After death
i think what many neglect to acknowledge about philosophy and the sciences is that beneath a small assortment of 'certainties' is an iceberg of work excluding mythical, unscientific ideas. In short, no. Religion aside, argued 'soul' theories are mostly grounded in substance dualism. The idea that the conscious mind is fundamentally distinct from the physical brain ("can a brain surgeon see a thought etc."). This is generally rejected by the academic community, though there are more popular variations that keep some kind of dualism intact. The problem is that necessary immortality of this conscious side never really enters into it, so most apologists and theologians don't bother trying to debate the issue in the secular arena the way they often do with ethics or the existence of a deity.

Watched and enjoyed the whole thing. The self-deprecation was charming. Sorry it was so stressful, but I don't think it was a waste.

Puma threw a flashmob for the Dortmund team the day after the match. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdGT4ON0MnE]PUMA Football: Flashmob for Borussia Dortmund - YouTube[/ame] It's hilarious because the most of the team is so stoic and non-plussed. Plus, the whole thing was done in English. Just a terrible idea altogether.

What was the meanest/worst thing you've done to someone?
That's much closer to this thread (browsing now, and some are quite serious). I was actually thinking of this one:

So that the color scheme, and semi nazi-ish (you can pick out 2/3rds of a swastika maybe) font works fantastically with the 'Come On You Whites' chant. ---

What was the meanest/worst thing you've done to someone?
I had a bit of the same growing up. Even today I opt for 'planet' over 'world' for fear of sounding weird, so it hit me harder for that reason as well. I remember reading an article on a reddit page similar to this, and that one got extremely serious, people making mistakes and being responsible for multiple deaths and so forth.

^Same thing happened with Fulham. Take it away Ray Hudson: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKQWadlYYDU]Ray Hudson's rant about Fulham's new crest (logo) - YouTube[/ame] Saha or Zaha, he was twice as good as anyone else on the pitch. I could see him being better than Ashley Young or Nani if he gets minutes in next season. --- Supposedly Lewandowski's agent has said he will also be signing for Munich. If it's true it's downright shameless. http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsoccer/bundesliga/story/lewandowski-to-join-bayern-munich-from-dortmund-says-agent-052713

What was the meanest/worst thing you've done to someone?
Once had an awkward moment where my friends and I were eating at a table, and across from us were two other kids, and one of them mentioned they had just seen some movie. I asked the other how it was, and he said 'awthum!'. So umm, I thought he was just going for comedic effect, so I responded 'awthum?' without realizing that the kid actually had a lisp. I'm pretty sure I apologized, but I felt like shit for a while afterwards. And once when I was like 10, we had a mini chess tournament at my tiny school club where I was generally considered the best. Anyway I blundered against this really young kid, and I was so afraid of having to explain it to my other friends that afterwards I marked down on the sheet that I had won instead. Still, if that's the worst I can think of atm, I think I'm doing pretty well.

Crime and Punishment
Good point. I wouldn't argue that every criminal or destructive act was rationally thought out or justified, and thus executed with peace of mind. If anything, many or most cases of extreme, incomprehensible acts, are generally attributed to insanity or a disturbed mind. but it Still, actions generally stem from desire. I would like to see people explode, so I build a bomb. I am angry at this person, so I want him to die. All it takes is for the higher, rational faculties that typical keep things in check to lean the same way or to disappear completely. It's not uncommon for people to form themselves around 'villain' archetypes, but it's often for ironic contrast to a culture or system of values that they have found cause to dismiss.

Crime and Punishment
It is society's job to inculcate basic moral awareness in everybody. Unlike children's films, nobody does evil for evil's sake. They have somehow been inculcated to believe that what they are doing is good or desirable in one form or another. What is a criminal/hero without action? You don't need ultimate responsibility to applaud good behavior or to disparage bad behavior. We applaud heroes because they exemplify what we wish to be, or what we think ought to be. But all the same, it's sensible to acknowledge that it's a matter of chance that yourself or the hero were not born into a different environment in which they may have held a very different set of values.

Purposeful or accidental?

Crime and Punishment
I concur with what I've read from Reilly and Braddock here. I think the only role that the Law should serve is to prevent future crime, and, if possible, rehabilitate prisoners to where they can function in society. No good or justice comes from gratuitous acts of revenge or punishment. This is largely dictated by my stance on free will. Monstrous murderers are only the vehicles for an unfortunate series of causal events. This does not exclude desire, of course. But the fact that they possessed said desires is a causal accident. I generally hate horror films where the crowd applauds when the bad guy finally gets tortured and mutilated at the end.

Pornography
The wittiest, most engaging conversation I've had in Prague was with a stripper (a friend of a friend who was visiting), with whom I had some fantastic discussions about the appeal of 'violent' sports, and catharsis in Radiohead and David Lynch films. I was struggling to keep up (granted, she was popping adderall). I have to tip-toe carefully through the next few sentences because I by no means am I implying that stripping is by any means a 'lesser' profession (as if to say 'even STRIPPERS can be smart sometimes'). I will say that her appearance (implants, orange-tanned skin, whitish blonde hair) made what I learned of her interests and experience a bit more surprising. But I think I discerned indirectly that there was a connection. She was constantly exciting about discovering new things, and also kept making remarks about how she 'could never take herself seriously'. There was something admirable about how she ran each way without inhibitions. She was not the least bit ashamed (in fact completely open and matter-of-fact) about sex and stripping. If anything, she made it seem practical, as it was fun for her, and paid well enough for her to travel to Iceland or China at a moments notice without a qualm. I think society's obsessions with the morality of physical modesty, and the accompanying notions of 'respectable' jobs is largely based on an inherited mythology, and ontology that we don't altogether fully understand. If you divorce these mores from religion and/or the desire to fit in and be well-regarded by family and peers who do emphasize it, you are left with the general discomfort of sexual objectification. However, she didn't seem to mind, and I don't imagine it's difficult for many to compartmentalize different facets of their life (we all do, to a degree). Just as male-dominated society applauds wives who can be martha stewart in the kitchen and a stripper in the bedroom, why should she base her self-image on something she does a small percentage of her time. Do we judge a Tesco employee in the same respect? Someone who spends more time doing a very tedious and menial task for less money, and from which the customer and the employee derive extremely little enjoyment?
