If you have not already heard of Wolfmother, the chances are that you will do soon enough. Rolling Stone magazine listed the band among its ‘Top 10 Bands to Watch in 2006’ and their ‘retro-rock’ sound is winning them an ever-increasing legion of fans.

Their self-titled debut album, which was produced by Dave Sardy (of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Oasis and Marilyn Manson fame), was released in October of last year and the band are currently in between gruelling tours of the USA and Europe, which will include an appearance at Denmark’s legendary Roskilde Festival on 2 July 2006.

It will be 13 July before they return to their Australian homeland, but in the meantime the band are enjoying watching Guus Hiddink’s Socceroos take on the world at Germany 2006, and Wolfmother’s singer Andrew Stockdale told FIFAworldcup.com that he has high hopes of the Aussies booking a place in the last 16.

Are you a big football fan?

I wouldn’t say I’m a big football fan, but I played football as a kid. And I think everybody in Australia has been converted to be a football fan by the World Cup

Did you see the match and, if so, where did you watch it?

I didn’t see the match live. We had just come back from being on tour in the United States and were home for just three days before leaving again to go on tour in Europe. The game was at two o’clock in the morning and with the jetlag, I just couldn’t stay awake. There was a repeat during the day, so I watched the game then.

And what did you think?

It was exciting. Obviously we all wish the result was different, but certainly the Australian team really held their own against the best team in the world. It was just amazing to see them hanging in there against such an incredible opposition.

How would you rate the performance of the Australian team?

I thought they played really well. They had some good chances, but unfortunately they weren’t able to convert. But for a team that is just playing its second World Cup, to hang on to the world most successful team in the World Cup history and just concede two goals is a pretty good result.

What was the high point of the game for you?

Probably at half-time. Because we weren’t sure if Australia would be able to stay in touch with the Brazilian team and yet, at that stage, there were no goals for either side. We were still in the game and it certainly wasn’t embarrassing. Hopes were getting very high by half-time. There were a couple of opportunities when Harry Kewell came on and it felt like Australia could come back into the game, but it wasn’t to be.

Which player stood out for you?

There are a number of great players in the Brazil team. Obviously Ronaldinho, and also Robinho, the substitute for Ronaldo. As soon as he came on, he electrified the Brazilian team.

For Australia, our best players were Mark Viduka and Tim Cahill, who had a great opportunity to score.

Do you think Australia can make it to the Round of 16?

Yes I do, they beat Japan 3-1 and Croatia only managed to draw 0-0 with the same team, so we only have to draw with Croatia to make it through the next round. It will all come down to one game and hopefully we will have the luck on our side. If we do then, yes, there is a good chance that Guus Hiddink’s team will make it. He is an amazing coach and has been in charge of teams at previous World Cups, so he knows what he is doing. We have a good team and they should have plenty of confidence after the first two games.

Have you seen any other games of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™?

I have seen bits and pieces, because I was touring a lot in America. The games have a good profile there, but I think the profiles will be much higher in Europe and certainly much higher in Australia. We have seen some of the games or highlights of the games on the tour bus.

What is the greatest match you have ever seen?

That would be the U-12 Final that we won in the team that I played in when I was a kid. That will always stay in my mind as the greatest match I have ever seen.

What was the first FIFA World Cup you watched?

That was the World Cup in Mexico.

Which game would you like to have seen at a FIFA World Cup? Australia versus anybody in the final! (Laughing)

What is your tip for the final in 2006?

I have to say Brazil, but I don’t know. I guess I haven’t looked at enough who is at the other side. But everybody is talking about Brazil, Germany and England. Actually, we are touring in Germany and England, so I better say Germany or England (laughing).

Normally the Home Team does pretty well. When we had the Olympics in Australia our team performed much better then they normally do at Olympics. When France had the World Cup they did well and when South Korea had it, they did well. To play at home, that will help the German team a lot.

What is your website? http://www.wolfmother.com

And what about your future projects?

We just released our album which came out in Europe last week and we are number 15 in Germany, which is exciting. We are playing at a bunch of festivals, so it is pretty much just touring, touring. After Christmas, we will take a break over our Australian summertime.

I saw them this weekend at the Hurricane-Festival. A friend told me to go there, I didn't know them - but their show was stunning :stunned:

I had a few laughs as the singer (with the 70s Afro :laugh3: ) did some special guitar-moves hehehe :)

Gonna try out their album soon
