  1. I'm Maurice Ravel, and EVERYONE steals from me! I'm Maurice Ravel, and EVERYONE steals from me! I am perhaps best known for my [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-4J5j74VPw]Bolero[/ame], which is my most successful work and is also not music. One of my other works is a very slow piece called [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYWqh1cTHJE]Pavane for a Dead Princess[/ame]. Does the section around 0:14 sound familiar? It should because Cat Stevens copied it in [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmOXNlID2Xs]The Foreigner's Suite, Part II[/ame] at around 5:20! It's even in the same key! Stevens begat Satriani, begat Coldplay, so you see, everyone copies off of me vicariously through each other! Oh well....at least nobody [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B8d2_jvDhc]lifted the whole piece and turned it into a song[/ame]....oh :furious2:!!!! I'm Maurice Ravel, and I'm as mad as hell!!!!
  2. M-M-M-M-M-M-M-M-M-M-M-MASSIVE FAILURE
  3. key change, etc. I already came to terms with the fact that there is no such thing as new material. The probability of someone coming up with the same chord progression in a world with billions of people is pretty good.
  4. You're not winning any points by trying to force a comparison and stir up some controversy out of nothing. Look at it this way: there are only 7 different notes in a scale before the scale starts over again an octave higher. There are sharps and flats in between, different number of notes per measure, lengths of notes, different keys, etc., but what I'm getting at is there's only so much that you can do with music. And music has been going on for the better part of human existence. So to chastise someone for not coming up with "new material" or "original content" is kinda pointless, because after a while, there is no more original content. Like the other guy who thought Coldplay copied their song and turned it into Viva la Vida....he admitted that both of them could have copied off of Zelda's Lullaby from The Legend of Zelda series.
  5. I actually think that VLVODAAHF is their best work to date. Why? Equalizer settings. I have an equalizer setting for each song in my iTunes; for the most part, each track on their previous albums works best under Rock. For this album, it's so much more nuanced and other equalizer settings work better than Rock. With "Life in Technicolor" and "The Escapist", I'm using Electronic. For "Cemeteries of London" and "Lovers in Japan", I'm using Latin. For "Lost!", I'm using Dance. For "Strawberry Swing", I'm using Hip-Hop. It brings out the little things in each track that make all the difference in the world.
  6. Wut Not sure I agree with everything in there, but it's an interesting perspective. How important Christian messages were in determining the lyrics for some of the songs, I can't say. Perhaps we should go all the way back to "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face"?
  7. It actually makes me think more of that ESPN commercial for Portugal - Euro Cup 08. Fancy footwork & all. Definitely hear the "Spanish influences" talked about in this song.
  8. To me, it's the most schizophrenic of all the songs. Granted this whole album is schizophrenic, but 42 is like the album in a nutshell. The opening half or so sounds very X&Y-ish....very odd harmonic progressions that kinda go in a circular movement. Then the middle to latter half sounds like something from "A Whisper"...fast paced, heavy percussion and guitar. And the ending goes back go X&Y again. So it's an X&Y - A Whisper - X&Y sandwich. Although I could be crazy.
  9. Violins (1st and 2nd) Violas Cellos Harpsichord Bass Drum Electric bass Cymbals Chimes (Tubular Bells) Electric Guitar Choir Keyboard Synthesizer Percussion (Kettle Drums) I hear no woodwinds of any kind. Just about every instrument is a string, percussion, or vocal.
  10. No more "=" sign, Chris?
  11. I'm likely crazy, but when I first heard this song, I thought of either Napoleon (Could be the album artwork talking) or some generic despotic leader whose rule was based on a combination of religious zealotry and realist politics of "dog-eat-dog". This leader was overthrown, but spared his life - hence "Viva la Vida". That little section from 0.27 - 0.40 feels almost like flashback point...sweeping streets, then pausing to remember. Chorus sounds like it might go like this: I hear Jerusalem bells a'ringing Roman Cavalry choirs a'singing: "Be my mirror, my sword and shield!" My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain Once you'd gone it was never, never an honest work That was when I ruled the world. I interpret the you'd gone part as an abandonment by God, or maybe the masses, or whatever power allowed him to achieve such stature. As such, it could result in the later verses saying "I know St. Peter won't call my name". I kinda think it is "won't", since he seems to look back on his rule with some hesitation..."puppet on a lonely string", and "Oh, who would ever want to be king?" HOWEVER, if the song is about a deposed, despotic ruler, then it could still be "St. Peter will call my name", since most rulers like that still feel they were 100% correct, despite how much wrong they did while in rule....the "history will look favorably upon me" argument, so to say. He could have some remorse about his rule, but feels that his humble street-sweeping is fair penance for such wrongs. I personally think "won't" is more correct than "will", but I can see how it could go either way. [i've been studying for a final in EU politics....can you tell? ;) ]
  12. I think that there's a slight mistake in the first verse. This what I hear when I listen closely: And I discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
  13. Am I crazy, but does the beat and lyrical progression feel similar to Chris' little bit in Kanye West's "Homecoming"? I listened to "Homecoming" then "Violet Hill", and there seem to be a few parallels to me. LOVE THIS SONG.
  14. Coldplay, YOU are the artists. This album is YOUR work. YOU should decide the title, not fans. Fans do not know what happened in the process of writing the songs, the challenges of recording and mixing, not to mention the practices, rehearsals, and planning of concerts. If you would like to let fans decide the title, then fine. But my personal belief is that when something is your brainchild, you make it your own and people can think whatever the hell they want to. I don't care if it's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.
