Bush: Iraq a 'decisive ideological struggle'

President predicts victory despite disillusionment

The Associated Press

Updated: 2:32 p.m. ET Aug 31, 2006

SALT LAKE CITY - President Bush on Thursday predicted victory in the war on terror at a time of increasing public anxiety at home, likening the struggle against Islamic fundamentalism with the fight against Nazis and communists.

With just over two months until Election Day, Bush said opponents of the war in Iraq who are calling for a plan to bring home troops would create a disaster in the Middle East.

"Many of these folks are sincere and they're patriotic but they could be -- they could not be more wrong," the president said. "If America were to pull out before Iraq could defend itself, the consequences would be absolutely predictable, and absolutely disastrous. We would be handing Iraq over to our worst enemies -- Saddam's former henchmen, armed groups with ties to Iran, and al-Qaida terrorists from all over the world who would suddenly have a base of operations far more valuable than Afghanistan under the Taliban."

I think Bush is right when he says that Iraq needs to be sorted out but of course it should, that's no doubt, it's partly HIS mess.

But his comments about the Taliban and Al-Qaeda are only attempts to remind us of "our enemies" using far too familiar blanket names.

no doubt it needs to be sorted... the question is how? How do we pull out with out our troops getting slaughtered in the process, is the tough agenda... I'd love to see how the administration plans on doing this... but what the hell does Dubbya care... he's leaving office in 2 years... its for the next Pres. to deal with.. but its such an ugly situation there.. we're basically fucked.

No matter who takes office... its going to be an ugly mess.

Berrywomen is a lovely lovely girl....... so is president bush...guess they are the same

ps if we dont learn from history we are doomed to repeat it, but i guess history's a waste of time eh?

Send in McDonalds, Coca Cola and Starbucks. They'll have the place sorted out in no time, and probably with less bloodshed

What do you mean PARTLY HIS MESS????

Its all his fault, he led America and Britain into a war which the majorty of the people in both countries did not want.

at the time i was all for the war, but alot of people in both countries didnt want it, and this is supposed to be a democracy where the many have more say then the few.

Anyway Iraq is a mess, and we cant leave it as it is now, we need soultions not waste time pointing fingers.

How would you guys solve the Iraq issue?

What question? you deny simple historic facts, such as the holocaust or that israel existed thousands of years ago....:\

hahahaha that is a great point there nick, you all know im a lib!!! and southern lib at that!! proud of it!

Well if Brush thinks we will have any say in what happens next hes even more of an idiot than i thought. They have already slipped into civil war, and we are basically just playing referee. And out "police forces" we are training, are either insurgents, or guys against the other religion looking for a legal way to kill the other side.....so we are basically not doing any real good there. Bush's real plan is to "stay the coarse" (sp) until 2008, then its somebody else's problem!!:veryangry:

Iraq is still winnable and if we leave now a even bigger mess will be created. but after we fix that we need to leave all of the world. pull our troops back and worry about the border, and Iran we still need to deal with the nuke program, but after we stop that we need to keep our troops in america

But there is really no way to win there if you look at it, see we took out the Sunni's, there are far less of then than Shiites. Now the Shiites have power and are fighting the Sunni's. Of course the Shiites will win because there are simply more of them, and we are training them. But guess who else is Shiite? Iran. We are simply helping along the Iran problem. What if after the Shiites win and we leave, Iran embraces Iraq and they are both in it together? we would have created waaaaaaay more problems than we ever had with Heussein:shocked2:

well thats the big question there Nick... how the hell do we fix it?? No one has a plan... NO ONE!! NO exit stategy.. no nothing!
