Official MLB 2009 Thread!
^You don't have to remind me about last night's game...did you notice Rudy Giuliani was there too? I don't have any idea why he was there, but I have seen John Cusack at a bunch of Cubs games (not in person, but they always catch him on camera). John Belushi is at the game today, and Jeremy Piven is going to be there tomorrow to sing the stretch.

Banks make $38 billion a year from overdraft fees.
I'm not sure how other banks work, but I used to work for a bank, and it doesn't work exactly the way the article makes it sound. The posting order portion of the article is probably true - I never really paid that close attention to that part of the posting process. The way my bank (the one I used to work at) works is that if you start the business day (after the cutoff time, like was mentioned in the article) with a negative balance on your account, your debit card will be rejected no matter where you go (ATM, store, online, etc.). However, if you start the day with a positive balance, it is possible that your debit card transaction could be approved because the ATM/POS/debit card processor doesn't necessarily communicate live with the bank's system. Plus, if that network is down for whatever reason, your transactions could get approved in circumstances that they normally wouldn't. But I do know for a fact there are ways to prevent getting charged overdraft fees, like linking your checking account to another account to provide overdraft protection. You might get charged a transfer fee, but it should be measurably less than the overdraft fee ($5.00 vs $20.00 at my bank). And I also know that most overdrafts can be prevented by not spending beyond your means...overdraft fees can be a vicious cycle, and if you let it continue, you'll just get deeper and deeper into it. But banks do charge off accounts that are constantly overdrawn. So they're not ALL bad. They could keep collecting fees from those chronically overdrawn accounts, but after 3 months or so, they decide to get rid of the "bad accounts." And yes, these accounts are considered bad - banks can actually lose a lot of money from them, believe it or not; sometimes they never even get the deposit loss back, much less the fees on the account. This is all based on a community bank, though. I can't speak for the big ones like Chase and Bank of America.

That was awesome! Except that Youk got thrown to the ground like it was nothing. But one of the most entertaining fights I've seen in a while. Plus, the final outcome was awesome too, of course!:D

I'm going to chime in once and say, only once, that I HATE THE PHILLIES! Ok, now that I got that off my chest, I'm hoping Pedro's first start isn't a good one, for my own sanity. Or I at least hope that Samardjiza (I'm not even sure I spelled that right) pitches just a little better than Pedro, and that the Cubs' bullpen *cough*Marmol*cough* can keep it together at the end of the game.

Yay! Another Cubs fan! How crazy has this season been? I swear everytime someone is activated from the DL, someone else goes on it. But if Ramirez can avoid another DL stint I think they'll be OK, for the most part. They need Lilly back, and the good Z back. Plus, Bradley and Soriano need to start hitting again.

I'm getting worried about the Sox too. I'm thinking Smoltz might be better suited for the bullpen right now. Actually, when they signed him I thought immediately that he'd be better suited for the bullpen. I wonder if they signed Byrd again to take over Smoltz's spot in the rotation.

Yep...been there. It sucks. What's horrible too is you get a guy back and someone else gets injured and goes on the DL. Not that the Mets' situation has been any better, but the Cubs have had the Opening Day lineup together for a whole 2 games this season...it's so frustrating.

It was a stupid fluky thing too for Castillo to sprain his ankle. I saw the video, and was dumbfounded at how he sprained his ankle. That stinks though...the last thing the Mets need. It seems like something that should happen to a Cubs player. You've heard the list of weird Cubs injuries, right? Dempster breaking his toe jumping over the dugout railing...Kerry Wood hurting his back getting out of a hot tub...Bob Howry hurting his back moving his grill...the list goes on.

The official Coldplaying.com favourate Coldplay album! Vote Now
Love VLVODAAHF. The whole album is just so complete. Not one song feels out of place, and I never find myself skipping over certain songs. The other albums have one or two tracks I don't really care for. I'd have to say AROBTTH is second, then X&Y, then Parachutes.

I'm glad you had a great day. The Sox win was bittersweet for me because the Cubs bullpen blew up (well, actually just Kevin Gregg). :veryangry2: :veryangry2:

I don't know about Phillies vs. Red Sox...I'd be more interested in a Cubs vs. Red Sox world series.

Yeah, he seems to have a good head on his shoulders. Kind of similar to Derrek Lee, where he doesn't lose control very often in those situations (the one time I did see Lee blow up on Chris Young was pretty insane). Did you see that the Sox picked up Victor Martinez?! The Yankees better watch themselves!

I saw the highlights from that Phillies game...Utley was pretty pissed (although, I think anyone would be pissed if someone threw at their head). It almost seemed like he was contemplating walking toward the mound. I don't think he would've, but it looked like he thought about it. And it was good to see the team stand up for him and plunk a Giant. On a more positive note...the Cubs are back in first!!! I'm going to be the biggest Astros fan this weekend...here's hoping they pitch a lot better against the Cards than they did against the Cubs.

Oh, that should be a blast! That's an awesome park too. Had seats about 15 rows up from first base when I was there in '06. Have fun! My next game is in September when the Cubs play the Reds...in the middle of the division race. Should be fun.

Thanks for that link...there were a few great tidbits of information, but it still doesn't completely answer my question of where exactly the songs were recorded. I'm not sure that anyone other than the band really knows.

I fell in love with Fenway when I went there in 2005...great place to see a game, even though our seats were horrible (if we sat straight in our seats, we'd be looking directly into the bullpen. We had to crane our necks to see home plate). So basically the love for Fenway turned into a magnified interest in the Red Sox, and I've been a fan ever since. It also helps that I've never, ever liked the Yankees at all. And my name is Stephanie...nice to meet everyone.

Thanks for the welcome. Not necessarily looking forward to the possibility of Cliff Lee facing the Cubs again, but at least it will only be once in the regular season...I feel sorry for the Mets, Braves, and Marlins fans (I already feel sorry for Nationals fans because the team is no good).

Huge baseball fan here. Cubs all the way! Tied St. Louis for first place with a 12-0 win over the Astros! They've been pretty magical since the break. I'm hoping they'll be able to keep it up for the rest of the season, which is not completely out of the question. Soriano's hitting extremely well lately in the 6 hole, and Ramirez is back and a force to be reckoned with. Once Lilly and Soto come off the DL, they'll be set for the rest of the season. PS - I'm also a Red Sox fan; they're my AL team.
