Mew
Zookeeper's Boy Am I Wry? No Introducing Palace Players in that order. Seriously, some guy came in here once all cocky, he was all what's soooo great about this Mew band then? c'mon amaze me. I told him to listen to Zookeepers and work it out for himself. His reaction was "Wow!" :smug: :laugh3: Just ignore the bonkers lyrics in Zookeepers and you'll be fine. And yeah, the intro to IPP is supposed to sound that screwed up, it's all part of their charm ;)

The 7th Mixtape Exchange (1ST POST UPDATE)
OKAY, my review is here: (sorry, it's a bit short, I have a cold and I wanna go to bed soon) Track 1 - This is nice, I like this one. Nice intro, has a kind of Kings of Leon feel about it in the beginning then the distorted guitar reminds me of The Black Keys. Sounds American. Not quite sure on the guy's vocal, it doesn't quite suit the song enough, it'd be better with a stronger vocal. This is a good track tho, I'd be interested to hear more from this band. Track 2 - Interesting beginning, nice sound-bite there. Track kicks off with a good beat, sounding fun and playful. Almost a muted vocal tho, bit dreary but quite nice, the contrast works well. Track 3 - Another decent track, nothing out of the ordinary but it is nice. Foot-tapping. Track 4 - Good start, funky bassline, raw and dirty guitar. Musically I really like this, but the vocals I don't like. It's that semi-punk style vocal, kind of like the Wombats/Futureheads, that sort of angry/punctuated vocal that I don't much care for. Towards the end it sounds almost the same as a track by The Wonder Stuff called Good Night Though from 1989 (the "goodbye, goodbye, goodbye" bit). So I'd be interested to know how old your track is. Track 5 - Better vocals, sounds a bit like James Dean Bradfield. Quite a laidback sort of track, kinda sleepy. Like it. Track 6 - Pace picks up a little now. This is what Yeasayer would sound like if they went all rocky. That synth-ey distorted guitar rhythm reminds me of O.N.E. by yeasayer. I like this, especially when the guitar really kicks off and goes a bit mental and quite grungey. Track 7 - Ooooh this is sweet. I love the steel/country guitar on this, reminds me of an artist I like called Neville Skelly, he writes tracks like this, with a slight country/folk edge to it. I'm interested to know who this is. Track 8 - Instrumental. Quite nice & atmospheric , makes a nice little interlude but I kept expecting it to go somewhere or do something but it never actually did. Reminds me of an Apparatjik track, Frozen Fingers. Track 9 - Slow start and I'm thinking "oh ok, another instrumental, hmmm" then the vocal pops up, I like this track, it's an epic long one at 10 mins but one that builds well. It's just that coming so close after the other long one of #6 makes it seem a little like overkill. Out of the two, I prefer number 6 but this one is good too. I like the piano and the way that the guitar builds, but it's a couple of minutes too long, temptingly skippable. Track 10 - Ooooh this is different. Finger clicks, vocal harmonies, this is sweet. Reminds me of a Scottish band I got into recently, Kassidy, they do a lot of the harmonies like this. Again, I'd be interested to hear more from these. Overall, the mix has a great flow, you did well with the ordering. A small criticism would be the similarity of quite a lot of the tracks; there's plenty of bits that I really liked but not one whole song that stood out and made me go "Wow". But on the other hand, I liked all the tracks (I just didn't fall in love with any of them, sorry, apart from maybe Track 7 now that I've played it over a few more times). I didn't recognise anything, nor was I spoilered either, which is always a good thing :) Highlights: Track 1, the last 2 mins of Track 6, Track 7, Track 10 And nice artwork btw :D Thanks for the tape, I look forward to seeing the tracklist and finding out who you are

The 7th Mixtape Exchange (1ST POST UPDATE)
Yeah, I know about the search thingie, but I wanted to read some of the other reviews too. Thanks for the advice tho. Anyway, turns out mine was one of the tapes that's been passed on to someone else, which is a shame as some song choices were made specifically for the original receiver. Hope my new partner likes it anyway.

Biffy Clyro VS. The X Factor
Their current record co is part owned by Cowell, and I believe it was the rec comp's decision to allow the cover. Bastards. (j/k)

Biffy Clyro VS. The X Factor
Oh I absolutely agree in some cases, yes, a singer could get just as emotionally involved in music/lyrics written by someone else. But the importance thing, well, that's all objective, isn't it? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all, or rather in the ear, in this case. Song A is only more important than song B, to a person if that person feels the passion and the emotion in that song more than the other one, regardless of the genre or the crediblity of the song. Doubtless, people are moved by Britney Spears songs, personally I can't understand why but that's just me, but to say her songs (for example) are 'less important' than someone else's, I dunno, I guess that seems a bit harsh but for me it does feel as though her songs would be lacking in credibility or feeling or truth. But then I would say 95% of the music I listen to & enjoy is written by the band/artist themselves, so I'm probs not very objective on that. Anyway, going waaay off topic here, so yeah MON THE BIFF!

Biffy Clyro VS. The X Factor
I think you misunderstanding me, I didn't say all artists who don't write their own music don't deserve a place in the music industry, I was just highlighting that these two things are at opposite ends of the scale, and that bringing the two together isn't always such a good thing. Persoanlly, I don't have that big an issue with the x factor or pop music in general, I'd rather the x factor winners were given an original song to sing as their first single, why can't the powers that be commision a good, home-grown, pop songwriter to write the winning song especially for the winner, rather than churn out mediocre covers. I felt the same way about the Hallelujah song a few years back, covering these things in the show itself is one thing, but for the winning single (which will sell well anyway) why not pick something new? And it's jus tmy opinion and all this has made an interesting debate, there's no need to be insulting. Oh and lots of people give a shit about bands that write their own music, it's not absolutely necessary to a good song, I agree, but it does mean that a song means something really deep and personal to the band that play it, and that's important to lots of people, which is why guitar bands do so well.

Biffy Clyro VS. The X Factor
Yeah the original track's called Many of Horror (When We Collide). Guess it's makes it easier for for ppl to refer to the two tracks now. Many of Horror = good, When We Collide = not so good

Biffy Clyro VS. The X Factor
@Aurélie Ta :D This makes interesting reading - a long-term Biffy fan's take on the situation. There ya go, not Christassy enough  Jeeez... Anyway I think it's sad that some fans are calling them sellouts, especially considering that it was essentially out of their hands. But on the other hand it probably will help them achieve a wider audience. Hopefully some of the more intelligent x factor fans will go seek out the original and buy OR

Biffy Clyro VS. The X Factor
Ok I should have said in my humble opinion Biffy have no place on x factor, tho if Biffy themselves don't mind it, then who are we to complain? It's just that (imo) Biffy represent something that's the complete and utter opposite of shows like that, where all someone has to do is look a bit pretty, have a good singing voice and wait in line for an audition and then keep coming back. I'm not knocking what the contestants have to go thru, I know I couldn't do it, but on the other end of the scale you have bands like Biffy Clyro who have worked their arses off for several years, writing albums, playing gig after gig after gig and slowly building a following and they've done it whilst maintaining their originality and uniqueness and not selling out to the man. As I read in an article recently, the mainstream came to Biffy, not the other way round, and I applaud them for that. I just think this is a little too much mainstream
-
Biffy Clyro
If you'd read that article you'd have seen that he was actually being quite tolerant of xfactor and shows like that, he wasn't slagging it off. That said, it's not a threat to real music at all, cos the x factor is a singing contest, full stop, it isn't a songwriting or performing competition, so in essence whatever they churn out from these shows isn't on the same level as a band like Biffy that write, play and record their own stuff.
-
Biffy Clyro VS. The X Factor
It's not about pop vs. real music, it's about the fact that Biffy have no place on the bleedin' xfactor. We'd be just as pissed if Glee did a Biffy episode (oh god, heaven forbid) ;) Oh and I bought Many of Horror again (twice, actually, just for the fun of it)
-
Biffy Clyro
Who's a knob? I hope you're talking about Simon Cowell and not Simon Neil from that nme article: :laugh3:nice one, Si
