Alright. I'm going to post my review now. I was going to wait until the morning, but I got so caught up in making last-minute adjustments to what I wanted to say that I changed my mind and decided to do it before I go to bed.
My tape is titled “This Summer Ain’t So Bad.” It was interesting, as I imagined it to have more than 12 songs as I was downloading it due to the large file size. The majority of songs are at least 4 minutes long, and the total length of the tape is about an hour long. The album art is of a forest lit with some (Chinese?) lanterns.
I quickly realized as I was listening to this that the subtitles you gave each track are lyrics of the song that was actually playing. That’s so cheeky. :P The problem with this, however, is it can tempt people to cheat and use a search engine in order to find out what the songs are. I told myself not to do that, if only so I wouldn’t ruin the surprise for myself, but resistance was difficult.
1. “I Didn’t Cue for an Hour to Leave Straight Away…”
This starts with some chatting noises, which lead into synths. Then enter the electric drums with some “na na nas.” “East London’s not a bomb site. It is a treasure chest.” I can tell this is an English band from the accent of the vocalist. This seems to be reflective of one of my favorite types of music: British indie rock. “Shut up and move with me, move with me, or get out of my face.” It’s really a quite a fun song with great lyrics and an upbeat feel, which reflects the summery feel implied by your tape title. By the time I get to the last chorus of the song, I’m dancing and singing along. That’s always a good thing. “I never knew I was a techno fan.” This is an excellent choice for an opener.
(As a side note to my mixtape maker, based on your spelling of “queue” (which is the proper spelling of the word in question), I’ve come to the conclusion that you’re most certainly American.)
2. “So We’ll Dance to the Sound of the Sirens…”
I know this song! This is “Ares” by Bloc Party. It’s nice to know someone else at least somewhat appreciates “Intimacy.” (“Zephyrus,” my favorite Bloc Party song, is on that album.) The majority of people who listen to Bloc Party tend to think that album sucks compared to the others. I just think it’s a different sound. Anyway, it’s a nice follow up to the opening cut, so good job on that.
3. “Which Can Refresh Itself with Some Little Raindrops…”
Oh hello. It’s Iceland’s favorite post-rock band, Sigur Ros. This is their song “Hafsol.” It’s interesting to note that you went with the “Hvarf/Heim” version, as opposed to the one from “Von.” I imagine at least part of that had to do with the fact that the original “Von” version is almost 12 ½ minutes long, which is almost 3 minutes longer than this one. It’s an interesting shift to go from Bloc Party to Sigur Ros, but I’m quite fond of Sigur Ros, so obviously I’m not going to have a problem with this.
4. “Yet We’re Running Scared, Holding Knives…”
“Drip. Drip. Drip. Drip.” Or is it “trip?” I can’t tell. This song is guitar-driven and is much heavier than the previous track, which serves as a nice contrast. The vocalist reminds me vaguely of Scott Hutchison of Frightened Rabbit; the tone is similar, and I detect a Scottish accent. I’m guessing it’s safe to say this is a Scottish band. It’s a different band, though; this voice has a bit of gravel to it, it’s not as loud, and the accent isn’t quite as thick. I was attracted to the lyrics of this song as well, particularly the line, “You left my heart like an abandoned car.” I really like the heavy guitar break after the second chorus, right before the vocals come back in. I like the song quite a bit, and I’d like to know more about this band.
5. “So Tell a Killing Joke for Me…”
This has an electronic opening, which sounds harmless enough. Then, the vocals show up. Oh my, these vocals…what are they? It’s like the vocalist from Alt-J decided to suck helium, sing quieter, and collaborate with an electronic-based band. While I have changed my mind about Alt-J since I first posted about them on this forum (I caught myself dancing to “Fitzpleasure” one day while I was in Hastings), my biggest pet peeve surrounding them hasn’t: I still can’t understand the lyrics without having them in front of me and reading them. This is how I feel about this vocalist, too. I can’t understand much of what this singer is singing, either. I THINK I heard a bit in the beginning about empty sockets, but I can’t trust myself on this. On top of all these other complaints I’ve made already about the vocalist, this one is SO whiny. I’m sorry, but I can’t get into this one. It’s not you; it’s me. I told you I was picky with vocals, and I suppose this is an example of when this comes into play. The music part was actually fine, and if someone else were singing, I’d probably appreciate the song more.
6. “But Everything You Say Is Fire.”
“Run, whirlwind, run further and further away into the sun.” This sounds like a synthpop band based on the synths and artificial handclaps, although it’s not quite along the lines of something like Hot Chip. The vocals are pretty harmless, but they don’t really seem to go anywhere. OK, the guy sounds more annoying when he tries to sing the higher pitches; he sounds a bit like he’s wailing them instead of singing. In the part where they’re singing “everything you say is fire,” I started to detect some electronic noises that sounded a bit like buzzing and got on my nerves. Is it weird of me to say that the backing vocals sound better to me than the main ones? The other thing is that I honestly don’t understand why the last 1 ½ minutes is even there. It’s an extended ending that serves no purpose to the song. They should’ve ended on that last big chord and called it a day. This doesn’t bother me in the way the previous track does, but it’s not a particularly good song, either.
7. “Lately I Know that We’ve Been Fightin’…”
The very beginning sounds a bit like chip tunes from video games. This segues into some funky rhythms that I find quite catchy. This is another English band, from the sound of the accents. I’m guessing they’re more rustic English because the dialect is a bit more unrefined than the ones I’ve heard on this tape. In the chorus, the chip tune comes back, as well as some vocoder effects that Daft Punk is well known for. “Let’s work it out!” :D This is a cute, catchy little song that makes me smile as I listen to it. After the previous two tracks, I find this quite refreshing. I want to guess that this is a newer band or, at the very least, a song from an album that was recorded back when this band was new. The recording seems a bit lo-fi to me.
8. “In the End, All You Can Hope For…”
I knew right from the opening notes that this was an Editors song. This particular one happens to be “Bones,” which is from “An End Has a Start.” Some people say Editors are inspired by Interpol. I find that curious, as I like Editors more than I ever liked Interpol. Actually, this song reminds me that I haven’t taken the time to listen to the new Editors record, and I should probably make some time to do that in the near future. This is another fine choice.
9. “That You’ll Be There When I Climb into Eternity…”
This has some strumming acoustic guitar and some electric guitar with some effect on it that makes the feel sound slightly…Hawaiian? I can’t think of a better word. For some reason, the intro made me think of Beach House. “I waited through the darkest field you’d imagine, your pretty face sketched on the barrel of my gun…” These vocals fit the style of the song quite well, I think. They’re a bit unrefined, but they’re not too gravelly and overbearing. There’s just enough texture in his voice to keep this listening experience interesting. “I’ve been racing the clock, and I’ve run out of steam. I am ready for my final symphony.” The lyrics to this song really speak to me, and I think the impact is enhanced by how this man is singing them. The more I listen to this, the more beautiful I think it is. The strings in the background fit so nicely, too. The last minute grows into a climax, then tones down into a nice, subtle ending that I think this song really needed. I’m really fond of this song, and I can’t wait to see who this is.
10. “Holding Out Your Heart…”
There’s some guitar with some weird keyboard instrument of some sort that make this chaotic intro before the beginning of the song gets into gear with strumming guitar and a basic beat on drums. The vocalist isn’t bad, but he’s sorta nasally, which is a bit of a turn-off for me. I quite like the vocal harmonies going on, though. The guitar solo is annoying, with all the “waaaaaaaa” sounds that are going on. That doesn’t really cover the fact that, for a guitar solo, it was pretty unimaginative and didn’t really enhance the song in any way. Towards the end, there’s a keyboard countermelody that I like. It’s a shame the guitar insists on making random, noisy entrances and annoying me even more. It’s not a terrible song. It’s not even a bad song. There are things that could’ve been done to make this a bit better. I think even with the changes, though, I would’ve still found it a bit boring because the song didn’t really seem to go much of anywhere for me.
11. “So I’ll Find My Counterpoint…”
It took me a bit longer to place this song, but I eventually realized this is “Counterpoint” by Delphic. It’s from their debut album, “Acolyte,” which I liked quite a bit. I used “Submission” for a tape I made back in MTE 9. (As a random side note, I owe Eddie an apology for that particular tape, as I’m pretty sure that’s the worst one I’ve ever made…) It’s great that you placed this song after the previous one; I feel like the energy that was sucked from me by listening to Track 10 has been returned to me via this song. Thank you.
12. “And Look for the Sign in the Sky.”
“Well, how do I get a hold of you?” “You just contact the mayor’s office. He has a special signal that shines in the sky. It’s in the shape of a giant cock.” …Wait, WHAT? Hahahaha. Cue drums, strumming guitar, and some la-la-laing. This is shortly followed with some vocals that sound like they’re in complete gibberish. I’m laughing so hard at this. WHAT IS THIS I DON’T EVEN  Is this a punk band? That’s sort of the vibe I’m getting from this. Either way, this is easily the most entertaining closer I’ve heard, so you did great on that. Really, this song brings me so much joy.
Here’s my summary of this tape. I would’ve liked to have not had so many bands that I knew, but having them there showed me that you have at least somewhat similar taste to me, which I find reassuring. I might not have liked absolutely everything you put on here, but you certainly have put in some gems that have piqued my interest and make me want to know more about the bands you’ve shared with me. I enjoyed listening to it as a whole, so you should consider this tape a success. Thanks so much for making it for me! I can’t wait to hear what you have to say. :nice:
As a final note, I'd like to say that I think I have an idea of who you are. I'd make a guess, but I don't want to be unfair and spoil it, so I'll wait until you reveal yourself.
