I didn't know there was such a genre. I'll have to look into it. Sounds like something I might like.

Someone was talking about Blackfield earlier in the thread (Steve Wilson's side project) , I like them, but i think Porcupine Tree are better. I dont know, it just seems like someone else is writing the lyrics, and Wilson is singing it for them - although i do like quite alot of their songs.

I prefer pT as well, but Blackfield are pretty cool.

^I haven't seen alot on here.

I prefer pT as well

Well I love PT. I haven't listened to any very second of Blackfield (I'm waiting for the time when I know all PT stuff, then I'll get interested in sideprojects). I saw PT live in Paris on December 3rd and it was totally mindblowing. I particularly appreciated Anesthetize, which was really awesome live.

D'you really think there can be such diversity in metal bands ? I'm not fond of all those genre-category stuff. Why can't we say they're just Metal ?

And I gotta say the symphonic death metal made me laugh. I'm trying to imagine how this can sound and... Sorry.

Anyway, all these categories and sub-categories are just plain daft if you ask me.:dozey:

The day after PT played in Toronto, I found out about it. I nearly cried!

I'm not a huge metal fan, but I have to say in all fairness, that some of the symphonic stuff I've heard is quite good.

But I do agree we don't need so many genres and sub-genres. For example, what's the difference between Death Metal, Black Metal and Doom Metal? Sounds like pretty much the same thing to me...

Shit no!!! But i don't have the time to explain all these things, especially to non-metal fans.

Well as it's completely irrelevant, then it doesn't matter anyway.:smug:

You can get treatment for that fortunately.........................

Good to know. If I were too crazy about it, I'd be metally ill!

Dragonforce, anyone like them, I think they can be considered symphonic metal, maybe I'm wrong though...

Yeah they can be considered symphonic in some way, yeah i do like some DragonForce albums...

I love Progressive rock music. :) I mostly like the classic bands, like Genesis, ELP, Electric Light Orchestra, Kansas, King Crimson, Yes, Gentle Giant, Nektar, Rush, etc, although I do enjoy some of the current prog bands (like Tool, Dream Theater, Opeth, The Mars Volta, Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, Marillion, Glass Hammer, The Flower Kings, etc.)

I wish Genesis would get back together and put out a new album. That would be sweet.

I like Progressive Metal..not Prog Rock.

me too.

i like old stuff (ELP, Rush, Pink Floyd and of course, Yes!) and current bands (DT, Symphony X, Spock's Beard, Ayreon, Porcupine Tree) and is exploring new horizon :)

anyone has recommendation for current prog bands? symphonic, math, prog-metal, neo-prog, or any kind of prog?

^^ Echoyn, Magic Pie, The Tangent, Galleon, Riverside, Glass Hammer, The Pineapple Thief are some really great current prog bands. Also, if you like early Genesis, check out The Watch - they write music that's eerily similar to PG-era Genesis (the lead singer even sounds like Peter Gabriel.)

Hmmm....

Aghora

Black Bonzo

Titan

Zombi

Don Caballero

Big Big Train

Canvas Solaris

Porcupine Tree

C-187

Meshuggah

Kosmos.......but to name a few for dead_cold.

Love the sort of true progressive music that Radiohead and Muse are part of. Other bands in this category include Amplified, Oceansize, Pure Reason Revolution, The Pineapple Thief, Elbow etc. This is not prog rock in the tradional sense but progressive music that is intelligent, takes an influence from the early bands but adds a modern twist. Some prog forums even put Coldplay in here. 42 is pure progressive rock.

You bagged prog before...:dozey: :dozey:

I'm quite a prog rock fan: Genesis (who doesn't like it?), Yes, some King Crimson (Three of a Perfect Pair FTW!), Genesis, Supertramp, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Genesis, Supertramp, Led Zeppelin (i'm not sure if it's prog), Radiohead (it's just me or it looks a lot like prog?) and finally, Genesis.

Wait! Am I gettin' crazy or I said Genesis twice? :stunned:

@ RICK8, shipoffools, chillinrevev

wow, thanks for the list! which one of them is math-prog bands? if i know or like any math-prog band, my progger friend will salute me :smug:

I know few of your list: Porcupine Tree (Steven Wilson is genius, don't you think?), Riverside and Oceansize.

i'll check out the rest ;)

@ mc_squared

what do you think of Arena? this band sounds like Fish-era Marillion. i listen to their -probably- best album, 'the visitor'. it's a great album ...

i don't listen that much to Genesis... don't know why i don't like them. to me, Yes is better. i even like the 'Drama', an album without Jon Anderson...

i think Muse has prog element in their music. but my progger friends laugh at me for saying it :veryangry:
