  1. I don't think he had an "assigned" guitar for the scientist. He seemed to use whatever guitar wasn't being used for something else that particular gig, so he may have played it with the Jag on some gigs for all I know... BTW getting back to the topic of the thread, I've managed to get a bit of information on Jon's new rig: His Les paul is a Les Paul Custom (meing mini-humbuckers as opposed to standard ones) He's also switched his tuning pedal (it's still a Boss, but not the tr2 any longer, it's the chromatic tuner that is sideways as opposed to up and down, too lazy to look up the model number at the moment, but you can look it up easily enough if you're interested...) I've also heard some talk that he uses the following (however PLEASE treat these with a grain of salt as I'm unsure if these are actually used by Jon) Sobbat DB-1 Drive breaker Distortion Boss RE-20 (this is the digital modeling pedal based on the old Roland Space Echo)
  2. You've got it backwards, the Jag hasn't really seen use since the AROBTTH days, whereas the Jazzmaster was used throughout the twisted logic tour (usually in the electric portion of the scientist, and for how you see the world as well). The Jag has a much punchier tone (almost like an overdriven Strat) While the Jazzmaster is better suited to fuzzed out tones like those in Sleep chant. After hearing the album, I'm almost positive that Death and all his friends was also recorded on a GLP (or his 335), don't actually think any of the other tracks that made it on to the finished record were...
  3. So he still uses the thinlines as his main live guitars then? (I haven't seen video of the amsterdam gig, so I can't speak to that.) In one of the earlier interviews on the progress of VLVODAAHF (Which was still unamed then) Jon mentioned he relied mostly on a Les Paul in the new sessions. (Perhaps most of those songs were scrapped?) Sorry if I'm in error...:\ BTW: are you sure it's the Jag in Chinese sleep Chant. It sounds more like the Jazzmaster to my ear (warm and mellow-ish), but I could very well be wrong on that as well...
  4. "blah...stupid Les Pauls....over-rated" That's a matter of opinion (and to some extent I agree with you, being a mostly fender player myself.) However, I am not sure what you mean here, All I said was that Jon recorded the bulk of the new album on one (which is fact) and that would account for heavier sustain in the newer tracks (also fact). I never said this was good or bad. I was only commenting on why the new material sounded different than the old...
  5. From what I could see in the clips from Jimmy Kimmel, his effects switching box is a lot bigger this go around (it is now next to the rest of his pedals as opposed to it's former position underneath). It looks about twice as big, which supports the theory that he has a lot of new MIDI gear. I also saw a still capture from that broadcast that shows about two pedals (rather blury) in the corner of the screen, but have misplaced it, will try to find it... As for the heavier distortion, I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that he recorded (and presumably will play live) much of the new material on a les paul, which lends itself naturally to heavy distortion and sustain...
  6. My band is attempting a cover of Sparks for an upcoming gig, and despite spending a ton of time fiddling with effects, I can't seem to get the mellow vibe of the electric guitar line. Short of buying a vintage Jazzmaster (which sadly is not in the cards for me), anyone have any ideas for effects etc? I have a reissue tele thinline and a reissue Strat and neither seems mellow enough no matter what I run them through (note that I'm not trying to get the exact coldplay sound here per se, just trying to find something close, but nothing sounds anything like jazzmaster pups:veryangry2:...)
  7. I have a few questions regarding Jon's Twisted Logic Tour Rig. If anyone has any info on these questions please post: -was his Jag fully retired from live use or just not used for yellow? Did he use it on the (few) concerts where Shiver was played. -Did he add a Fender Blues Jr to his amp setup as some sources claim?
  8. Nice kit!:D
  9. "Anyway you do'nt have to find the sound in the guitars" I agree. I was Just Curious as to whether the Ric had been retired. Speaking of Yellow, do you know if Jon used the Jag for the few performances of Shiver on the Twisted Logic Tour, or has that guitar been retired as well?
  10. Can anyone shed any light on the process of adding a pickup to an acoustic guitar that is not already an electric/acoustic? I know many professional players do this, and I'd like to get a pickup installed on my hummingbird, but don't know much of anything about what getting such a mod done entails.
  11. In this video from the 2007 south american tour, Am I correct in my observation that Jonny is playing daylight on his walnut thinline (that he uses for most slide work) as opposed to the 12 string he used on the ROBTTH tour?
  12. I'm thinking he changes them out frequently too. In some clips you can clearly see him playing the brady snare (it has a different finish from the rest of the kit) yet in others he seems to be playing a snare in an identical (or at least similar) finish to his other drums.
  13. I know this thread has been inactive for a long time, but I must say I don't see how this can be Will's correct setup. He clearly doesn't have three snares in his current kit. Unless, that's a list of snares he's used in the past...
  14. The U.S. Edition of NME HAS NOT included any of the free promo discs released in the past (at least not any of the issues I've bought). Importing a U.K. copy may be your best bet.
  15. I found that my songwriting improved when I began to impose an amount of structure on my process. Before, I just kind of sat and let thoughts come out of me, thus everything sort of came apart after a certain point. I started looking at my songs in smaller pieces and analysing each section/part in detail on it's own, then fit that finished piece back into the overall structure. Not sure if this makes any sense:rolleyes4: Hope I could be of some help...
  16. I could not really see how it would make a difference either (except as you say due to the natural tone of the guitar), but I've heard a few people say things... Since I know next to nothing about E-bows, just thought I'd see if anyone has more experience than me;)
  17. Do E-bows work more or less equally well with all guitars? I am considering getting one to experiment with, but my guitar is a hollowbody (Epiphone Casino) and I've heard some say e-bows don't really work with this type of guitar. I really don't want to lay out the cash for one if it is just going to sound s#$%&y with my guitar...
  18. I heard somewhere that Jon recorded most of AROBTTH on his ES-335. Does anyone know if this is true? Most of the tracks on the finished record sound like the tone he gets out of his thinlines, and he doesn't seem to use the 335 often live, so I kind of doubt this...
  19. It's not so much getting to the tuning I have issues with, as it is figuring out which tuning I should use for a given song. That said, my guitar does suck!
  20. I kind of suck at hammer ons, so for me it's probably best to go ahead and re-tune the guitar.
  21. That simplifies things. I have a terrible ear for tunings. (that's called being a s^%#$y musician...)
  22. That's what makes it so d$#n difficult to figure out their tunings.:veryangry: (well that and Jon's habit of constantly swapping his thinlines so you can't even judge based on what a given guitar is tuned to...) -sigh-
  23. Trouble is played in drop-D, correct? (sorry to bombard the board with tuning questions:embarassed:, but I'm working out some CP covers...)
  24. I will try it that way and see if I can perhaps get it... Thanks as always for taking the time to tab that out...
  25. Most of the backtracks are simply used for the ambient layering effect heard in the bacground of some songs. Will triggers most of these with a foot pedal next to his hi-hat stand/pedal. You can clearly see him do this in videoclips.
