Egyptian Uprising
Mubarak family fortune could reach $70bn, say experts Egyptian president has cash in British and Swiss banks plus UK and US property Phillip Inman Gamal and Hosni Mubarak are reported to have built up huge fortunes, including properties in London. Photograph: Cris Bouroncle/AFP/Getty Images President Hosni Mubarak's family fortune could be as much as $70bn (£43.5bn) according to analysis by Middle East experts, with much of his wealth in British and Swiss banks or tied up in real estate in London, New York, Los Angeles and along expensive tracts of the Red Sea coast. After 30 years as president and many more as a senior military official, Mubarak has had access to investment deals that have generated hundreds of millions of pounds in profits. Most of those gains have been taken offshore and deposited in secret bank accounts or invested in upmarket homes and hotels. According to a report last year in the Arabic newspaper Al Khabar, Mubarak has properties in Manhattan and exclusive Beverly Hills addresses on Rodeo Drive. His sons, Gamal and Alaa, are also billionaires. A protest outside Gamal's ostentatious home at 28 Wilton Place in Belgravia, central London, highlighted the family's appetite for western trophy assets. Amaney Jamal, a political science professor at Princeton University, said the estimate of $40bn-70bn was comparable with the vast wealth of leaders in other Gulf countries. "The business ventures from his military and government service accumulated to his personal wealth," she told ABC news. "There was a lot of corruption in this regime and stifling of public resources for personal gain. "This is the pattern of other Middle Eastern dictators so their wealth will not be taken during a transition. These leaders plan on this." Al Khabar said it understood the Mubaraks kept much of their wealth offshore in the Swiss bank UBS and the Bank of Scotland, part of Lloyds Banking Group, although this information could be at least 10 years old. There are only sketchy details of exactly where the Mubaraks have generated their wealth and its final destination. Christopher Davidson, professor of Middle East politics at Durham University, said Mubarak, his wife, Suzanne, and two sons were able to accumulate wealth through a number of business partnerships with foreign investors and companies, dating back to when he was in the military and in a position to benefit from corporate corruption. He said most Gulf states required foreigners give a local business partner a 51% stake in start-up ventures. In Egypt, the figure is commonly nearer 20%, but still gives politicians and close allies in the military a source of huge profits with no initial outlay and little risk. "Almost every project needs a sponsor and Mubarak was well-placed to take advantage of any deals on offer," he said. "Much of his money is in Swiss bank accounts and London property. These are the favourites of Middle Eastern leaders and there is no reason to think Mubarak is any different. Gamal's Wilton Place home is likely to be the tip of the iceberg." Al Khabar named a series of major western companies that, partnered with the Mubarak family, generated an estimated $15m a year in profits. Aladdin Elaasar, author of The Last Pharaoh: Mubarak and the Uncertain Future of Egypt in the Obama Age, said the Mubaraks own several residences in Egypt, some inherited from previous presidents and the monarchy, and others the president has commissioned. Hotels and land around the Sharm el-Sheikh tourist resort are also a source of Mubarak family wealth. Original Article

Couldn't find the exact sweater I got but this one has a similar cut though it's in a darker shade of this beige and with a certain nice pattern. Gotta love patterns!

IF INTERESTED. Though I'm not sure why Lebanon seems to be out of the picture.. And THIS is pretty much perfect if you wanna follow up on the events happening there. And also for actual live TV coverage. Been watching this the whole time along with Euronews (<3) and BBC, also some CNN (WHICH I DO NOT RECOMMEND) and Al-Arabiyah for other different perspectives and of course Egyptian's State TV, Nile, for some humour.

I think it's great! As much as I like brown and earthy colours though I'm not so big about this brown, seems quite bland somehow. But I think, if you got it and all, you should be aware of the things that you're gonna combine it with, they should definitely make a nice contrast and be more vibrant in a way. My thoughts haha.

^It would pretty awful if it happened, I agree. But well I still think they're a very small percent of the people,. And I doubt the people would accept if it happened. Ah, well, Ok then. Think he answered it there for you Tammi hehe. And I pretty much agree with you on everything. Great post! ^Not a few hours but yeah. Egypt army: will not use violence against citizens CAIRO Jan 31 (Reuters) - The army said on Monday it would not use force against Egyptians staging protests demanding President Hosni Mubarak step down, a statement said. It said "freedom of expression" was guaranteed to all citizens using peaceful means. It was the first such explicit confirmation by the army that it would not fire at demonstrators who have taken to the streets of Egypt since last week to try to force Mubarak to quit. "The presence of the army in the streets is for your sake and to ensure your safety and wellbeing. The armed forces will not resort to use of force against our great people," the army statement said. "Your armed forces, who are aware of the legitimacy of your demands and are keen to assume their responsibility in protecting the nation and the citizens, affirms that freedom of expression through peaceful means is guaranteed to everybody." It urged people not resort to acts of sabotage that violate security and destroy public and private property. It warned that it would not allow outlaws and to loot, attack and "terrorise citizens". I have a really close friend in Egypt too, so the fuck what. Who cares about Israel now, geez. Protesters are out en masse again today, in the seventh day of protests. It would appear there are even more in the streets than before. A “march of millions” is being planned for Tuesday in the hopes of finally ousting Mubarak. --- [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hBV0ApIh_4]YouTube - Waseem Wagdi, Egyptian protester. Egyptian Embassy, London. 29.1.11[/ame] --- REUTERS/Asmaa Waguih --- “Small Girl on Army Track, She was chanting: Freedom, Freedom” Photo credit: Ramy Raoof --- Jimmy Carter: Unrest in Egypt Is 'Earth-Shaking' PLAINS, Georgia -- Former President Jimmy Carter, who brokered a peace accord between Israel and Egypt in 1978, on Sunday called the political unrest and rioting in Egypt earth-shaking and said that President Hosni Mubarak probably will have to step down. Carter told a Sunday school class that he teaches that the unrest is "the most profound situation in the Middle East" since he left office in 1981. He said he thinks the unrest will ease in the next week, but his "guess is Mubarak will have to leave." The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reported Carter's remarks made at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains and his spokeswoman confirmed them. "The United States wants Mubarak to stay in power, but the people have decided," Carter said. His spokeswoman, Deanna Congileo, said no further statement would be issued. Carter brought Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin together for the peace accord signed in Washington, D.C. Sadat and Begin shared the Nobel Peace Prize for the treaty. Mubarak was vice president at the time and became president in 1981 when Sadat was assassinated by opponents of the agreement. Carter said that as Mubarak's 30-year rule has continued, the Egyptian leader has become more politically corrupt. "He has perpetuated himself in office," Carter said. Mubarak has appointed Omar Suleiman, the country's intelligence chief, as vice president. "He's an intelligent man whom I like very much," Carter said of Suleiman, with whom he says he has maintained a relationship. "In the last four or five years when I go to Egypt, I don't go to talk to Mubarak, who talks like a politician," Carter said. "If I want to know what is going on in the Middle East, I talk to Suleiman. And as far as I know, he has always told me the truth."
