On one hand I saw one of the most ridiculous fireworks displays I've ever seen. On the other hand I went from euphoric to glum to lonely and depressed, to wanting to join a revolution to apathy. Basically what happens when I spend hours in silent conversation with myself. For more detail, I saw a shit film during the day, and when I followed my flatmate to a party in the evening, realized that I had absolutely no desire to speak with all but one person there. Everything just seemed nauseatingly transparent and caricatured. Normally I'll just recede into books and blogs in those situations, but because of the holiday I decided to wander wencesclas square alone where I drank a couple beers, people watched, and winced at fireworks and firecrackers. hmm, I normally delete these posts in retrospect. Oh well.

At risk of being captain obvious: companies/magazines do not have opinions. Individuals have opinions. For example, each pitchfork review is written solely by a specific individual, and if you read reviews of consecutive albums by a band, you may be scratching your head at the disparity of perspectives. I couldn't name a current critic if I tried. I'm unaware off hand of an looming Roger Ebert equivalents in the business. However, I quite enjoy reading reviews, as they help me engage intellectually with the music, and sometimes summarize works in ways I otherwise could not.

I just don't get the Cloud Nothings, Grimes, Passion Pit, Ariel Pink hype. By contrast, I don't particularly enjoy the Frank Ocean album (just have a stylistic block to that type of music), but I respect the quality of its writing and production.

I remember seeing Efrim Menuck smoking a cigarette alone outside a sort of mall complex where they were playing. I was stunned, and just wanted to make sure. Me: Hey, Efrim Menuck? Efrim: How's it going? Me: *something awkward and fanboyish before waving and walking away 10 seconds later* I also met my idol who wasn't even touring just teching at a concert. But he was cool to chat and take a picture because I'm one of like 10 people in the world who would even recognize him. The whole autograph business is weird for me. I have a few from waiting around after concerts, but you feel like just another customer in a supermarket. Even at very small venues I've passed up a chance for autographs out of my awkward fear of annoying someone I really respect and remembering what a dick I was every time I listen to them.
