Here is an interesting article from NPR regarding how the song was created: http://www.npr.org/blogs/allsongs/2014/07/07/328139263/song-premiere-an-unlikely-collaboration-from-cat-power-and-coldplay Song Premiere: An Unlikely Collaboration From Cat Power And Coldplay by July 07, 201411:00 AM ET Wish I Was Here Courtesy of the artist It seems the unlikeliest of collaborations: , a American songwriter and singer who can be quiet and somewhat insular, and , now a veteran band from London that is immensely popular, confident and bold. And still, what happens in this recording, the title track for the film Wish I Was Here, feels so right. Cat Power's voice fits nicely in the piano melody of the song; maybe it's a bit shinier than what she'd do on her own or a bit darker than what Chris Martin of Coldplay might do ... but not by much. Listen to "Wish I Was Here" by Cat Power and Coldplay Here's how it was made: Zach Braff, the creator of the film Wish I Was Here, gave an early version of the film to Coldplay's Chris Martin. Braff told us via email that Martin got the band together to work on the song. "Chris had the idea that it would be sung by a woman. I thought that was a genius idea, because one of the things the film is about is a strong woman (Kate Hudson's character) becoming the matriarch of her family. When Chris and I were talking, we both kind of simultaneously said, 'Cat Power.' I reached out to Chan Marshall (aka Cat Power) and she and I met and really clicked. I set her up to watch the film in her apartment. The whole time she was watching she kept texting me all the different parts she was loving. She said yes the instant it was over." Chan Marshall went to Electric Lady studios in NYC and tracked her voice. Chris Martin would later add his harmonies with Coldplay producing the song. Zach Braff calls it his favorite cut on the record, a soundtrack filled with originals from and and other tunes by , Hozier and , to name a few. More Songs From 'Wish I Was Here' Zach Braff has worked to raise the money via Kickstarter and make this spiritual followup to Garden State, and with songs like this it sounds like it was all worthwhile. "Showing my favorite artist my film, having them write a track that was inspired by their experience and then putting that art back into the film has been one of the most thrilling aspects of making Wish I Was Here," he writes. The film will be released on July 18. The soundtrack will be out on July 15 (you can pre-order it now or ). Here's the full track list for the soundtrack: 1. The Shins - So Now What 2. Gary Jules - Broke Window 3. Radical Face - The Mute 4. Hozier - Cherry Wine (Live) 5. Bon Iver - Holocene 6. Badly Drawn Boy - The Shining 7. Jump, Little Children - Mexico 8. Cat Power & Coldplay - Wish I Was Here 9. Allie Moss - Wait It Out 10. Paul Simon - The Obvious Child 11. Japanese Wallpaper - Breathe In (feat. Wafia) 12. Bon Iver - Heavenly Father 13. Aaron Embry - Raven's Song 14. The Weepies - Mend 15. The Head and the Heart - No One To Let You Down

Coldplay's Yellow to be on Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" Soundtrack According to IndieWire, Coldplay's song Yellow is to be on the soundtrack to Richard Linklater's film "Boyhood" which films over the span of 12 years with the same group of actors. The movie's release date is JUly 11, 2014 .indiewire.com/theplaylist/soundtrack-for-richard-linklaters-boyhood-includes-arcade-fire-coldplay-flaming-lips-more-20140613 Soundtrack For Richard Linklater's 'Boyhood' Includes Arcade Fire, Coldplay, Flaming Lips & More During the first screening of Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" at the Sundance Film Festival in January, one of the observations made from the audience during the Q&A was the jam-packed soundtrack of indie-rock songs, Coldplay, Wilco, The Flaming Lips, Jeff Tweedy, The Arcade Fire, and so on and so forth; songs that worked like chapters of the beginning of each new year in this twelve-year saga. During said Q&A, Linklater noted that he had not attained licenses for all the songs in the film yet and cautioned that the music may not be final. This lead to many journos speculating that the film's final soundtrack could end up being distinctly different from the film screened in Utah. But those who've watched the music industry diminish over the last few years know that music licensing has become a completely different game. Licensing all that music in the late '90s or early aughts would have been cost-prohibitive, but in this day and age where revenue streams have totally changed (most bands don't make much money off their album sales anymore), so has the structure of music licensing. In short, it's rather inexpensive these days and by the looks of the soundtrack details that have arrived today, Linklater scored almost all the major songs that were in the movie, including cuts by Cat Power, Bob Dylan, Wilco, Cobra Starship, even Paul McCartney & Wings and The Black Keys (among many others; the Tweedy track is new too and so far only played live). See? Toldja it wouldn't be so bad. (The most notable absence? Daft Punk's "Get Lucky," which was in the Sundance cut, but not the release version.) Anyhow, a little over a month separates many of our U.S. readers from Linklater’s ambitious coming-of-age film. Some of us caught the decade-spanning film at Sundance and liked it so much that last Tuesday we placed the intimate epic among the better offerings in the first half of 2014. You’ve already seen the evocative trailer and some clips, so why not take a peek at some new images from the sprawling film ahead of its theatrical release next month? Additionally, eight new images from Linklater’s film have arrived online to get you all weepy and nostalgic for your long-gone childhood. In case you need a refresher, Linklater shot a few weeks worth of footage of Ellar Coltrane every year for the last twelve years, following his character from childhood into college with Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke as his divorced parents. Though our initial review wasn't as hyperbolic as some out there, we still found it “a remarkable accomplishment that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.” “Boyhood” opens in limited release stateside on July 11th, the soundtrack comes out July 8th. Check out the stills and tracklist below. [soundtrack via FilmMusicReporter] "Boyhood" soundtrack details 1. Summer Noon – Jeff Tweedy 2. Yellow – Coldplay 3. Hate To Say I Told You So – The Hives 4.
