Tupac Hologram Performs at Coachella 2012!
I agree that it could get out of hand if used extensively and in poor taste (making money off dead artists) and many of the examples you give are extremes. But you have to remember, this is not the first time it has been done. It's been done with Mariah Carey, and Madonna and Gorrilaz used it back in 2006. The technology has always been there, it depends how one uses it. I disagree with you calling it a gimmick though. If that's a gimmick, then Coldplay using Xylobands is just as much a gimmick. Both provide a way for the fans to connect to the performance. The 2 songs Tupac performed wasn't dragged out for the entire set nor was it done to promote or hype the set. It was done in good taste and Dre and Snoop's headline act was, according to reviews, the highlight of Coachella. Tupac Hologram Performs at Coachella 2012!
I thought it was pretty cool, a bit creepy, but cool nonetheless. The entire set was headlined by Dr. Dre and Snoop. It was about an hour-ish long and it had many guests come in a la Eminem, 50 Cent, Wiz, among others. It was their way of paying homage, the way I see it. Every concert that Snoop and Dre do, they always have a segment where they give respects to Pac. In this set, they paid tribute to both Nate Dogg (earlier in the set) and Pac. Also, something to keep in mind, anything Tupac-related on the set was approved by his mother, Afeni. She basically controls his estate, and if she gave the go-ahead, I'm cool with it. However I agree, that if they continue to do this with Tupac or any other rapper/singer etc, it could get out of hand and become distasteful. But, this was just a one-time treat for the fans and it was unexpected and pretty neat. The entire set was amazing, one of the best I've watched. (One thing that I noticed is that Dre never shared the stage with Tupac and this may have been deliberate as Tupac had a falling out with Dre) This is their tribute back in 2001's Up In Smoke Tour: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSV-QEGIENU]2Pac Tribute Dr.Dre feat. CB charts
Yeah, looks like CB's time is done (for now). Something I noticed, it's minor, but at least a positive for CB. On the US Billboard Charts for Alternative Songs this week, CB is #15. That's its peak charting position. http://www.billboard.com/charts/hot-100#/song/coldplay/charlie-brown/26110545

CB charts
For this week's UK Charts: Charlie Brown is out Paradise is #39 (just about out/at the borderline) (was #30 last week) MX is #17 (13 last week) It's now time for PoC.

Is it just me...
Yeah, I agree with you. If CB had been the second single and Paradise the third, we would be saying the same thing about Paradise. I guess we feel this way because CB is generally viewed as the better song, but as you said, it all has to do with release and hype. Same thing in the VLV era where LiJ and Lost flopped commercially, but no one really dashed an eyelid because it didn't really matter. Coldplay aren't and never were a singles band (like Rihanna, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars etc) where they have to release single after single to sell their album. They sell albums based on the totality of their work and by having a loyal fanbase. The only way for them to have 'marketed' CB would be if they went on more talk shows and talent shows to promote the single. I highly doubt they would do that again (That's a main reason why Paradise went to Number 1). Sure, they could have had a proper release date for CB and been more clear about it, but in the end, I doubt it would have mattered. CB will be a Coldplay-staple in the long-term and now its time for PoC. Also, in terms of B-sides, you previously mentioned that they are becoming increasingly rare and I agree with you as I don't expect any to be released. I do, however, expect an EP to be released. (One small note: you mentioned that their sales figures are the best of their career. AROBTTH was their commercial peak and they won't get anywhere near that with MX, but MX is doing great relative to the current climate of the sales market.)

Hi! (Kind of Late)
I forgot to do this, so I'll do it now. Name is Simon and I'm pretty late into Coldplay. Always liked them, but not enough to follow them. After I heard Christmas Lights, then I had to find out more and listened to their entire catalog. Now, their my favourite band. Also, I'm a big fan of hip-hop (Drake, Kanye, Jay-Electronica) and R&B (Usher, The Weeknd, R Kelly, Marvin Gaye, Sam Cooke). Recently though, I am trying to open up my musical tastes and getting more into bands (started listening to Mumford and Sons, enjoy them). And, as you can tell by my avatar, I'm a big fan of Karl Pilkington. Unintentionally the funniest person I have ever listened too. That is all for now.
