I thought those were the cells that fall off from the back of your eyes? Something like rods or cones or other.. I'm not really sure. But you know you have problems if you see too many of those - your eyes are somehow damaged.

I may be totally wrong here.

Thought the rods were just of animals with a black/white sight

Rod cells are photoreceptive cells that dont percieve colour or fine detail-they are really sensitive to light and are in high numbers.

Dark-adapted vision in humans is basically devoid of colour because it depends almost entirely on the functioning of rods.

so when you can see things at night is cause of your rod cells in the retina :D
