Smoke alert closes Channel Tunnel

Rail services through the Channel Tunnel have been suspended after smoke was seen coming from a freight shuttle train on Monday lunchtime.

 

The operator Eurotunnel said lorry drivers on board were involved in an evacuation when a fire alarm went off.

 

Crews from Kent Fire and Rescue Service have been sent to the scene to help with efforts to reach the freight shuttle in the north-running tunnel.

 

It was closed to trains following the incident at about 1230 BST.

 

Eurotunnel said it was hoped services could be resumed later on Monday.

 

Spokesman John Keefe said: "Unfortunately with this being a very busy time of year, it's going to take a few hours to clear the backlog once we've got started again."

 

Eurostar said its passenger services through the Channel Tunnel from London to Paris and Brussels had also been suspended.
