Petit Prince
Yeah it's really a nice place. You shoulda go to Ascona, it's one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland. It's a lot warmer there than where I live. I don't think it would be difficult to learn Dutch for someone who speaks German. But when I hear people talkin I don't understand anything. eline.
Ascona.. I'm gonna remind that ;) I think it isn't difficult to understand Dutch when you speak German.. but speaking might be harder to learn
Aad
a lot of words automatically make sense when you hear them, because they are closely related to german words..
Petit Prince
I understand Dutch a lot better when I read it, but it's difficult to understand people who speak Dutch.

Aad
Yeah, well, dutch people also have a lot of different accents, which makes it harder to understand them Even I don't understand certain accents

eline.
I actually don't know.. many people in Amsterdam speak Standard Dutch, but there are also people that I can't understand because of their accent
Petit Prince
Hm I didn't understand much, but maybe that wasn't because of their accent...
eline.
:D Is it just like when you go to France?.. once you say one word in French, they think you can speak the language and start talking to you in an amazing :P speed
Ireentje
They start correcting you in France too. I once had this guy correcting me for not pronouncing 'croissant' correctly, he kept hammering on for 10 minutes about the proper pronunciation. I was like, 10 or something :P
Petit Prince
Exactly. But in France I don't have that problem coz I can speak French. But I always have to ask them to speak slower.

Ireentje
Yeah is it just me, or do people just speak faster in some countries? I always get that feeling with the Spanish, the Italian and the French people. Okay, maybe with Italian and Spanish my problem is more that I can't tell one word from another, but I'm actually quite okay at French, and still I get the feeling they speak incredibly fast, a problem I don't have with for instance the Germans or the english. I've taken spanish classes for two years but I always have to ask the Spanish to talk slowly. When I start speaking spanish with them they answer my at high speed :P Even the French talk quite fast.
