  1. Fair enough. As I said in an earlier post though, my rant was provoked by the comments of a few specific people (None of whom actually post on this thread), who took things to far and elevated speculation to include attacks on anyone who suggested their view were, in fact, mere speculation. I merely ended up posting it here due to lack of a better place to post it, even though noone here deserved to be on the recieving end of my harsh words. I would take issue though with your claim that such hype "makes the record company's job easier". In fact it is often the exact opposite. If a large number of people are overly wedded to false information, it makes it much harder for them to get the correct information out there Also, IMHO as this site is now quite well known as a source of Coldplay information (linking to other sites etc.) it is visited by a large number of people who, while not being members or regular visitors, have come to the site to find out about the forthcoming LP. If they see rumors presented as fact, they may well spread elsewhere. This, again IMHO, is not a good thing...
  2. Speculation I don't mind at all. What I don't like are when people Insist their speculation is fact, and then proceed to act pissy when whatever they thought turns out to not be true, even though in most cases they pulled that "truth" out of their ass and repeated it until they (and others) believed it to be fact. In short, I just want speculation to be labeled (and treated) as speculation, as opposed to fact. As for appearing on Today, I do feel it's kind of lame, but it is considered a prestegious thing to be booked on the show. Though, it kind of defeats the whole point of being a multi-millionaire rockstar if you have to be awake before noon...
  3. I think it;s mostly due to ambient sound (usually quite loud) from the concert area disrupting other segments of the show that air in the courtyard. Also, they want people to be visible in the other segments (even if just seen screaming outside the studio windows), so the last thing they want os for people to be paying attention to something else!:laugh3: It's (kind of) fun to go though, often, the bands will work the crowd a bit after their set (not sure if that word applies to a single song performance...), and the today show people give away free stuff to get the crowd worked up for the cameras. EDIT: I had a new thought, I've heard from others that when they're using the other stage further away from the actual today show studios the bands play longer, but both times I went to the Today show, they didn't use this, so I don't know anything for sure. (I'm not even sure if the alternate staging is a regular thing or if it was a one off used for a special reason.) EDIT of the EDIT: Infinite, I see on your blog that you intend to study film. Super cool! I am also a film major at at Uni here in Illinois. (though a bit ahead of you as this is my 5th year ending this may-Finally done YEA!) Now I just have to find something to do with the next 50 odd years of my life...
  4. When I was in NYC last summer, the Today show was indeed free as well as "first come first served" However, be aware that the single song you see acts play on TV is usually the entire performance. Due to other Television segments going on with the show after the band performs. the show does not allow bands to play additional songs after their one song segment is over. (There are of course ocasional exceptions, usually when the music segment is the outro to the show itself) Just wanted to let you guys know as there's been talk on here of 3-4 songs etc. It will most likely be a perormance of only one song (my guess would be whatever ends up as the first single from VLVOD) PS. You do indeed have to get there really early as in 3 or 4 a.m. to get a decent spot especially during peak tourist seasons like summer.
  5. Oh I'd agree the June 16th date is most likely official, I was thinking more about their piece on the contents of the album itself, which was more of a "fluff" piece based on what the band thought might be on the album rather then a solidified list of contents. Quite honestly, I forgot Rolling Stone actually set an actual date:embarassed: (My bad!) As a board regular however, you surely know that every month since last fall, someone has posted on this board that VLVOD is "confirmed" to be out in a few months, only to see much sadness and ringing of hands when that date comes and goes with no new info. As I said above, my post wasn't really meant toward any of the people who were posting on this particular thread as none of you are the main offenders in that regard. IMHO, Coldplay seemed to be rather uncomfortable with the "media blitz" that preceded the release of X&Y, and that's very likely a big part of why they're being much more subdued and low key for the new album. Also, keep in mind that things like "soon" or "in a few days" are relative terms, to those of us who have been waiting, we literally take a few days to mean two or three, whereas to Coldplay, Busy as they are being famous rockstars(;)), very likely intend a few days as a generic term for soon.
  6. To be fair to all you guys, my post (harshly worded as it was) was not really directed at any of you (on this thread at least). I just got set off, because I've got the flu, had a s%#tty day at work, and am getting tired of people latching on to stupid rumors then acting flipped out when there self imposed single release date, album drop date etc. doesn't happen when in fact they've pulled it out of thin air. I think some people here don't get how those articles in Rolling Stone etc. actually work. They interview the band, who tells them something that might possibly happen regarding the album, which they then report using language that makes the whole thing sound more official then it actually is, which are then posted here and latched onto as absolute fact, by everyone here, when they are just as likely to not be true as they are to be true. I am sure Capitol/EMI knows when the album is going to drop, they're probably just holding off until they can be absolutely certain, things are going to be a certain date/title/track list etc before going public. As has been mentioned above, the fact that the ban is gigging rather heavily over the summer still strongly supports a summer release, which is exactly what the only truly official sources of information have been saying a long time now. Violet Hill may or may not, be released as a "freebie", that at this point like so much else is simply a rumor. Technically, we still don't even know if LP$ will be called Viva la Vida or Death and all his Friends or if that entry meant they had narrowed it down to a choice between those two titles. Regardless, when the official announcement does come, many her will act scandalized that it isn't what they though it had been "confirmed" as (as they did when it was revealed not to be Prospeykt which everyone "knew" it was, despite the band never actually saying anything of the kind). Simply put, that's what bugs me, I'm not saying it's not fun to speculate, but for the time being, we've simply got to admit that we know very little (or even nothing) about the actual album (from actual contents to release date) and so to act like things have been changed when they were never actually confirmed in the first place is just foolish. Hopefully, this post made my point a little clearer. Thanks for taking the time to work through such a long post (assuming you did;)), and once again if I offended anyone here, I'm truly sorry...:(
  7. Just because they have not officially announced a release date for VLVOD DOES NOT mean there are no plans for it. The original speculated release date has been June for a while (as far back as the January issue of Q), so they've still got a while to announce the date. The problem is, most of you guys here are extremely quick to latch on to any unfounded rumors of release dates, and read way too much into any scap of info, whether or not it actually has anything to do with the release date or not! (Sorry if I come off strong, but it's getting d#@ned annoying having people latch on to every unfounded rumor like it came from the mouth of god himself) Regardless, the evidence STILL points to a June (maybe July) release (which is when bands do promo which is what a gig on Today essentially is) Again, sorry if I offended anyone, just needed to blow off steam...:veryangry2:
  8. To the best of my knowledge, none of the Lolla headlining slots have been "officially" confirmed (or at least announced though it's fairly certain that Radiohead and NIN are headlining.) however, even if both of those bands do headline, there's still an open headline slot for the third day...
  9. Maybe this is a stupid question, but how exactly do I get to the non coldplay multimedia section? (I'm kind of new here...)
  10. Anyone else dig them? Personally, I think their one of the best new bands I've heard in a long while.
  11. Hi All, Does anyone know where I can find a gigography for the killers (specifically their Hot Fuss Tour Dates from 2003-04)? I've looked everywhere and can't find one. I need it to settle a stupid debate with one of my mates (long story)... Surely this information is to be found somewhere:confused:
  12. Thanks, I knew what the TR2 sounded like, I was just wondering why it was dropped from the Pedal board for the Twisted Logic Tour. For the hardest part though. I think he gets his Tremolo effect with the Tremolo arm on his Jazzmaster, could be wrong on that though...
  13. I know the DL4 can creat Tremolo(ish) Effects, but I didn't stop to think he was using them in that way. Thanks for bringing up the possibility.
  14. What Song's does Johnny use the TR2 for? It seems to be absent from photos I've seen of his pedal board circa 2005 onward. Yet it sounds like he still uses some kind of tremolo on songs played since then...:\
  15. That's a perfectly rational attitude. the only people I personally take issue with are the idiots (and frankly they are IDIOTS) who have the gall to suggest that we shouldn't even TRY to help people, because there may be some problems with any solution. Ask them what they would do and they'll usually spout off something along the lines of "for the market to work, there must be people at the bottom as well as the top" Funny thing is though, the people who say things like this are (by definition) at the relative top of the spectrum. People who are starving could give a d#$% about they GDP index, they just want to eat... As I said in my previous post, fairtrade is far from perfect, but it's really low to critisize people for trying to make things better... (climbs down off soapbox...)
  16. In this clip it also sounds to me like he may be using the MXR Micro Amp as well. (for part of it anyway). Although it's just a boost pedal, if you set the gain to maximum, you can distort the preamp just enough to get a unique subtle overdrive that none of Jonny's usual pedals really would sound like (not the RAT or the tonebender anyway, don't think he has other distortion in his rig)
  17. That is cool. That means other dates could possibly come soon, although I'm curious to see how a brace of gigs in Japan in Aug. will fit in schedule wise with a summer tour in Europe and/or North America as has already been announced... Also, is it just me or does the Summersonic Lineup seem lighter this year as opposed to the past? Aside from coldplay (and possibly the verve), there seem to be fewer "big names" than usual. (off ion a bit of a useless tangent there...)
  18. Corrico, While I will agree that you raise some valid points that have been overlooked by many here, allow me to take issue with some of what you said (while agreeing with other bits). First, saying that there is inherent corruption in a system that will hurt some people it's supposedly helping seems to me to be a bit of a non starter. Perhaps I've a bit naive, but it seems to me that that could be said about any system you put into place to deal with any social issue such as this. When practiced fairly, and (to some degree), fairly regulated, free market capitalism is, all things considered, a fairly good way to distribute limited resources. However, even the staunchest defender of said must admit that there are, in such a system, a number of people who are hurt by the vagaries of the system through little to no fault of their own. Hence the appeal of alternative economic ideologies, most especially to many of the poorest and most dispossessed among us. That these systems carry their own set of problems, often worse then those they were intended to stamp out is largely immaterial in all practical sense. Human nature is such that greed, corruption, elitism, etc. will always be present in any system and we are forced to deal with these issues "stop-gap" as best we can. (sorry if this doesn't make clear sense, I'm tired and my brain is working faster then my ability to word thoughts at the moment...) Secondly, while I agree that to some extent protectionist measures do limit competition which in ordinary scenarios will retard growth and hurt the poor in the long run, the ability to experience this kind of growth and the benefits it provides are contingent on a basic level of infrastructure which in many cases is simply not present in the types of nations/economies things like Fairtrade benefit most. To wit: It is indeed better to teach a man how to fish, but it is also necessary to provide him with enough fish to feed him through the learning process. To my understanding, Fairtrade exists not as a permanent solution, but rather to serve as a bridge to enable people to survive while the ultimate (and slow) goal of reform on the governmental/economic level is implemented. On political embargo's etc. We agree. The Cuban government, to use your example, has for years been able to channel their populace's dissatisfaction with governmental issues into hatred of the U.S. led trade embargo, which I believe was your central point. Lastly, regardless of the pure validity of the issues at hand (or lack thereof depending on your perspective), I must contend that it is in fact extremely valid to criticize the biased nature of the group that released this study. The simple fact is, they are directly bankrolled by corporations whose bottom line is directly effected (positively) by the downfall of fairtrade initiatives. Like you said, do with these views what you will, just wanted to contribute my two cents...
  19. As far as "weird song titles" go I'm not worried at all, Many, Many bands (Radiohead is the first that comes to my mind), have "weird" song titles for what turn out to be beautiful songs. Fake Plastic Trees is a fairly "dumb" name for a song, but (IMHO) that song is one of the finest pieces of music ever made. For that matter is Coldplay even the most "normal" or "cool" sounding name for a band? Probably not, but I'm sure most here would rate the quality of Coldplay's music fairly highly...:wink3: In short, I don't much like arbitrary labels for things, least of all music, and fail to see how such things hold much meaning for the quality of the music itself... Of course, the new songs could actually be about a glass and a swing composed of strawberries, in which case...:embarassed:
  20. Re: Eno Vs. Phil It should be noted that Eno has had a longstanding habit of reffering to himself as a "non-musician", so the entries could be from him, even allowing for the fact that the writer claims to not be a musician... Also. some random thoughts: SoS (Single) was released May 23rd 2005, a little over 2 weeks before X&Y In addition while a promo tour is standard fair for a lot of major releases, the one for X&Y was unusually involved. Usually it's just a handful of TV appearences/interviews and such, not a full round of club gigs. Also, I get the impression that Coldplay wants to avoid the overblown media onslaught that was the release of the last album in favor of something more understated and that they now find the whole thing "tacky" looking back on it, at least from everything I've seen/read on the subject. Second, I doubt there was ever really all that much to the "strike" rumors. Sure Coldplay most likely wants to leave EMI ASAP, but the only evidence that they were "on strike" was a single vague comment by their U.S. management. Mostly, it was just gossip and should be treated as just that. Lastly, even if they were on bad terms with EMI, most of their non UK distribution is through Capitol which although a subsidiary of EMI is allowed a high degree of autonomy in it's day to day functionallity, handling of releases etc. Most of the issues effecting EMI recordings in the UK have/will have little to no impact on releases elsewhere and it's entirely possible that Coldplay could release material through the Capitol brand even if they had issues releasing through Parlophone. Just things to mull...
  21. During the Parachutes era, was Johnny already using the Deville's or was he using a pair of Fender Twin Reverb combos instead? I've found sources that report both...
  22. Recently I found some photos which seem to show Jonny using a Marshall Cab on stage at some point. You can also clearly see it in many photos of him in the studio (with a good example being the "jazz" video). It seems odd he would use something of higher wattage the his Deville's in the studio, and I can't find anything on this in any published info on his setup. Am I going crazy:stunned: or has he actually had a Marshall at some point?
  23. Hi, Does anyone know what Amps Andy Dunlop from Travis Uses? I know he uses Orange Amps but I can't find info on his Amp heads anywhere. From photos I've seen, his head looks like an AD30 but he seems to get a really clear tone from it that I've not heard from an AD30. Thanks
  24. Thanks, was not awar of GPSUYF, can't really hear it as much in that as some of the others.
