A POLICE chief yesterday heaped praise on England’s army of World Cup fans — saying: “It was beyond our wildest dreams that supporters could behave this well.”

Gerhard Hauptmannl, head of the Nuremberg force, spoke after 70,000 packed the city to cheer their heroes against Trinidad & Tobago — with no reports of serious incident.

He said: “This was an incredible 24 hours for our city. It was beyond our wildest dreams that football fans could behave this well. It was a pleasure to see them here and we hope to welcome them back in the future.

“The message is clear to every German town and person. It is that the image of the English is good.

“They have come here as friends to enjoy sport and enjoy themselves. They have not come to cause trouble.” With everyone hoping the peace continues, Mr Hauptmannl also praised papers including The Sun for “spreading the message of friendship and goodwill to fans”.

He added: “There was an attitude of responsible journalism and we believe it helped tell the message of what we were trying to achieve.”

Nuremberg had geared up for a yob meltdown for more than a year and had 5,000 police on standby.

But only 28 English fans were held, compared to 482 Germans and Poles amid rioting following their game in Dortmund the night before.

Nuremberg cop Peter Grimm said: “Despite what we feared, the English are the greatest fans in the world.

“They came here with peace and respect and in a friendly mood.”

The city’s mayor Dr Ulrich Maly joined in an enormous street party with fans after England’s 2-0 win.

He said: “It was fantastic, just fantastic. When football supporters come to Nuremberg, bars and restaurants always worry about behaviour.

“There was no worry with the English, we want to see them return.”

^Yes - the German and Polish fans are winning easily in terms of arrests!!:P

In this case...the world cup is only 1 week young..

haha...this sounds like a justify of the english fans for me...

It's just a matter of numbers...

It is more probable that under millions of german fans in the Ruhrgebiet are some violent ones than among the 70.000 english in Nuremberg.

And remember: there have also been violent actions in England, too during this World Cup.

That doesn't count, as it wasn't in Germany!;)

Great article... the English supporters were really nice, but you can't really compare England-T&T with Germany-Poland. If England would have been played against Poland I'm sure there were more people arrested by the police. ;)

Those fans causing trouble at the screenings were welsh/scotish annoyed that they were not in the finals
