The English National Opera (ENO) will produce a lesbian love story as part of next year's season of events, it has been announced.

 

The all female version of The Bitter Tears of Petra von Krant, based on a play and film by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, will be set in a fashion studio and is evidence of the ENO's attempts to modernise its output.

 

It hopes that by including more avant garde and exciting productions, more young people will be attracted to the opera.

 

It follows the appointment of Sean Doran as artistic director, who is being tipped to turn the stuffy image of opera around, and make it a more viable option for a younger crowd.

 

The ENO is based at the recently refurbished Coliseum in London, near Trafalgar Square.
