June 2, 200521 yr I think, if anything, the 'X' side would be pessimistic, and 'Y' would be optimistic. But it doesn't really work either way.
June 2, 200521 yr From Wikipedia: "According to lead singer Chris Martin, the title X&Y is based on the ups and downs of his everyday life. Martin says "My whole day is a mixture of optimism and pessimism in its most extreme forms. And that’s what X&Y is to me. It’s two sides. I like the fact they’re very strong letters, very clear." So X are the optimistic songs, like Square One, What if, Fix You, Talk..etc and Y are the more pessimistic tunes like Speed of Sound, Low, Hardest Part, Swallowed in the Sea. The two sections represent the two sides of the album! how is SoS a pessmistic song??? Wikipedia is not a source to be quoting after, though. Anyone can edit that therefore we really can't know if it's true; unless it's backed-up by a link or something. SoS is not really pessimistic...Chris has said that it's about disasters and miracles and things that are so fantastic that we can't understand them. Nothing pessimistic (nor optimistic) there. Also... Fix You is not optimistic. I don't believe everything I read from Wiki. Alright then, well it does say 'according to the lead singer', if you find something more exclusive, let me know. :sneaky:

I've started or contributed to 90% of the Wikipedia material on Coldplay, including albums and singles. And I included that reference to the album... it's straight out of NME's interview with Chris: http://www.nme.com/news/111874.htm I more or less manage the Coldplay articles there, and trust me, it's all good! Maybe even moreso than Coldplaying.com :) My screenname there is Madchester. You can track the good work that I've done there... building everything from scratch, more or less.
June 2, 200521 yr Hmmm...I read that NME article and you really jumped the gun there. Chris says X&Y is a mixture of optimism and pessimism, but it doesn't mean that the album is divided as such. :/
June 2, 200521 yr That dividing theory is a bit odd in my opinion. SOS for example is Y1 on the album, but X1 on the single :)

The album but for a few tracks has a meloncholy and softly dark feel.

June 2, 200521 yr I think Chris means that the album is just a mixture of pessimism and optimism, or opposing forces, or just "opposites". But it's a mixture, the songs can't be divided up because it makes no sense then, at least according to the order that they're in.
June 2, 200521 yr I didn't say it was divided like that.... Justine just added that as a theory backing Chris' quote.
June 2, 200521 yr Ah *phew*...was starting to think you mislead everyone reading about Coldplay in Wiki! Really hope the album is not divided like the disc shows, that's just confusing. Hey SuchARush I'm looking at the coldplay stuff in wikipedia now and it looks really good, lotsa props to you if you did most of it!
June 2, 200521 yr Of course it doesn't have lyrics...they don't do lyrics :( It looks like the recycled paper type, instead of the case.
June 2, 200521 yr Coldplay's getting cheaper and cheaper   It's for enviromental reasons! lol
