"This and What If and Fix You have always been on the album. It was meant to rip off [The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl's] Fairytale of New York- its not as good' date=' but that's what you always do, you try and better another song."[/quote']

it's rare that song lyrics stand out to me, but this song immediately grabbed my attention. This "person A" was feeling lost and confused, for whatever reason, and is singing about "person B", who saved them from heading down a dangerous path. I think there is something keeping them from being together - whether it be distance, etc. This had caused Person B to give up hope of ever being happy and just wanted to settle for less ("swallowed in the sea" of fish), but Person A had completely selfless feelings for them and knew that they deserved better. . I'm not sure if I believe in the idea of soulmates, but I think this song pretty accurately describes it. Two people who are meant to be together in the end, no matter what. Fate only takes you so far, the rest is up to you.

I'm dealing with something like this right now, it's tough and it hurts - but I have faith. complete faith. it seems ridiculously naive but I can't change the way I feel. I refuse to settle for less. I kind of feel like a tool for writing this, I just felt like letting it out.

You cut me down a tree and brought it back to me

and that’s what made me see where I was going wrong

You put me on a shelf and kept me for yourself

I can only blame myself, you can only blame me

and I could write a song a hundred miles long

Well that’s where I belong and you belong with me

and I could write it down or spread it all around

Get lost and then get found or swallowed in the sea

You put me on a line and hung me out to dry

Darling that’s when I decided to go to see you

You cut me down to size and opened up my eyes

Made me realize what I could not see

and I could write a book, the one they'll say that shook the world

and then it took, it took it back from me

and I could write it down and spread it all around

Get lost and then get found and you'll come back to me

Not swallowed in the sea

Oohhhhh Ahhhhhh

and I could write a song a hundred miles long

Well that’s where I belong and you belong with me

The streets you’re walking on, a thousand houses long

Well that’s where I belong and you belong with me

Oh what good is it to live with nothing left to give

Forget but not forgive, not loving all you see

Oh the streets you’re walking on a thousand houses long

Well that’s where I belong and you belong with me

Not swallowed in the sea

You belong with me, not swallowed in the sea

Yeah you belong with me

Not swallowed in the sea.

'Shiver' is the first single from the debut album Parachutes.

The months of pre-production, gigging and studio time which preceded Coldplay’s arrival in Liverpool's Parr St Studios had not been wasted.

When the band began jamming new tracks such as Yellow, Everything’s Not Lost and Trouble just before their New Year break, the album’s projected tracklisting quickly changed. It became apparent that some of the older songs had been surpassed and were no longer going to make the final cut.

This is a great song of desperation about the one you love' date=' but cant be with. I think they have a history together, she probably dumped him and now pays him no attention whatsoever, which is what the core of this song is about. Little stalker-ish perhaps, but a great rock tune.[/quote']

I don't think it's about unrequited love. I mean, not in the sense that he loves her and she just doesn't give a damn about him. To me it's about how they're almost best friends and he loves her more than that but she doesn't know of his feelings. Because to me, when you love someone so much they're your best friend and he's willing to be this and do that for her no matter what. Whether she loves him back or they are just friends. He's loves her that much.

so I look in your direction

but you pay me no attention, do you?

I know you don't listen to me

'cos you say you see straight through me, don't you?

but on and on

from the moment I wake

to the moment I sleep

I'll be there by your side

just you try and stop me

I'll be waiting in line

just to see if you care

oh, did you want me to change?

well I'd change for good

and I want you to know

that you'll always get your way

I wanted to say...

don't you shiver

you shiver

singing loud and clear

I'll always be waiting for you

so you know how much I need you

but you never even see me, do you?

and is this my final chance of getting you?

but on and on

from the moment I wake

to the moment I sleep

I'll be there by your side

just you try and stop me

I'll be waiting in line

just to see if you care, if you care

oh, did you want me to change?

well I'd change for good

and I want you to know

that you'll always get your way

and I wanted to say...

don't you shiver

don't you shiver

I sing it loud and clear

I'll always be waiting for you

yeah I'll always be waiting for you

yeah I'll always be waiting for you

yeah I'll always be waiting for you

for you, I will always be waiting

and it's you I see

but you don't see me

and it's you I hear

so loud and so clear

I sing it loud, and clear

and I'll always be waiting for you

so I look in your direction

but you pay me no attention

and you know how much I need you

but you never even see me

13. Talk

'Talk' takes the riff from electronic music legends Kraftwerk's Computer Love and builds a completely new song. It keeps the mechanical beat of the original but adds a huge guitar and dancefloor filling bass-line. Stadiums wont be big enough to contain it.

"Talk" is the third single from X&Y, the third album by British alternative rock band Coldplay. It was released in the UK on 19 December 2005. The radio edit has been available since 14 November on the iTunes Music Store. The song entered the UK charts at #10 on 25 December 2005.

Coldplay received permission from the electronica band Kraftwerk to use the main riff from their song "Computer Love" for "Talk", replacing Kraftwerk's synthesizers with guitars.

The band recorded three separate versions of "Talk"; the one found on X&Y was based on an early cut of the song. A newer version of the track (with a different set of lyrics) was leaked onto the internet in March 2005. "Talk" was originally intended to be a B-side for the single "Speed of Sound" before becoming the last addition to X&Y's track listing.

This song was performed live at the 2005 MTV Europe Music Awards on 3 November in Lisbon, Portugal. It was also performed live at the 2006 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

The music video for "Talk" was helmed by director/photographer Anton Corbijn. Filming took place on 5th and 6th November at Ealing Studios, London, just before the band began an European leg on the Twisted Logic Tour. The black-and-white clip invokes a B-movie science fiction theme, with imagery ranging from a flying saucer to 3D glasses.

It seems the entire video can in fact been viewed in three dimensions using Anaglyphic 3D glasses like the ones worn by the band. Due to the red (left eye) & blue (right eye) edges that define a stereoscopic image. However the effect is subtle and best appreciated with a high resolution version.

The main plot line of the music video features Coldplay as astronauts landing on an alien planet, where they re-activate a dormant robot. The robot in the video bears a strong physical resemblance to the original Marvin the Paranoid Android from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy television series. Along the line of televison series, at the very end of the video, there is whistling that resembles The Clangers. A previous Coldplay track, "Don't Panic" also referenced the series with its title. At one point of the clip, subtitles present the lyrics of the song spelt backwards just like in the video for "No Surprises" by Radiohead.

392d19d0.jpg

"It started off with a Kraftwerk sample [it nicks the riff from the German technocrats' Computer Love]. Chris wrote a letter to Ralf [Hutter' date= Kraftwerk kingpin] in German."

"The record company said' date=' 'This has to be the first single.' So we scrapped it, re-recorded it, scrapped it."[/quote']

"I flew back to New York for a day and mixed it. Then I was able to enjoy it as a song' date=' rather than 1012 ideas that weren't right."[/quote']

This song is about uncertainty for sure. But it could apply to many people because it does not specify that it is about uncertainty in love, in relationships, in friendships, in your career etc . . .

For me, it totally makes sense because sometimes I "feel like a puzzle" I can't find my missing piece. LIke, for me, I've got what I want and then some . . .but ther'es something missing still. Sooooo coool that they can just put down in words thoughts I couldn't pinpoint myself. But growing up is not lame. You just need to know that life is one big roller coaster ride. As much as we may feel lost, we just need to remember that it is an adventure, and it is fun!

It's cool because Colplay answers the question about what this person should do. Climb a ladder up to the sun, do something that's never been done. They're telling us to get out there and live our lives to the fullest. There are no limits and life is what you make of it. I love it. It is so inspiring and it really helps when I feel lost.

Oh brother I can’t, I can't get through

I've been trying hard to reach you 'cause I don't know what to do

Oh brother I can't believe it's true

I'm so scared about the future and I wanna talk to you

Oh I wanna talk to you

You can take a picture of something you see

In the future where will I be?

You can climb a ladder up to the sun

Or a write a song nobody has sung or do

Something that's never been done

Are you lost or incomplete?

Do you feel like a puzzle, you can't find your missing piece?

Tell me how do you feel?

Well I feel like they're talking in a language I don't speak

And they’re talking it to me

So you take a picture of something you see

In the future where will I be?

You can climb a ladder up to the sun

Or a write a song nobody has sung or do

Something that's never been done, do

Something that's never been done

So you don't know where you're going and you wanna talk

And you feel like you're going where you've been before

You tell anyone who'll listen but you feel ignored

Nothing's really making any sense at all, let's talk

Let's talk, let's talk, let's talk

Mid-tempo soft-shoe shuffle boosted by a charming Martin vocal. "The truth is... I miss you" guaranteed to thaw the iciest of male listeners hearts. He'd make someone a lovely husband one day - eh Gwyneth!

This is my all-time favorite Coldplay song. I think it means that he was trying to find a reason to break up with a girl for one reason or another (maybe he didnt want to get too close or something...) and as soon as she was gone' date=' he realized how much he loved her. I can relate to this song in sooo many ways, but thats what it seemed like to me.[/quote']

I think this song perfectly explains the situation so many people are in. You deny someone' date=' you are too scared of going further, of making the first step and later you notice how important and life-changing this step or this person would have been. You become aware of your feelings for a person but it's too late already. you simply passed by an island because you were too scared to explore it. it would have been an island to discover but now that island is gone and you can never come back to it[/quote']

A warning sign

I missed the good part then I realised

I started looking and the bubble burst

I started looking for excuses

Come on in

I've got to tell you what a state I'm in

I've got to tell you in my loudest tones

That I started looking for a warning sign

When the truth is

I miss you

Yeah the truth is

That I miss you so

A warning sign

You came back to haunt me and I realised

That you were an island and I passed you by

You were an island to discover

Come on in

I've got to tell you what a state I'm in

I've got to tell you in my loudest tones

That I started looking for a warning sign

And the truth is

I miss you

Yeah the truth is

I miss you so

And I'm tired

I should not have let you go

So I crawl back into your open arms

Yes I crawl back into your open arms

And I crawl back into your open arms

Yes I crawl back into your open arms

11. God Put A Smile Upon Your Face

"When we came to record it in the studio we struggled because there was something just not quite right about it and I wasn't happy about where we'd left it and where we were happy to leave it and we couldn't put our finger on what it was and so it was a really nice day one day, me and Chris were just trying, I was actually just trying to record bass at the time and me and Chris were just sitting down trying to brainstorm it and work out what was wrong and so I started trying to just do a few different bass lines and stuff.

Between the two of us we came up with just this kind of groove, which stays on the same note as opposed to change, it's quite technical but it kind of added a bit of bounce to the song and it made it roll along in a much more fluid way. It was a bit mechanical before and it's just interesting how something small like that can really change the whole vibe of a song. It was just nice because from there on it was one of our favourite tracks and it almost didn't get on the record but it's now one of our favourite tracks."

'God Put A Smile Upon Your Face' is their fourth single from the Sophomore album A Rush Of Blood To The Head. This track was originally titled 'Your Guess Is As Good As Mine' before renaming it for the inclusion onto the second album.

You'll find the meaing of this song in the Bible.

9What shall we conclude then? Are we any better? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. 10As it is written:

"There is no one righteous, not even one;

11there is no one who understands,

no one who seeks God.

12All have turned away,

they have together become worthless;

there is no one who does good,

not even one."

Romans 3:9

You've got to say that you're on your way down, because no-one is righteous, not even one.

So, the answer to the question where do we go? Heaven or Hell? must be Hell.

Where do we draw the line? Good or Bad? We're bad.

Who is good enough to enter into Heaven? No-one, everyone has sinned.

BUT

God gave us grace. Grace means giving something that has not been earned.

Where do we go to fall from grace? You can't! God's grace is all encompassing. It includes everyone. There is no-one who is bad enough to be rejected by God.

So, don't ever say you're on your way down! God won't reject you, but you can reject God. That's free will.

Just Believe, and God will put a smile upon your face!

Where do we go, nobody knows

I've got a say, I'm on my way down

God give me style and give me grace

God put a smile upon my face

Where do we go to draw the line?

I've got a say, I wasted all your time, honey honey

Where do I go to fall from grace?

God put a smile upon your face, yeah

And ah, when you work it out I'm worse than you

Yeah, when you work it out I wanted to

And ah, when you work out where to draw the line

Your guess is as good as mine

Where do we go, nobody knows

Don't ever say you're on your way down when

God gave you style and gave you grace

God put a smile upon your face

And ah, when you work it out I'm worse than you

Yeah, when you work it out I want it too

And ah, when you work out where to draw the line

Your guess is as good as mine

It's as good as mine

It's as good as mine

It's as good as mine

As good as mine

As good as mine

As good as mine

As good as mine

Where do we go, nobody knows

Don't ever say you're on your way down when

God gave you style and gave you grace

And put a smile upon your face

GPASUYF is only 11, and Warning Sign, dont even get me started.

Maybe Im biased but, I dont think theres a more immence sounding song.

ahhhh I need more! I'm getting goosebumps and sweaty hands. I'm just DYING of anticipation!

"I'm gonna buy a gun and start a war if you can find something worth fighting for" announces the perma-troubles singer on another Pink Floyd-a-like strum. Understated chorus' date=' big widescreen chorus: how very David Gilmour.[/quote']

i was listening to an interview' date=' and chris martin said that a "rush of blood to the head" is just the feeling of getting it done and over with. sort of acting on impulse. at least that's what i gathered from the explanation.[/quote']

A rush of blood to the head is that moment when emotions override all logic, causing you to do stupid and reckless things because you aren't thinking clearly.

The song is about a guy who just got dumped by his girlfriend. Now they either lived together in, let's say, an apartment (or house), or spent a lot of time there together. All the problems that led to the girl breaking up with the guy took place in this apartment, and the guy sees the apartment as a representation of all of their problems and all of his mistakes. As he desperately tries to think of ways to get his girl back, he decides that if he gets rid of the apartment, he'll erase all of his mistakes. He isn't thinking clearly because of all the emotions from just breaking up, so in "a rush of blood to the head," he goes back and buys the apartment and burns it down. He's calling to his ex-girlfriend to come see what he has done, come watch as all of their problems and all of his mistakes disappear in a blazing fire. He thinks that the apartment represents all of his mistakes for his ex also, so he wants her to stand and watch the fire until she's satisfied that all of their problems are gone and they can get back together again. At the end of the first verse, he's asking his girlfriend what can he do to get her back. The line, "He said I'm gonna buy a gun and start a war, if you can tell me something worth fighting for," is his way of saying, I'll go out there and destroy all of the problems you have with me, if you would only tell me what those problems are.

Now the song leads into the chorus, where the guy is saying to his ex-girlfriend, your movements away from me are causing me to break down ("honey, all the movements you're starting to make, see me crumble and fall on my face"). This guy knows the mistakes that he's made, and he's trying to tell her that he can make them all disappear by burning down the place where so many of their problems and fights took place. But his mistakes and his reckless actions are just giving her more reason to start moving on.

In the second verse he's still telling his girlfriend to come watch as all of his mistakes burn to the ground. The other people around him watching the fire might have lived in the apartment building or around their house, and some laugh and some cry as the building burns down. But his girlfriend just sits there and wonders why he's doing something like this. She wants him to see that he can't blame other things for the mistakes that he's made. Now the guy is really getting desperate, and he's for sure going to go out and destroy all of her problems, if only she can tell him what it is that he's fighting for. All of the reckless mistakes that he's making are because of one emotional moment of a rush of blood to the head.

At the end of the song the guy has realized that his girl has left, but he's still asking her to come back. He's wondering when he'll get to see her pretty face again, and he's still waiting by the burned out remains of their apartment, the destruction he caused because of a rush of blood to the head.

He said I'm gonna buy this place and burn it down

I'm gonna put it six feet underground

He said I'm gonna buy this place and watch it fall

Stand here beside me baby in the crumbling walls

Oh I'm gonna buy this place and start a fire

Stand here until I fill all your heart's desires

Because I'm gonna buy this place and see it burn

And do back the things they did to you in return

Ah, ah, ah

He said Oh I'm gonna buy a gun and start a war

If you can tell me something worth fighting for

Oh I'm gonna buy this place is what I said

Blame it upon a rush of blood to head

(And) honey

All the movements your starting to make

See me crumble and fall on my face

And I know the mistakes that I made

See it all disappear without a trace

And they call as they beckon you on

They say start as you mean to go on

Start as you mean to go on

He said I'm gonna buy this place and see it go

Stand here beside me baby watch the orange glow

Some'll laugh and some just sit and cry

But you just sit down then you wonder why

So I'm gonna buy a gun and start a war

If you can tell me something worth fighting for

And I'm gonna buy this place is what I said

Blame it upon a rush of blood to the head

ah to the head, oh

(And) honey

All the movements you're starting to make

See me crumble and fall on my face

And I know the mistakes that I made

See it all disappear without a trace

And they call as they beckon you on

They say start as you mean to go on

As you mean to go on, as you mean to go on

So meet me by the bridge, meet me by the lane

When am I gonna see that pretty face again

Meet me on the road, meet me where I said

Blame it all upon

A rush of blood to the head

The first singe and another of those bittersweet but empowering anthems: simple Jonny Buckland guitar figure destined to promp arms-aloft' date=' bare-boobs-on-the-video-screen action at a stadium gig sometime soon - much to the band's probable despair.[/quote']

"In My Place" is the first single on Coldplay's second album A Rush of Blood to the Head. This was their third Top 10 hit on the UK Singles Chart. Regional singles were released for UK, Europe, the Netherlands, France, Canada, and Australia. Promo singles were released in UK, US, France, and Japan. The single cover features guitarist Jon Buckland, art directed by Solve Sundsbo.

"In My Place" was one of Coldplay's "old-new" songs for their second album. It had originally been written at the time of Parachutes original release in September 2000 (see 2000 in music). The song had been performed regularly on live tours prior to A Rush of Blood to the Head.

"In My Place" won Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 2003 Grammy Awards.

I think this song is about being in a relationship you should not be in, for whatever reason. Crossing lines and giving up parts of yourself that you should never for anyone.

I think it is actually meant to come from two different people. One is the guy begging the girl back, and asking for mercy for "crossing lines he should not have crossed" and using the excuse that "he was lost"

And then the girl hears family, friends, etc, attempting to open her eyes to the reality that this guy is not good for her. "How long must she wait?" "How long must she pay?"

---or---

maybe it is one person who has hurt others in the past and now cannot find a real relationship because he created such negative Karma for his romantic future. Interesting.

I think "lines that I couldn't change" are circumstances beyond his/her control, not necessarily something he did. Then he/she crossed them, and should not have.

In my place, in my place

Were lines that I couldn't change

I was lost, oh yeah

I was lost, I was lost

Crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed

I was lost, oh yeah

And yeah

How long must you wait for it?

Yeah, how long must you pay for it?

Yeah, how long must you wait for it?

For it

I was scared, I was scared

Tired and under prepared

But I'll wait for it

And if you go, if you go

And leave me down here on my own

Then I'll wait for you, yeah

And yeah

How long must you wait for it?

Yeah, how long must you pay for it?

Yeah, how long must you wait for it?

Singing please, please, please

Come back and sing to me, to me, me

Come on and sing it out, now, now

Come on and sing it out to me, me

Come back and sing

In my place, in my place

Were lines that I couldn't change

And I was lost, oh yeah

Oh yeah

I ran away from you

That's all I ever do

And though I started here

I ran away from you

I'm gonna come on in

And see it through

I ran away from you

That's all I ever do

And when I heard you call

"Come back to me"

I know I should stay

I don't have the stomach to

Everyone I know says

I'm a fool to mess with you

Everyone I know says

it's a stupid thing to do

I have your love on call

And yet my day is so full

There might be nothing left to do

So I ran away from you

I'm gonna come on in

My eyes are closed

I can feel it there

The sun's so close

I'm gonna come on out

And burn the sky

A star arose in my own cage

I'm stuck in life and in a cage

Just a single star

I sing for

Everyone I know

says I'm a fool mess with you

Everyone I know

says it's a stupid thing to do

I have your love on call

And yet my day is so full

And I did not know what to do

So I ran away from you

I Ran Away rules!;)

Piano-and-voice playout. Imagine: Martin hunched over the ivories' date=' offering tooth declaration that "time, time is on your side now." Nice, downplayed harmonies from the rest of the gang. Goes full-on kitchen-sink rock at the end.[/quote']

It's called Amsterdam' date=' because it was written there![/quote']

To me this song is about a young person who has almost exhausted any and all hope they once had. The part about time being on your side refers to their age I believe. They look at life even from a young person's perspective and see that it will never get any better. Even though they swear they've waited and waited' date=' people tell them they are too young to know anything. Tired of people being secretive and surpressed, he/she almost commits suicide before being rescued by someone from their depression.[/quote']

I've listened to this song with a couple of my friends and I think they were touched by this tune as well. Personally, I think there is certain universality to this song. Everyone has been in a spot where they were down and they couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel. The imagery in this song: the sickness being tied to a ball and chain that is threatening to take you over the threshold is very powerful and I certainly have been a patch in my life like this.

I think the big question is what set that person loose. Well what it was is referred to as a person; this fits in well with the theme of some of Coldplay’s work. I do think they may be referring to drugs as the savior as the title “Amsterdam” does in a roundabout way suggest. I will end the speculation there as the general theme of this piece is apparent and I think the significance of the lack of a direct reference does entail the savior of this person’s psyche’ could be just about anything.

Come on, my star is fading

And I swerve out of control

If I, if I'd only waited

I'd not be stuck here in this hole

Come here, my star is fading

And I swerve out of control

And I swear I waited and waited

I've got to get out of this hole

But time is on your side

It's on your side now

Not pushing you down and all around no

It's no cause for concern

Come on, oh my star is fading

And I see no chance of release

And I know I'm dead on the surface

But I am screaming underneath

And time is on your side

It's on your side now

Not pushing you down

And all around, no

It's no cause for concern

Stuck on the end of this ball and chain

And I'm on my way back down again

Stood on a bridge tied to a noose

Sick to the stomach

You can say what you mean

But it won't change a thing

I'm sick of our secrets

Stood on the edge, tied to the noose

You came along and you cut me loose

You came along and you cut me loose

You came along and you cut me loose

The final track to be laid down in Liverpool before the final session in Wessex Studios, London, Trouble was not always the piano-led slow-burner that it became.

Chris Martin came to the band with the main chord structure and lyrical theme in September pre-production. Initial jams produced a fast guitar riff coupled with an aggressive vocal line that seemed heavily influenced by the early Supergrass singles. On the few occasions that the song was included in the set on the Bellatrix co-headline tour of November 1999, the emphasis had shifted onto the main keyboard riff but Will's drum pattern gave the song a calypso feel that actually sounded better than you might imagine.

Come March however, the song had settled into its Parachutes mood and form. Jonny Buckland had brought in one of his most subtly affecting guitar lines and Will had slowed the pace down to incorporate a laid-back snare sound that semed to have its origins in trip-hop. On completion all agreed that this was likely to be the album's pivotal track.

According to Chris on an MTV interview he said the song represends getting in sort of trouble with someone and the analogy of a spider web is used because it's the sort of trouble you didn't mean to get into with someone.

i believe this is about someone who has been so overcome with emotions that he ends up hurting others...he feels so much that words cant explain it all and he gets frustrated...he cant even get things in order in his mind' date=' let alone to relay them to someone else...and he feels like he's going crazy...so his doubt and lack of words seems to hurt the other person...or maybe his past has just caught up with him and he's left to deal with mistakes, although he's changed as a person...he can't change what's been done[/quote']

I have a different take on this song. My situation was a bit different' date=' I was dating someone I shouldn't have been dating (she is married) and I got involved with her. She was/is a family friend she was going through some problems and I guess I was there to make her feel better about herself. Then one day out of nowhere she stopped calling. The line that says "I never meant to cause you trouble, no I never meant to cause you harm" always sticks out in my mind because if I had never gotten involved with her, we would still be talking and we would still be friends. Great song![/quote']

oh no, I see

a spiderweb is tangled up with me

and I lost my head

and thought of all the stupid things I'd said

oh no, what's this?

a spiderweb and I'm caught in the middle

so I turned to run

and thought of all the stupid things I'd done

and I never meant to cause you trouble

and I never never meant to do your wrong

ah, well if I ever caused you trouble

oh no I never meant to do you harm

oh no, I see

a spiderweb and it's me in the middle

so I twist and turn

but here am I in my little bubble

singing and I never meant to cause you trouble

and I never meant to do you wrong

ah, well if I ever caused you trouble

oh no I never meant to do you harm

"Fix You" is the second single from Coldplay's third album, X&Y. It was released on 5 September 2005 to avoid competing against Oasis' "The Importance of Being Idle" (released 22 August) on the UK Singles Chart.

When writing the song, Chris Martin was influenced by Muse's use of a church organ on the track "Megalomania" from their album Origin of Symmetry. To replicate that sound, Martin used an old keyboard that his late father-in-law (Bruce Paltrow) gave to his wife Gwyneth Paltrow. However, in other instances Martin has claimed that "Fix You" is a copy of Elbow's 2003 anthem "Grace Under Pressure".

The song is the only song by the band in which all four members of the band sing simultaneously.

The song was supported by 60 alternative rock radio stations in the United States, including WNNX (Atlanta), KNDD (Seattle), XTRA (San Diego), and WFNX (Boston). The song was also played on the popular television programme The O.C. and commercials for King Kong. The band also preformed the track at Saturday Night Live and Live 8.

The song debuted on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart on August 28, 2005. It reached #18 on the chart. "Fix You" also reached #52 on the Billboard Pop 100, #24 on the Adult Top 40, and #29 on the Hot Digital Songs chart.

On 14 September 2005, Coldplay released the Fix You EP on the iTunes Music Store. All of the sales will go to the American Red Cross Hurricane 2005 Relief and the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences’ MusiCares Hurricane Relief Fund. iTunes Link This song was also played on Shelter from the Storm. It has also became a tribute song for the victims and eventually became the anthem for the event.

Generally speaking, Coldplay videos tend to fall into two categories: those where frontman Chris Martin aimlessly wanders through nondescript locales ("Yellow," "The Scientist") and those where the full band performs in nondescript locales ("In My Place," "Clocks"). Well, the band's new video, for the song "Fix You," is different. It features a wandering Chris Martin and a full-band performance.

The video — directed by Sophie Muller (Gwen Stefani, Björk, Blur) — is actually two videos in one: scenes of a solitary Martin strolling through the streets of London at night, and concert footage shot at Coldplay's two-night stand at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton, England, last month. The whole walking thing was Martin's idea, but, as Muller recently told MTV News, she was a bit hesitant to sign off on the concept. After all, it is strangely familiar to Coldplay fans.

"It's not like I came up with the idea of 'Let's have you walking' — it was Chris' idea. I think he feels comfortable walking, and I think he likes to wander the streets of London at night," she laughed. "I was worried about it, but I thought, 'Well, the difference this time around is that he's going somewhere.' "

In the video, Martin wanders past various London landmarks, including the Royal National Theatre — onto which images of the Baudot code are projected (see "Coldplay's Album Cover Decoded (And You Thought The Lyrics Were Geeky ...)") — and King's Cross station, one of the sites of the London bombings in early July (see "At Least 37 Dead In London Subway Bombings"). Muller shot the video at King's Cross three days before the bombings, but she said that for Londoners who've seen the footage, there's a startling quality to seeing the almost eerie serenity of the area.

"It's quite strange for people to see the King's Cross sign. They watch it and they sort of gasp. They have an emotional reaction to it," Muller said. "And it's weird because the sign just made it into the video by accident. We didn't even notice it was in there until later."

Martin sings the first few verses of the song on the streets of London, but as the tempo picks up, he begins to sprint, past buildings and buses ... all the way to Bolton (ah, the magic of editing), where he takes the stage at Reebok Stadium just as the rest of Coldplay are getting into the song's chorus. According to Muller, the juxtaposition of the solitary Martin and the gigantic concert goes with the feel of the song, which moves from Martin's quiet vocals to a massive, crashing chorus.

"The idea of the video is that you go from the solitariness of the beginning of the song — where Chris is singing about trying to help people — to playing it in front of a mass of people," Muller said. "It goes from being intimate to being a massive sing-along. And everybody knew the words. It's like this: Chris has this feeling. He writes a song about it. He performs it, and then the crowd gives it back. It's like the universal artist/audience relationship."

"We tried to steal off Many Rivers To Cross but make it more about death. The first song to be recorded and we went back to the first version after 18 months."

"I put about 80 guitars on it. We took off 79 of them."

This song was written for Gwyneth's dad' date=' who died in October of 2002.[/quote']

Wow. Shows how cynical I can be without even knowing it. Perhaps due to my age (43)? This song is beautiful indeed, but first time hearing it I clearly remember thinking it was clever that the singer was being so ironic. I thought he sounded almost angry, as he said he would "fix you". The first time I thought it sounded almost like he was spitting out the words "fix you" in disdain. I really thought the song was tongue in cheek.

After all, it's not possible to fix anyone, people have to have to fix themselves. Therefore, I thought he was telling the peron what she wants to hear, but not what he believes can be done; i.e., "fix her".

After reading all the comments here, however, I agree with those who think Chris wrote this for Gwyneth after her dad died. I gather that perhaps Gwenyth was mad or sad that Chris perahps was not as helpful and supportive as he could have been through her ordeal, thus his pledge to learn from the past.

When you try your best but you don't succeed

When you get what you want but not what you need

When you feel so tired but you can't sleep

Stuck in reverse

When the tears come streaming down your face

When you lose something you can't replace

When you love someone but it goes to waste

could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home

and ignite your bones

And I will try to fix you

High up above or down below

when you too in love to let it go

If you never try you'll never know

Just what your worth

Lights will guide you home

and ignite your bones

And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down your face

When you lose something you cannot replace

Tears streaming down your face and I

Tears stream down your face

I promise you I will learn from my mistakes

Tears stream down your face and I

Lights will guide you home

And ignite your bones

And I will try to fix you

trust me. the anticipation is very clear...i won't be here for most of the top five though...

Don't Panic is the fourth release from the first album, Parachutes. This was only available to the UK as an import, the CD here was a European release.

"Don't Panic" shows a rougher, lower side to Martin's voice through the verses against a high chorus which proclaims very simply and believably that "we live in a beautiful world."

2f56ba50.jpg

This song is about how no matter how troublesome you think the world is' date=' there's always someone there to help you. I think the song is kind of odd how the tune sounds sad and the lyrics are encouraging.[/quote']

I'm glad somebody brought up the "don't panic" thing about hitch hiker's guide to the galaxy. I think it doesn't really, maybe on some subtext if you look at it like, we live in a beautiful world, but "homes, places we've grown

all of us are done for". In the beginning of the book, Arthur's house is about to be demolished, but then they're all done for because the Vogon's pave the freeway over Earth. Say so if I'm wrong, but it makes sense.

After watching the film clip, i actually thought this song had some reference to the environment in some way and its preservation and global warming.

I mean if you look at the video, its happy happy la la, and yer, then the globilisation and the oil minning and polution comes in, and there is alot of use of gas and 'energy' in this film clip, and that got me thinking about how the place floods and maybe thats got to do with global warming and rising sea level.

maybe also the lyric "bones sinking like stones" could have to do with the end of the past and the destruction we've done to the earth or maybe it is in some way making reference to 'fossil fuels' as in fossils=bones, i know thats a bit lateral, but just a thought.

bones sinking like stones

all that we fought for

homes places we've grown

all of us are done for

and we live in a beautiful world

yeah we do, yeah we do

we live in a beautiful world

bones sinking like stones

all that we fought for

homes places we've grown

all of us are done for

and we live in a beautiful world

yeah we do, yeah we do

we live in a beautiful world

and we live in a beautiful world

yeah we do, yeah we do

we live in a beautiful world

oh all that I know

there's nothing here to run from

'cos yeah everybody here's got somebody to lean on

4. Yellow

The second single, "Yellow", debuted at number four in England. Alternating between a driving electric guitar part and Chris Martin's delicate vocal line, "Yellow" owes a lot to the Radiohead school of songwriting, without seeming like a blatant rip-off.

Lyrically, "Yellow" provides a wide-eyed and innocent perspective on love ("I took my time, what a thing to do"), and consequently sounds refreshingly simple and relaxed.

The style set by "Yellow" holds true for the entire album.

The final recording session for Parachutes was dominated by the feeling of panic. Yellow had already been earmarked as an early summer single and the hope was that the album would be ready for release at around the same time. Any delays in completion would result in its release date being put back to October to co-incide with a third single. This would have been hugely disadvantageous. Everyone suspected that Yellow was a hit and therefore the perfect lead-in single for the album. Noone wanted to see an autumn release.

So the pressure was on.

Deadlines were so tight that originally the band had to forfeit travelling to New York to mix Yellow so that they could remain behind in Liverpool finishing off the album. However when the initial mix came back, the band were unimpressed. They insisted on flying out to oversee mixing themselves. This left them even less time to work on the three or four album tracks that still remained unfinished.

It is a wonder that, in the midst of such hurriedness, Yellow turned out as well as it did.

i thought this was about anorexia because when you're really anorexic, you're skin turns yellow.

Look at the stars

Look how they shine for you

And everything you do

Yeah, they were all yellow

Here he's trying to convince the girl that he loves that she's worth a lot, so much that the stars shine for HER

I came along

I wrote a song for you

And all the things you do

And it was called yellow

he wrote a song about her and her anorexia

So then I took my turn

Oh what a thing to have done

And it was all yellow

he tries to convince her to start eating again and not be "yellow". i thought the line "and it was all yellow" was just him in shock over how yellow, or sick, she looked

Your skin

Oh yeah, your skin and bones

Turn into something beautiful

You know, you know I love you so

You know I love you so

could it be "you're skin and bones"? he's telling her to start eating again because, to him, she was always beautiful

I swam across

I jumped across for you

Oh what a thing to do

i think this means that he didn't shy away from her, but actually tried to help her. he got over his own problems and tried to be there for her as much as he could

Cos you were all yellow

I drew a line

I drew a line for you

Oh what a thing to do

And it was all yellow

here he's saying, if you don't try to get better then i'll break up with you. he's still in shock over how sick she looks

Your skin

Oh yeah your skin and bones

Turn into something beautiful

And you know for you

I'd bleed myself dry for you

I'd bleed myself dry

now he's begging her, saying he would love her no matter what, he'd die for her, but he doesn't want her to die

It's true, look how they shine for you

Look how they shine for you

Look how they shine for

Look how they shine for you

Look how they shine for you

Look how they shine

his world revolves around her

Look at the stars

Look how they shine for you

And all the things that you do

she's so special to him

i don't know, that was just my interpretation. that seemed more likely to me then a simple love song, drugs or happiness. it seems too sad to be about happiness. like...bitter sweet

look at the stars

look how they shine for you

and everything you do

yeah they were all yellow

I came along

I wrote a song for you

and all the things you do

and it was called yellow

So then I took my turn

oh wh at a thing to have done

and it was all yellow

your skin

oh yeah your skin and bones

turn into something beautiful

and you know

you know I love you so

you know I love you so

I swam across

I jumped across for you

oh what a thing to do

'cos you were all yellow

I drew a line

I drew a line for you

oh what a thing to do

and it was all yellow

and your skin

oh yeah your skin and bones

turn into something beautiful

and you know

for you I bleed myself dry

for you I bleed myself dry

it's true

look how they shine for you

look how they shine for you

look how they shine for

look how they shine for you

look how they shine for you

look how they shine

look at the stars

look how they shine for you

"Look at Earth from outer space' date='" implores our cosmically inclined frontman. Comes on with a guitar/drum tattoo, rat-tat-tatting away like a persistant woodpecker. Coldplay's piano is back too: chiming spookily in the studio attic. This track was written on the same week as the September 11 tragedy.[/quote']

Politik was performed at Grammys...with orchestra!!!

2.jpg

http://youtube.com/watch?v=tLlkNrckAHI

i think the song is about how everybody is following everybody else and to take a step back and look at the world and make a change for your self' date=' i.e make you own desions. I think the song is absolute quality best song on the album and exellent song to start of the album, because its so powerful.[/quote']

I thought I'd share something that I found to be particularly unique about this song. Many of you have commented on the lyrics and some have certainly alluded to the music from this song. Interestingly though, I think that it is the two together than makes this song incredible.

The lyrics at the beginning of the song (whether they are political or personal...i tend to think that they are both) point to a certain unrest that Martin is feeling. For him, something isn't entirely right with the current state of things. He calls us out as listeners, asking us to consider what we believe (tell me your own politik) and to wake up and look around at what is happening (open up your eyes). Throughout the first half of the song we see a seemingly frustrated Martin singing. The music that backs up the lyrics certainly expresses this frustration, this unrest. It's almost as if the band wrote the music for the first half of this song specifically with a certain sense of disorder and chaos to compliment the lyrics.

But then, something changes. A few piano-driven chord changes lead to one of the most beautiful melodies I've heard in awhile. Whatever chaos reigned before in the song is almost instantly forgotton about. Martin profoundly (and simply) declares the focal point for which the song is pulled from its chaotic and frustrating state into a more peaceful, more hopeful, and more beautiful environment during the second half of the song. This focal point is love (but give me love over this).

There are few songs that I know of that bring the lyrics and music together so well as Politik does. I think this is, for me, why this song is so powerful, because the music has its own message in and of itself (from chaos to harmony)...

Look at earth from outer space

Everyone must find a place

Give me time and give me space

Give me real, don't give me fake

Give me strength, reserve control

Give me heart and give me soul

Give me time, give us a kiss

Tell me your own Politik

And open up your eyes

Open up your eyes

Open up your eyes

Just open up your eyes

Give me one, 'cause one is best

In confusion, confidence

Give me piece of mind and trust

Don't forget the rest of us

Give me strength, reserve control

Give me heart and give me soul

Wounds that heal and cracks that fix

Oh Love, tell me your own politik

And open up your eyes

Open up your eyes

Open up your eyes

Just open up your eyes

But give me love over, love over, love over this

And give me love over, love over, love over this

Awww :disappointed:
