HD-DVD goes beyond 50GB with new disc

Toshiba has announced a new 51GB HD-DVD Rom disc at this year's CES.

Beating Blu-ray by 1GB, Toshiba today said that they had successfully created a triple layer HD-DVD disc that could contain 51GB worth of data with 17GB on each layer.

"Continued improvement in disc mastering technology has achieved further minimization in the recording pit, supporting a further boost in capacity to 17GB in single layer and a full 51GB on a single-sided triple-layer disc. Toshiba has confirmed the disc structure and its successful operation." said the press release. "This time-tested physical structure offers proven volume manufacturing at little cost increment."

Toshiba has now closed the storage gab with Blu-ray, which can store 50GB on a dual-layered disc. It will be exciting to see if this has any effect on the raging format war. Stay tuned.

Why do you really need 50GB on a disc?

The average full HD film takes up about 6GB, add some pointless extras which you will only watch one, and you come to about 7 GB.

But it's good, because I prefer HD-DVD over Sony's Blu-Ray, because Sony is evil.

Just because they can! shrug.gif

just because you can put all ur music library in it and be safe:)

Nice...but who cares about a 1GB difference??? Who says sony is evil???? You should be grateful..imagine life without the playstation and all those other awesome gadgets!!

Are you forgetting Sony's massive fuck-up a couple years ago when they put rootkits on CDs to prevent you copying from them, and left your computer up to attack???

That did not affect me at all..so therefore does not bother me at all.

We all have standard DVD film dual layer discs that come to around that size...6-7GB.

Full quality, full bit rate, uncompressed HD Video in 1080p needs more.

Transfer rates on standard DVD average about 5 Mbps and max out at 9 Mbps. Standard HDTV broadcast is at 19.4 Mbps.

Clearly in the range of performance defined by DVD and HDTV as encoded in MPEG-2, more data and higher bit rates produce better images. Today's HDTV broadcasts on high resolution video displays look extremely good, and certainly they are head and shoulders above DVD.....

Now, HD-DVD's maximum bit rate of 36.55 Mbps is about double that of broadcast HDTV. That by itself is enough to enable it to deliver spectacular picture and sound, the likes of which we have not yet experienced.
