where I can listen in solitude. Quite an experience, I very much enjoyed Sigur Ros last year! Shame I'll be missing the Lovers in Japan butterflies though. That was magical last october. Did the butterflies appear at Arras?
  16. Belgium's EEN-website (national broadcasting service) confirmed that British Band Coldplay will headline Rock Werchter on the third of July this year. The group only reserves one weekend for festivals, one of which being Rock Werchter. Performing alongside Coldplay at the 35th edition of the festival will be Metallica and The Killers. http://teletekst.een.be/tt_een.php?p=812&g=on&s=0&r=0&x=1 Setlist Life In Technicolor Violet Hill Clocks In My Place Yellow 42 Fix You Strawberry Swing God Put A Smile Upon Your Face (Partial Techno Remix) Talk (Partial Techno Remix) The Hardest Part (Chris Solo Piano) Billy Jean (Michael Jackson cover) Viva La Vida Lost! 17. I love LiT2. It sounds really epic, just the way I like it. Epic and grand, a little bombastic but not overdone. I hope it is longer in time than LiT 1 though.
  18. With all respect to those musicians, their covers are quite literal transcriptions of the original arrangements. I would have loved it if they did something creative with them. I mean, they're classically trained musicians, why not make slightly more imaginative/risky versions/variations of the songs? I like the clip from clocks, it sounds very much like the theme to A zoo (Nyman) and I like God put a smile as well because it is dissonant.
  19. Reign of Love is beautiful, emotional, honest. It's like a cuddle from Chris Martin in the middle of "all that noise and all that sound". I liked it and I like it more every day. I don't know what the lyrics mean exactly but I think this could have been written on the day Chris went to a funeral on a boat and he was so exhausted he fell asleep on the way back. I think the song is about loss. Anyone care to explain the lyrics line by line? I think they're rather complicated, not easy at all.
  20. In the Jimmy Kimmel version of Violet Hill, Chris Martin clearly sings "and the fox became God". The video is here: http://www.coldplaying.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45613
  21. In the Kimmel version of Violet Hill, Martin clearly sings "and the fox became God", not and the fog. Shouldn't we alter that? I don't know if this remark is already posted elsewhere, there are so many threads concerning lyrics...
  22. Yes, exactly my thoughts. It's still a little early for an interpretation, but I think the combination of a classic love song and a sociocritical, anti war hymn works beautifully. Shame the melody is really crap though :)
