I take a more nuanced approach to the matter. My opinion is that the government, any government for that matter, shouldn't be in the business of codifying or categorizing people in this manner. Taking the broader view, I like the idea of offering tax credits and recognition for anyone in a partnership, whether that partnership be two elderly people who's spouses have died, or a heterosexual couple, or a gay couple, etc. as it is beneficial to the society in which it occurs. Leave the term 'marriage' to someone's religious affiliation, and that would be more in keeping with the spirit of the enlightenment - that of keeping a separation of church and state to protect both from one-another.
