NPR idiot

OMG!!! He has no idea. But then again, what else can you expect from NPR??? Besides that Dressy Bessy is made up of musicians not even close to Coldplay's level, there drummer that "mixes it up" actually varies little in style throughout the entire clip. As a drummer who has been playing for a modest six years, I can tell you that Coldplay's drummer has a much better understanding of his role in the band in terms of complimenting the band's esoteric style. Even comparing Dressy Bessy to Coldplay is an insult. Dressy Bessy builds off of basic 4-chord progressions where Coldplay strives to created a layered sound, attaching and withdrawing melody lines as the song's progress--not to mention adding some modulations (key changes) to hold the listener's interest.

To Will Champion: Keep doing what your doing, it's working man. I know that you know that one of the best things a drummer can do is not stick out.

To all of Coldplay: Your music is life-affirming, and as for communicating the problems in life, you hit the nail on the head.

this guys stupid.

You said it man.

this guys stupid.

You said it man.

:stunned: Indeed

Okay... so he's trying to prove that the Dressy Bessy drummer is better than Will, so the example that he uses against him is the plainest drum part I think I've ever heard. It's just pounding. I could do that if I wanted.

And also... he seems to think that since Dressy Bessy is more "peppy" or makes people "happy" or whatever... that it automatically makes it better than Coldplay?

Er... no man, that's just a different style of music.

Give me a break. You guys need to learn how to take criticism of your favorite band. I don't really agree with this guy's argument (which is why I'm posting here and not at a Dressy Bessy message board), but he doesn't really have overly negative things to say about Coldplay, and I hardly see how his opinion qualifies him as "stupid." All he's saying is he likes Dressy Bessy more and thinks they deserve more attention than Coldplay. There are lots of bands that I would make the same argument for, even as a Coldplay fan.

Also, I'd take flawed criticism that's at least thoughtful and intelligent over a commercial radio station with a 20 song playlist that repeats itself six times a day with some obnoxious DJ chattering about the weather, like pretty much every other non-college radio station has right now. It's why I like NPR.

As far as the drumming thing is concerned, I think the NPR guy (I didn't catch his name) misses the point. Coldplay isn't about drumming. Will serves the band perfectly, but it's not a role that couldn't be adequately filled by most competent drummers. Pointing out drumming as Coldplay's flaw is sort of like disliking a painting because of the frame it's in. Hell, has this guy ever heard a Beatles record? It doesn't get much more straight-forward and no-frills than Ringo Starr, but nobody thinks the Beatles were bad because of it. Like awmonroe said: one of the best things a drummer can do is not stick out.

Im just saying how he thinks that will doesnt "mix it" up and the "dressy bessy" drummer does when he obviously doesnt. The drum clip he played was...very uncreative and plain. Im not saying simple isnt good but both drummers are simple and why say one is better than the other?

National Public Radio

National PATHETIC Radio more like!! :)

Will said it best himself... he's the best non-drummer out there. He's not into all the fancy drumming and stuff.. he a non-drummer!! And damn good at it too!!

It's just the fact that he misses the point of Coldplay's music that gets me riled. He acts like Coldplay's music doesn't make sense because it's music claims to be self-affirming but isn't because it just doesn't come out and say "BE HAPPY." In fact in "Low" the chorus sounds very triumphant, and I see it saying "I'm 'low' right now and that's ok because I'm going to come out of it." Maybe that's just me, but I think a lot of Coldplay's "sad lyrics" are placed into a "feel good" musical context to suggest the self-affirmation.

BTW here's a NY Times article that might get you more riled.

he said "dressy bessy" was better then coldplay, my sisters scream sound better then them, this guys a nut. he shouldnt be alowd to review music anymore.

What's NPR??

 Not too many people listen to NPR, the majority of people on air get very irritating pretty quickly. :P

I think daytime DJ's in general get "irritating" very quickly!! Far too much yapping! :) Give me nighttime radio any time.
