Most of the common audio formats (like MP3) use lossy codecs (like LAME). They are not faithful reproductions of the original audio, because they remove parts of the audio in order to reduce the filesize, which ends up being 40% to 10% of the original uncompressed audio file. Lossless codecs (like FLAC) reduce the filesize in up to 50% without losing any quality.

I dare you to post this message on HydrogenAudio.org :P And yep, I'm an audiophile, I currently have 93.6GB of music, 91% of it in lossless formats.
