British rock outfit Coldplay today backed the Socceroos to make it to the World Cup semi-finals.

 

Speaking before its final 16 clash with Italy tonight, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin said there were plenty of lessons to be learnt from Australia's performance in the World Cup.

 

"Australia are going to get to the semi-finals," Martin said in Sydney today. "The thing about Australia is they play that game in particular like life should be lived. They attack it, and they just go for it so heavy. It's so fun to watch and I personally get a real kick out of watching them at the moment."

 

Coldplay have been on tour for their latest album X&Y for several months and have been enjoying downtime in recent weeks with the World Cup. But while the Socceroos have stunned the critics in Germany, Martin warned Australians not to let their success go to their heads.

 

"Maybe when they start getting really good, and do really well, they'll start to become more cynical," he said. "But at the moments it's like watching an excited kid – it's incredible."

 

Coldplay arrived in the country last week, kicking off the Australian leg of their world tour in Brisbane and will play in Sydney tonight. The band – Chris Martin, Will Champion, Guy Berryman and Jonny Buckland – will also play dates in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Coldplay, one of the biggest rock outfits in the world, have sold some 17 million albums worldwide, won four Grammy awards, and four Brit awards.

 

Rumours circulated in February that the band would split. However, Martin today said while the group wouldn't record another album simply for the point of it, they still worked well together.

 

"We are not angst-ridden about anything anymore. We've made it ... we have come this far ... we have been through backlash. We have had three albums now, sold lots of records and played to a lot of intelligent people."

 

Martin is married to Hollywood actor Gwyneth Paltrow and the couple have two children.
