Knowing that this song was originally written for Johnny Cash, you can't help but wonder if this isn't a beautifully written gospel song about Mr. Cash's life-long struggle with his faith. Till Kingdom Come is a strong reference to Heaven... and every time I listen to this song I'm reminded of the following scripture in the bible: (2 Peter 3: 8-10 - NLT)

 

"But you must not forget, dear friends, that a day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise to return, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to perish, so he is giving more time for everyone to repent. But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. To me... regardless of Chris's intention... I only hear Johnny Cash singing of his life... singing about how he has (like us all) wanted someone who would understand him.... someone who can set us free.. both from this world.. and from our bondage. To me this is like saying... Lord... I know I'm not there yet... and I don't know if I'm ready... but I hope that I'm one of those who you are waiting to save... Please... even though I'm not sure which way I'm headed... I ask that you wait for me...

on the live DVD "Live 2003", after lyrics "sing, ah", Martin continues with:

This is a beautiful song about how bad he feels for doing someone wrong and how he misses them so much. He knows "Life is for Living" but he doesn't care because he would rather be dead than without them.
