Coldplay's New "Oblique" Album

Featured Replies

I found this very interesting:

In the most recent "star" on the Coldplay.com time line, the Studio Diary entry from Prospekt reveals:

"Chris just burst into my little room upstairs at the studio. He's been working on lyrics. Much more abstract, much more visual than before. This is reflected in the music too: less straight-forward, more oblique."

While browsing the new Coldplay site I found an old article in the 2005 section which relates to their new sound, in a way. After severely criticizing Coldplay's new album, "X&Y", Jon Pareles from the New York Times states:

"In its early days, Coldplay could easily be summed up as Radiohead minus Radiohead's beat, dissonance or arty subterfuge. Both bands looked to the overarching melodies of 1970's British rock and to the guitar dynamics of U2, and Mr. Martin had clearly heard both Bono's delivery and the way Radiohead's Thom Yorke stretched his voice to the creaking point.

Unlike Radiohead, though, Coldplay had no interest in being oblique or barbed. From the beginning, Coldplay's songs topped majesty with moping: "We're sinking like stones," Mr. Martin proclaimed."

You can read the full article here.

Hm...I hope they don't try to be anything they are not...:laugh4:

*cough Radiohead cough*

If anything, the only thing Chris should change about his lyrics are all the contradictions.:laugh4:

Hahaha! is so true. But I like them.

I don't blame Chris is he wants to evolve as a writer. As you get older, the things you write about change...it should be interesting to hear the new lyrics since he's so obsessive. He'll probably drive himself crazy trying to expand his lyrical style. It'll be fascinating no matter what he comes out with.:)

I think of parablas and internal/external oblique abdominal muscle. hahahaha

Whatever works boys!

I'm really looking forward to this "oblique" album as long as it isn't oblique for the sake of it. :)

This is something you'll be stuck with choosing that line of profession - I can tell you from first hand experience. ;)

Aaaanyway, there's nothing wrong with guys and their oblique abs.

Hahahaha what if all this "oblique" and "breast" news is hinting that the album will have a strong basis on body parts?!

A true curveball from coldplay, but whatever Chris sings about will no doubt be marvelous.

Hell he could sing about his ass for 5 min and I'd be interested, haha

ive been thinking a lot about this since i first saw this post.

in my opinion, coldplay has three main types of songs: literal, metaphorical and oblique. i think that in the literal ones, they/chris are saying pretty much exactly what he means, (like most of "the scientist", "yellow" and "shiver"), the metaphorical ones employ an image to directly convey an idea or feeling (like in "fix you" or "swallowed in the sea"), and the oblique ones use lots of different and seemingly random images that all fit together to convey an idea or feeling (like "sleeping sun", "clocks", and "the world turned upside down"). i think the guys started out pretty literal with songs like "shiver" and "yellow" and "in my place", but really moved towards the metaphorical on x&y, and then tried out oblique on the later b-sides off x&y (even though i consider "clocks" and even "dont panic" to be pretty oblique). i think so far, all this oblique stuff has worked for them (i mean, i like all the songs they've done so far in an oblique way, and mine is the only opinion i have to go on), but somehow im afraid if they decide to abandon the literal lyrics (which i love so much) and dive into a world that they havent explored much. i think im afraid they wont be able to successfully pull it off in every song. im afraid theyll turn into radiohead for me, because i LOVE radiohead's first two albums, but i just cant really listen to anything after ok computer (and even thats pretty far out for me) because their lyrics have completely changed along with their musical direction and a lot of the songs lack melody, etc. ill be heartbroken if i can only really enjoy the first three albums and that i cant get into their later stuff. i wont be able to bear it.

ah, who knows if that even makes any sense? its just what i think and hope.

This sounds like it's going to be a real humm-dinger of an album.

Haha, I had to look up oblique.

But I like the sound of it.

same here! :laugh4:

*cough Radiohead cough*

aye, me as well.

Awhisper21 - I get your point. I wouldn't like them to be the new Radiohead or something ... because that's just not them. I do love Radiohead  but I like Coldplay the way they are (though a bit of style change isn't a bad idea ;))

ummm, oblique?

I guess it's okay.

But I only guess.

Can't wait.

I know that Brian Eno's music can be oblique, but when he's worked with U2 in the past, U2 still retained their own style and just incorporated some of his influences.

And speaking of Brian Eno...in April, he was working with Coldplay, and now in June, he's working the U2.

He certainly stays busy!

Bucket for a Crown is the lastest new stuff we have on coldplay, if im not mistaken..., and if thats the direction their going then im all for it.

i think bucket for a crown may be the reason im somewhat nervous about the whole oblique style of things...i wasnt impressed. then again, apparently chris wrote it the night before in his hotel room or whatever, so it was more like a random little ditty than a real product that we'd see on an album, i guess.

even musically though...

Yeah I believe Bucket for a Crown was more of a taste of new material, but i think their TRUE new stuff will be much different. They were supposed to unveil something for the Latin America Tour but nothing happened there.

It's hard to know what to expect at this point. Maybe they'll make a suprise appearence at Glastonbury? ;D

I don't think Bucket for a Crown will be on the album and certainly not in it's current form.

Like someone siad - I might be wrong.
