Israel used uranium bombs in Lebanon Al Jazeera / Tehran Times | October 31, 2006 UK’s The Independent published a report on Saturday accusing Israeli forces of dropping uranium-enriched phosphorous bombs on Lebanon during the recent war that came to an end with the issuance of UN Resolution 1701 that demanded warring parties to ceasefire. "We know that they drenched southern Lebanon with cluster bombs in the last 72 hours of the war, leaving tens of thousands of bomblets which are still killing Lebanese civilians every week," The Independent said in its report. "And we now know -- after it first categorically denied using such munitions -- that the Israeli army also used phosphorous bombs, weapons which are supposed to be restricted under the third protocol of the Geneva Conventions, which neither Israel nor the United States have signed," the article said. According to the report, Dr. Chris Busby, the British Scientific Secretary of the European Committee on Radiation Risk, said laboratory tests of soil taken from bomb craters in the southern Lebanese towns of Khiam and At-Tiri, near Nabatiye, suggest that bombs containing Uranium had been used. Dr Busby added that there are two reasons for the contamination; "The first is that the weapon was some novel small experimental nuclear fission device or other experimental weapon (eg, a thermobaric weapon) based on the high temperature of a uranium oxidation flash." "The second is that the weapon was a bunker-busting conventional uranium penetrator weapon employing enriched uranium rather than depleted uranium." Image of the explosion of the first bomb showed huge clouds of black smoke that might result from burning uranium. "When a uranium penetrator hits a hard target, the particles of the explosion are very long-lived in the environment… They spread over long distances. They can be inhaled into the lungs. “The military really seem to believe that this stuff is not as dangerous as it is," Dr. Busby added. Israeli military claims it will investigate the report allegations. Israel’s brutal military campaign against Lebanon, that ended last August, killed over 1,400 civilians, about one third of whom are children, and inflicted serious damages to the country’s infrastructure. The head of the country’s Council for Development and Reconstruction, Fadl Shalak, said on 16 August that the damage that resulted from Israel’s bombardment to Lebanon amounted to U.S. $3.5 billion: U.S. $2 billion for buildings and U.S. $1.5 billion for infrastructure such as bridges, roads and power plants. Numerous humanitarian groups and human rights activists have been warning about the devastating impact of cluster munitions Israel is believed to have used during its recent invasion of Lebanon. According to a report prepared by Landmine Action and released earlier this month, 60 percent of Israeli cluster strikes hit built-up areas during the 35-day war in Lebanon. "In the final three days, three times as many Israeli rockets, shells and bombs were fired per day," the report said, resulting in between 2 and 3 civilians still being killed or injured by cluster munitions every day. "Every day women and children are killed or injured as they sift through the rubble of their former homes by cluster munitions that failed to go off when they should have," said Landmine Action Director Simon Conway. "The claim that these faulty weapons can be used in a precise or surgical way is a lie. The evidence is there to see littering the ruined houses and olive groves of southern Lebanon," Conway added. Iran calls adventurous a U.S.-led nuclear interception navy exercise in the Gulf AP | October 29 2006 DOHA, Qatar A naval training exercise led by the United States and aimed at blocking smuggling of nuclear weapons began Sunday in the Persian Gulf, the first of its kind since North Korea's nuclear test and the renewed U.S. drive for sanctions against Iran. Iran called the two-day maneuvers "adventurist," but the Foreign Ministry said Tehran's response would be "rational and wise." "We are watching their movements very carefully," Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said, adding that the exercises would not improve security in the Gulf, through which about 20 percent of the world's oil transits. The maneuvers were taking place under the US-led Proliferation Security Initiative, designed to counter trafficking in weapons of mass destruction, their delivery systems and related materials "to and from states and non-state actors of proliferation concern around the world," the U.S. Navy said. Two previous exercises have taken place in the region under the 75-nation initiative, among two dozen worldwide since such exercises began in 2003. It is the first such drill since North Korea's Oct. 9 nuclear test. Observers believe the PSI program could be used to halt North Korean weapons traffic in accordance with U.N. sanctions. South Korea, which has balked at joining the initiative, sent an observer delegation to the Gulf but declined to participate. "We have not (fully) participated in the PSI because there is a high possibility of armed clashes if the PSI is carried out in waters around the Korean peninsula," Vice Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan told Parliament Friday. The exercise comes as the United States is seeking support for U.N. sanctions against Iran for its nuclear program. On Friday, Iran stepped up its uranium enrichment program in defiance of international demands. Late Sunday, Iranian state television quoted the country's navy chief, Admiral Sajjad Kouchaki, as saying the presence of American warships in the Gulf "indicates the hostile nature of the U.S. policy" and that Iran "is completely ready to confront any possible threat." However, state television played down the exercise, saying the United States "wanted to exaggerate this small but exhibitionist maneuver." It noted that naval maneuvers had been held "many times in the past." A U.S. Coast Guard cutter is the only American ship among the nine vessels taking part in the exercise, code-named "Leading Edge." The ships are being commanded at sea from an Italian navy frigate, according to Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Brown, spokesman for the Bahrain-based U.S. Fifth Fleet. The training occurred as coalition naval forces in the Gulf were on heightened watch for possible terror threats to oil facilities in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Sunday's training scenario focused on surveillance, with teams in 16 countries tracking a ship suspected of carrying outlawed weapons components, Brown said. A British Royal Navy tanker played the role of the suspected weapons carrier. He declined to describe the surveillance technology being used. On Monday, naval forces on eight other vessels are expected to stop, board and search the suspect ship, Brown said. No ammunition or blanks are due to be fired during the mock chase. Countries taking part include Italy, France, Australia, United States and Britain, with one ship each, and Bahrain with three naval vessels. In 2003, U.S. warships intercepted a German-owned ship, the BBC China, bound for Libya with Pakistani-designed uranium centrifuge parts. Among them were halted two WMD-related headed for North Korea and ballistic missiles and nuclear-related components steaming for Iran. But in 2002, an attempted seizure failed. A Spanish warship intercepted a North Korean-crewed freighter carrying Scud missiles to Yemen. This superhighway would connect Mexico, the United States, and Canada, cutting a wide swath through the middle of Texas and up through Kansas City. Offshoots would connect the main artery to the west coast, Florida, and northeast. Proponents envision a ten-lane colossus the width of several football fields, with freight and rail lines, fiber-optic cable lines, and oil and natural gas pipelines running alongside. This will require coordinated federal and state eminent domain actions on an unprecedented scale, as literally millions of people and businesses could be displaced. The loss of whole communities is almost certain, as planners cannot wind the highway around every quaint town, historic building, or senior citizen apartment for thousands of miles. Governor Perry is a supporter of the superhighway project, and Congress has provided small amounts of money to study the proposal. Since this money was just one item in an enormous transportation appropriations bill, however, most members of Congress were not aware of it. The proposed highway is part of a broader plan advanced by a quasi-government organization called the “Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America,” or SPP. The SPP was first launched in 2005 by the heads of state of Canada, Mexico, and the United States at a summit in Waco. The SPP was not created by a treaty between the nations involved, nor was Congress involved in any way. Instead, the SPP is an unholy alliance of foreign consortiums and officials from several governments. One principal player is a Spanish construction company, which plans to build the highway and operate it as a toll road. Instead, a handful of elites use their government connections to bypass national legislatures and ignore our Constitution – which expressly grants Congress the sole authority to regulate international trade. The ultimate goal is not simply a superhighway, but an integrated North American Union – complete with a currency, a cross-national bureaucracy, and virtually borderless travel within the Union. Like the European Union, a North American Union would represent another step toward the abolition of national sovereignty altogether. A new resolution, introduced by Representative Virgil Goode of Virginia, expresses the sense of Congress that the United States should not engage in the construction of a NAFTA superhighway, or enter into any agreement that advances the concept of a North American Union. I wholeheartedly support this legislation, and predict that the superhighway will become a sleeper issue in the 2008 election. Any movement toward a North American Union diminishes the ability of average Americans to influence the laws under which they must live. The SPP agreement, including the plan for a major transnational superhighway through Texas, is moving forward without congressional oversight – and that is an outrage. The administration needs a strong message from Congress that the American people will not tolerate backroom deals that threaten our sovereignty.

Yeah, I remember a few cases from earlier in the year when students were suspended for some bizzare out of school activites. Whatever happened to parents dealing with out of school issues....at least to some degree. Also, I remember a case where a kid was to be suspended for not showing up for a vaccination...as the students parents did not want their child to have the jab. Then his parents were almost taken to court because of their childs absence. It was all due to the attendance being "mandatory". Although if I remember correctly I think the untold truth was that there is an "Immunization Exemption" information sheet which must be requested and parents weren't informed of this. But the kid was going to be suspended for that!?? crazy. There too were warnings at school, telling parents they could be arrested if the children weren't vaccinated.
