*Sarah*
Martin Refuses To Meet British Prime Minister August 10, 2005 - World Entertainment News Network Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has snubbed British Prime Minister Tony Blair's invitation to meet him at his London residence - because the Yellow star feared it would damage his image. A galaxy of stars, including rockers Oasis and Sir Elton John, have accepted invitations to Blair's Downing Street home. And Martin respects the British premier, but does not want to be seen publicly socialising with the leader of the Labour party, for fear of offending his fans who may disagree with Blair's political goals and stance over the war in Iraq. He says, "I'm not going to go. I really like Tony Blair. He's interested in the same things as I am - he plays the guitar and he always gives the impression of doing what he can to help. "But I don't particularly want to be photographed with him at the moment." Source: http://www.teenhollywood.com what do you think?
olive
Well... If he likes him, I don't really understand why he refuses to meet him  But that's his choice

Rob W
I CAN understand why he doesnt want to go tho. I think its good that he is political in terms of MTF, but i think he doesnt want to be seen to take sides. He's political but he's not a supporter (well publically) of a party. And its not like by going he's supporting a cause, or is trying to change anythin, its basically just a pointless meeting.
Marie
Public opinion is against Blair though especially over issues such as Iraq. That's why Chris turned down the invite.
Rob W
yeah, its best for him to stay on neautral grounds and play it safe by not offending anyone.

Gas_Man
so coldplay fans OWN Chris? maybe Chris should not care so much about what oher people think, and do what HE thinks it right. This story is stupid..and so is Chris, if he actually cares what I [not me personally, but as a fan] thinks

victaniac
Anyone think that maybe Chris doesn't think much of Blair to begin with? I mean if your only reason to like a person is because they play guitar... I'm thinking that he thinks Blair is okay as a person, but when it comes down to this decisions as a leader, he doesn't agree and therefore does not have any business meeting him. What do you say to a person who's actions you don't like? After your done introducing yourself, it gets kinda tough. His "image" is probably a nicer way out.. if he just straight out declined, many people would be offended and think him obnoxious or God knows what. Carol_Berryman
:pleased: well done chris! i agree w/ victaniac, he probabely doesn't like this war/terrorism thing and blair decisions as a leader so, he doesn't want to make publicity with him! he's totally right!why should he support somebody who he doesn't agree?
jackled
It definitily was a great decision. People like Chris or Bono are highly influential and they don't care about a politician but they do politics. They are concerned about the future of our world. They carry a message everywhere they go. The head of state has called for me by name but I don't have time for him. Lucky - Radiohead
manhn
Bono did a lot oh photo ops during the Canadian election in support of Paul Martin (who eventually became Prime Minister), in the hopes Martin would agree to increase aid to Africa. Once elected, Martin does no such thing (or he doesn't increase it to the levels Bono wanted). Ultimately, all of these invitations are attempts by politicians to get a nice photo-op with a cool celebrity whose fans would then find the politician cool. If the band is loathe to allow their music to hawk soft drinks, then the band probably doesn't want to be used to elevate the power of politicians, unless the politician is doing something the band really, really believes in.
