New Coldplay eh?
Didn't they seem like costumes...? Those coloured bomber jackets covered in patches? It looks that they've been sitting around the Bakery sewing again, like last time :\ I just assumed they'd be wearing them permanently now for the next 2 years....hopefully I'm wrong

New Coldplay eh?
I'm interested to hear the new stuff. The lyrics are unbelievably shite tho, I'm not impressed there at all. I don't mind the artwork and stuff, seems fresh and fun, kind of continuing and improving on some of the home-made, grafiti-type feel of some of the Viva artworks. The new 'costumes' for want of a better word bother me; while their new look is alright, I just wish they wouldn't bother with all the dressing up and stuff. It makes it all a bit gimmicky. It's just all a little frustrating, I mean they know Coldplay fans get a lot of stick an' all for being Coldplay fans, yet they don't make it any easier for us do they?

The 9th Mixtape Exchange
ARRRGGHH iTunes files in my mixtape! :bigcry: I hate iTunes :snobby: Sorry, I just had to rant. I'm ok now :P btw, mixtape maker, I converted them to mp3 and now there's two Track 15s. I'll find a way to distinguish between them when I review, which won't be today, maybe tomorrow or Thursday. I've got a lot on this week :)

Oh I love The Chair, great performance. There's a video on nme from the recording of She's Thunderstorms, and watching that I thought the exact same thing. Bit too much leather there, Alex haha Also, is it just me or has his accent really changed since The Shadow Puppets era..?? He used to be right Northern ;) [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsniqw4zNSs]YouTube - Studio Interview - Arctic Monkeys - Suck It and See[/ame]

Songs you like by artists you dislike
Anything off Definately Maybe and The Bends. It's not that I dislike Oasis or Radiohead as such, but I'm not particularly a fan of either band, apart from those two albums. I adore The Bends, but have very little desire to listen to anything else by RH :\

Arctic Monkeys!
I've actually surprised myself with how much I like this album. I can't stop playing it  Already I must have played it more times than all the other AM albums put together haha

Arctic Monkeys!
Listening now. I've never been much of an AM fan, but I've liked some of their singles in the past & I was reading the Q feature on Suck it and See which was quite complimentary so I thought it might be worth a listen. I'm quite impressed so far, more so than with any of their other albums. I like the fact it's quite guitar heavy. I'd heard Brick by Brick was supposed to be a bit of a Marmite song ;) but I really like it, it's a bit nuts. Don't Sit Down, I liked already, having heard it on the radio a few times. And I had no idea they'd done Piledriver Waltz, I love the Alex version of that song off the Submarine soundtrack so hearing it with a full band is weird, but good. Other than that, I rather like Black Treacle. And the title track is nice. A downside would be that a lot of it sounds a bit same-y I guess and Alex's vocal gets a bit depressing after a while, cos he doesn't tend to put much variety in it. Overall, I like it tho dunno if it'll be a 'keeper' yet. I have to say tho Colour of The Trap > Suck it And See imo :P

Miles Kane
Yeah go for it, there's no shame in going alone :D Loads of people do it Anyway, what do we all think of My Fantasy with Noel's backing vocals? I think it's a cracking little tune, Noel's almost unrecognisable on it tho but that makes it quite understated but still really effective. I had thought there was a female backing singer in there too, but apparently not, it's all Noel. I like

Miles Kane
S'probably cos of all the fags he smokes  My cd came today  I've already been listening to the album via Spotify all week tho so I kind of know it inside out. I think the title track is my fave at the moment. Pretty sexy looking cd cover too :sneaky:

There's a free download of a live version of My Fantasy on [ame=http://www.amazon.co.uk/My-Fantasy-Live-RAK-Studios/dp/B004UDUD5U/ref=dm_att_trk1]amazon's uk site[/ame] at the moment, dunno if it'll work for anyone outside the uk, but it's worth a go. It's a good song, he sounds exactly like John Lennon on it I think

I swear I had a coat just like that for school when I was like 7 or something, with woolly mittens and a satchel. Bless 'im, he just doesn't give a fuck, does he? :laugh3: Although the Justin Bieber fringe sweep has to go, it's freakin' awful. Even going back to the quiff would be an improvement.

Hey Noemie, thanks for the vm about this thread :D I'm really looking forward to the album, Q reviewed it this month and gave it 4/5 stars. Apparently every song sounds like a radio-friendly single, they say Quicksand and Happenstance are the best songs on the album

The Free Downloads Thread
Great thread. Fierce Panda are giving away a 6-track free ep in honour of their 17th birthday, in exchange for your email address. The used to be Coldplay's label y'know, back in the beginning, so there's a funny little number on there called Brothers & Sisters ;) There's also a track by Keane  AND four lovely album tracks by my personal favourites Goldheart Assembly and The Crookes :D The tracks are: Chorus of Fools ~ The Crookes By The Seine ~ The Crookes The Way You Want It ~ Keane Last Decade ~ Goldheart Assembly King of Rome ~ Goldheart Assembly Brothers and Sisters ~ Coldplay

 Get on it, girl O M G massive facepalm. Can't believe I missed all those Coldplay bits :shame: I am a big fan, just not very observant obviously :embarrassed:  In my defence I haven't listened to them much these past 2 years, but still...shit...it's no excuse really. And yeah, my username came from the song square one originally, so yeah can't believe I missed that one... what a muppet :laugh3: Gnossienne, that was the fella! yup, very similar pieces. Ooooh Belle & Sebastian eh? My brother's a big fan of them, I've not heard a lot of their stuff before tho, so yeah, they're umm... different haha Your mix was very summery indeed & very happy & optimistic sounding  You've made me think I should probably give The Suburbs another chance and give it a proper listen again. Maybes I'll stick it back on my mp3 player... ..oh and the National too, I have High Violet but pretty much only ever listen to Conversation 16 or whatever that track is called, I bloody love that song, so yeah p'rhaps I should check out some of their older stuff. Do you have any recommendations on where to start..?? Anyway, thanks for the cool tape and for the tracklist. :smug2: Glad you approve

The 8th Mixtape Exchange (Links in first post)
Side A: I picked this song specifically for it's intro so I'm glad you spotted that. I could have chosen anything off this album tbh as it's all good. They're called Hey Rosetta!, a Canadian six-piece that specialise in this sort of high energy rock with strings, brass, everything really. I guess it is quite easy going, I'd not thought of it like that before. I really like this song for the lyrics "It's not that I don't trust her, it's just her cups of tea, I think she's messing round, I think it's L.S.D" haha The song's about him tripping after someone's spiked his cuppa. A slightly old school Liverpool band called Shack This was picked for the Apparatjik connection. I like this song, it's nice and upbeat but there's others on the album that I like better. The album is quite a mixed bag, it's not all this electronic. This is Andy Burrows, Razorlight's old drummer, who has since gone solo under the name I Am Arrows. He played everything on the album himself apparently. It's impressive stuff. Aw I'm glad you like this one, it's one of my fave songs at the moment. This is Kassidy, a fairly new Scottish guitar band. Quite literally "guitar band" as in there's four of 'em and they all play guitar. They have epic beards too, I dunno why that's relevant. If you liked this, you should check out their debut album, Hope St, it's very very good. I'm in love with this guy at the moment, musically speaking. I'd not thought of him sounding like Guy Garvey tho, I guess he does a bit. I worried that you'd find it a bit dull and over-long, but I saw this guy at a festival last summer not knowing anything about him and came away with this song in my head, so it must have struck a chord with me somewhere. This guy is called Steve Mason, he used to be in a band called The Beta Band (in fact I used one their songs too, Track 10) The Crookes. Another fairly new band. I think they're from Sheffield or somewhere like that. They do this really 50/60s inspired rock really well but they also sound a bit like The Smiths. I've seen them live twice now, and they are really energetic. I love the lyrics in this track. hehe Yeah, I needed a little short bit of quiet to close Side A and make the opener of Side B really stand out.... I guess it did the trick ;) This is one of Mew's intermezzos off No More Stories Side B: haha Bit mental huh? This is a collaboration by Paloma Faith, Graham Coxon from Blur and Bill Ryder-Jones, The Coral's old guitarist and it was written specially for Converse, like an advertising campaign thingie. It is rather dirty/kinky, I love it. Free download too. Actually it's not a girl, it's Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys, going solo to soundtrack a movie called Submarine. I'm not a big Arctic Monkeys fan, but I do like the Last Shadow Puppets so I got this ep on a whim really. This is the best song on it. I really like the lyrics "Something in your magnetism must have pissed them off" He has a great way with words. Yeah, Steve Mason again but it's The Beta Band this time from 2004. They were a very experimental band and did like to play around with rhythm and timestops and stuff. Again, it's the lyrics that get me on this track, they are very evocative. "I try to do my own thing, but the trouble with your own thing is you end up on your own" I was looking for something subdued and picked this kind of last minute. It's a band called Marmaduke Duke, the side project of Simon from Biffy Clyro. A little dull yes, but I just love his voice. It's pure sex. Beautiful song, very haunting. It's the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and a lot of their stuff is a lot more Oasis-sounding, but this is far superior to the rest of it. I dunno who the girl is :\ The Coral. Just the best band ever to walk the face of the planet. I'm a tiny wee bit obsessed with them ;) I picked this one cos the dual vocals sound lovely together - James, the main singer, has a voice that's quite rough and gravelly and Lee is more melodic. Melancholic but beautiful, but all thier stuff is different, they're the most diverse and varied band that I know, I can't praise them enough. The latest single from another of my fave bands, Goldheart Assembly. It's really pretty with the harp and everything. This one's a free download too. Phew. Thanks for reviewing so quickly, I'll be offline for the weekend so I was really hoping you'd post before then  Thnkas for enjoying it so much :) Tracklist: title - artist (year) album "it's a Tuesday night" Side A: 1 - New Sum (Nous Sommes) - Hey Rosetta! The 8th Mixtape Exchange (Links in first post)
Ok, gonna post my review now, I wouldn't normally review so quick as I like to take a few days to listen but I think I'll be offline over the Easter weekend and I want to get the tracklist back before then :) First off, to whoever made this tape, I'd like to say thanks for renaming everything properly; I think this is the first mixtape I've received where I've not been spoilered by accidently catching a glimpse of the odd artist name or artwork as I've unzipped it. I've listened to this completeyl 'blind' and spoiler free, so thanks for that. I know it's petty, but it is much more fun when you don't get spoiled imo. Cute little artwork btw. 1 - Nice little classical track. Reminds me of Postcards From Far Away or that other little piano piece that Chris played sometimes on the Viva tours, I forget the name. I'm not much into classical music, can you tell? ;) Not something I'd choose to listen to, but it's lovely tho, quite cute and soothing. 2 - The guy's vocal is a bit drone-y and sounds bit familiar but I have no idea why. The track is nice, I like the acoustic guitar and the strings. I like it when the piano comes in cos it needs that change to stop it being too dull. I like the lyrics. It reminds me of The National, but I dunno why cos I don't know them all that well :\ 3 - Short track, almost missed it. Nondescript little instumental piece, pretty but nothing interesting to say about it 4 - I like the beginning to this, I was in need of some electric guitar. I like the lyrics in this, they're interesting. There's elements of Mumford and sons and Snow Patrol in here, but in a good way. It's good this, I like. 5 - Arcade Fire? Must be. I do like Win Butler's vocal style, he's very soothing. I'm gonna guess this is off the new album. I have listened to it a couple of times, but I couldn't put names to tracks, if you know what I mean. This is one of their nicer songs, I quite like this one, not as dull as some of their other stuff. I like the way it fades out. 6 - Nice beginning, another instrumental perhaps? Oh ok, horns now...bit odd. Now the singing comes in; he loves his dog and his pussy cat...ummm o-kay that's nice for him. This is weird. Now it's all gone a bit 1920's tea dance, should I start doing the charleston? Not my cup of tea this, it's too bizarre, but bold choice, I applaud your adventurism. 7 - Another short interlude. Again sweet, but not very exciting. 8 - Acoustic again, starts a little dull but then it picks up. Progresses well, I like the handclaps about 3/4 of the way thru and then when it proper rocks out at the end. It's alright, this one, I've got nothing bad to say about it, but it's not really great either. 9 - Synths now, nice change. Not a big fan of the generic drum machine beat, but it works I guess. Vocalist reminds me of Jonas Bjerre or the Owl City fella. I like the electric guitar in this, but it's a bit subdued overall, it could do with being more....well, just more. 10 - Oooooooh I love this song & love this version too. I'm pretty sure I heard this one before I heard the original. In fact this might well be the reason why I went out and bought the Bends. I know Thom Yorke hates this song (their version, tho he prob hates this one too, the miserable bastard), but I love it, so screw him. haha. The vocal is beautiful on this and the piano as well, it's a good example of a really good cover, cos it's more of an reinterpretation than a straighforward cover. Good choice. High & Dry - Jamie Cullum 11 - Girl singer. Decent vocal, I often find female vocalist quite annoying, but this is alright. I like the lyrics; "I'll be the one to break my heart" ...hmm know how she feels. This is sweet & kooky - I can almost hear the Kate Bush influence. 12 - Another acoustic-y one. S'ok, this one. Again I like the handclaps, makes it more interesting than it otherwise could be. The vocal and the lyrics are a bit uninspiring tho. I like the bit at the end, is it meant to be a part of this song, cos it sounds nothing like the rest of it. It mirrors the first track, sounding a bit Coldplay-like so it bookends the mixtape rather nicely. Overall, a nice/good tape. The tracks all worked well together and had a good flow. There wasn't anything I hated, which is always a good thing. But it was somewhat all of a muchness tho, some of the tracks were a bit too similar in style for anything to really stand out for me. I really found myself craving a bit of dirty electric guitar or something that felt like it had a little bit of energy to it. But that's probably just my tastes. This mix would make a good chillout tape, something to lie out in the sun with on a summer's day :) Good job 7.5/10
