Oh wait. Marvin Gaye is the man with voice.

Now you're talking!! He had an amazing voice, as did Luther Vandross, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson and Nat King Cole.

As for women, the greatest female singer ever is still around - none other than Aretha Franklin. I've never heard another voice that comes close........................

If I exclude opera or classic singers, I'll say :

Male : Jeff Buckley, Stephen Morrissey, Thom Yorke, Matthew Bellamy, Franck Sinatra.

Female : Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera.

With special mention to Jeff Buckley and Nina Simone : two extraordinay voices IMO.

By the way, I don't think Enya has a great voice at all : there's so much echo on her records that I can't really hear the sound of her voice.

Female : Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera.

The first three are good choices, but Mariah Carey only screeches and Christina Aguilera has an extremely limited vocal range.

Jocelyn Brown beats both of them hands-down!!

MALE: Chris Martin, Bono, Fran Healey...

Mariah Carey can sing higher notes than anyone else in all of your lists, even if I hate the stuff she does, and I simply love Christina Aguilera's voice - I mean the sound, the colour of her voice (don't know how to say it in English).

Maybe, but it's completely soulless, which is what matters. Opera singers can sing higher than anybody, but generally I can't stand their style (particularly the women) as it isn't easy on the ear.............................. Mariah Carey's exactly the same, and so is Bjork, for that matter.

Whitney Houston's fallen by the wayside of late, but she always sounded way better than Mariah because of the "soul" factor.;)

I thought the thread was about the voice...

It is..................................

ermm all i can think about right now are Jonsi,Chris Martin and Jonas.

BONO, BONO, BONO - when he's singing live, amazing voice.

I really like Jeff Buckley also, but he was very inconsistent live - out of tune and all over the place in some live recordings.

I also don't like women's voices - too many nowadays warble all over the place (Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, the one that sang with U2 at the Grammys and ruined the song!)

Mary J. Blige^

I like her though.

hmm. I also like Jill Scott and Angie Stone. And that gospel singer Yolanda Adams- what happened to her????

And I can't believe I forgot Chris Martin!

*EDIT* JENNIFER HUDSON! The Girl from DreamGirls. O M G.

Mary J. Blige^

I like her though.

Mary J Blige is good but I didn't like her duet with Bono either.

I definitely agree with you on Jill Scott and Angie Stone. They are real singers, unlike Pariah.;)

For female...hmm I love Imogen Heap! For voice is melodic as well...

Gosh! I was waiting for someone to mention her! She rocks. :D

Kay, here's my [incomplete] list...

Guys: Matt Bellamy, Chris Martin and uh... Serj Tankian? :D ...

Gals: Fiona Apple, Imogen Heap, and my sister! :D

i dont like female singers

That sounded really sexist. :laugh3:

Fine, I won't sing in the shower anymore. :(

I love Jeff Buckley's live recordings, his voice sounds great when it is "all over the place". He had the voice no-one else has. So unique. :)

Absolutely right.

I guess I should really listen to Jeff Buckley. He seems to be the most popular one here. I only know him because a version of Hallelujah plays at the end of Basquiat, and I found Jeff Buckley's version on the internet. Beautiful song. Great movie.

uh... Serj Tankian? :D ...

I like his voice...

Yeah, so do I... just not sure how many people here do. :P

Well, he used to have a very large vocal range. He made one album, Grace, then just before starting the recording of his second one, My Sweetheart The Drunk, drowned in LA. They released a double CD with his sketches for this album.

But Grace is a masterpiece, so maybe you should give it a listen. Hallelujah is on it.

I also truly recommend Grace. It could be the one of the best albums ever made.

Actually, Jeff Buckley drowned in Memphis while swimming in the Wolf River, a tributary of the Mississippi - total accident, no drugs/alcohol involved. Great loss to the music world!! I also highly recommend Grace - fantastic album.

Hallelujah isn't actually a Jeff Buckley song though, is it?
