After facing yet another injury setback, it appears the stress of David Beckham's troubled football career is beginning to taking its toll.

It was clear during 32-year-old's latest LA outing that his once prized head of golden locks is starting to thin out.

 

The balding star appeared in public for the first time after suffering a knee injury which has ruled the £125million player out of two vital European championship Qualifiers for England.

With knee and ankle supports on show, the England star was snapped wearing the strappings as he left an LA sports clinic after sustaining the injury during a game for LA Galaxy on Wednesday night.

Beckham was accompanied by son Brooklyn, who no doubt tried his best to keep his father's spirit up.

 

 

 

 

This latest injury has ruled him out of England's crucial forthcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Russia.

A scan has confirmed the problem as a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee which will keep him out for between four and six weeks. Beckham, 32, is also suffering an ankle injury picked up last season.

According to the MLS club, Beckham is likely to be out for between four and six weeks, keeping him out of Steve McClaren's squad for the Wembley clashes with Israel, on September 8, and Russia four days later.

And he could now also struggle to be fit for the qualifiers with Estonia and Russia, on October 13 and 17, respectively.

Another injury means David is likely to miss the rest of Galaxy's Major League Soccer season as he will be out of action for four to six weeks.

 

 

Suddenly the £125 million he was paid to go over to the US looks an even more expensive deal than anyone first thought.

Beckham tripped over the ball when challenging Pachuca midfielder Fernando Salazar.

 

His premature departure from the match comes less than a fortnight after he managed his first league start for Galaxy.

 

A long-standing ankle injury kept him from playing a full 90 minutes for his first appearances for the club - and any hopes that the problem was fully behind him evaporated in recent days when he started feeling the effects of the injury again.

Now this latest injury is prompting speculation about his future.

The extraordinary £125 million five-year deal — financed by Major League Soccer as well as the club itself — is about raising the profile of "soccer" in the US rather than just securing a famous player for the LA team, but so far the increase in media attention for what at the moment is a minority sport has been tempered by a rash of negative publicity for the club.

 

Supporters have been riled by his noshows, and the cynicism of those exploiting the Beckham phenomenon has started to cause a backlash among fans.

 

 

When Galaxy played away to New England, supporters could only get tickets by buying a "Beckham package" which included three other matches or attending in a large group - only to discover that Beckham was not going to play.

And now this. Last night's clash with Salazar saw Beckham remain face down on the grass for a few seconds before limping to the sidelines.

 

He made his way to a wall on the sideline, bent over and held on to it before a Galaxy staff member arrived to help him to the bench.

 

 

Posh is nursing her own battered pride

 

He sat down and had his right leg taped, then buried his head in his hands.

At halftime, Beckham gingerly walked across the field to the tunnel.

 

 

He did not return for the second half. His injury may been exacerbated by Galaxy's exhausting schedule combined with his England commitments - Beckham had to contend with playing two games on back-to-back days last week.

 

After playing against Germany at Wembley last Wednesday he then turned out for Galaxy against Chivas in Los Angles 24 hours later.

 

 

But whatever the reason, fans seem to be beginning to run out of patience.

 

When Alan Gordon replaced Beckham in the 33rd minute, it triggered massive booing from the crowd of 12,500.

 

While Beckham struggles with his injury problems, his wife Victoria - fresh from her less than successful attempts to revive her singing career - is having to come to terms with the fact that her attempts to launch a US television career have not got entirely to plan.

 

The documentary about her arrival in the US, Coming To America, was virtually ignored by the public - pulling in just 4.9 million viewers.

 

The critics gave the show a severe drubbing. The New York Post called the fly-on-the-wall documentary - designed to show that Victoria has a sense of humour about herself - "an orgy of self-indulgence".

When Victoria Beckham and Eva Longoria arrived at LA's Chateau Marmont hotel for dinner, eating was clearly not on the evening's agenda.

The glamorous pair chatted and sipped white wine but barely touched their food.

 

"They had bruschetta and an artichoke dip on the table, but I never saw Eva eat a thing," said one eyewitness. Victoria reportedly "nibbled", but only a little.

It seems that eating out with Victoria has the same effect as taking a very strong appetite suppressant. And Eva, always noted for her slim but curvy frame, is shrinking fast.

The Desperate Housewife appears to have become the latest member of Posh's skinny brigade - a select group of women striving to emulate their size zero leader.

 

And their numbers are growing.

When the Spice Girls were photographed together recently, it was reported that no one wanted to stand next to Victoria - and it wasn't because they didn't like her. Being alongside someone as tiny as she is would make anyone look, and feel, large.

 

Just ask Katie Holmes. When Victoria's best pal was pictured standing beside her at the Paris fashion shows last year, the slim actress appeared to be at least three sizes bigger.

 

Since that week away, however, Katie appears to have been shrinking. Mrs Cruise looks to have lost more than 2st since the birth of baby Suri a year-and-a-half ago, largely through diet tips from her British friend (lots of strawberries, sushi and seaweed shakes).

At 5ft 8in, Katie has dropped to an estimated 125lb (just over 81/2st) and is rumoured to have a 26in waist.

 

But even that is not enough.

The slim star has been caught by paparazzi wearing Spanx girdles underneath her dresses, and at the "Welcome to LA" party she organised for the Beckhams, Katie made sure she sipped low-calorie fruit-flavoured drinks instead of fattening cocktails.

A recent study by the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that obesity is socially contagious, and you can catch it from friends the way you catch a virus; a "fat flu", if you like.

 

Nicholas Christakis, professor of healthcare policy at Harvard Medical School and co-author of the study, said: "A person becoming obese most likely causes a change of norms about what counts as an appropriate body size.

"People come to think that it is OK to be bigger since those around them are bigger, and this sensibility spreads."

 

But does it work the other way? Can being around someone who is thinner than you change what you consider a normal frame? Is there a "skinny flu"?

 

Dr James Fowler, co-author of the study, says: "Consciously or unconsciously, people look to others when deciding how much to eat, how much to exercise and how much weight is "too much".

 

"Social effects are much stronger than people realise. It's important to remember that we've not only shown that obesity is contagious, but thinness is, too."

 

Nutritional psychologist and author Marc David agrees: "Like it or not, we are creatures of our environment. If you linger in a room full of sleeping people, you're likely to start feeling tired. But enter a ballroom party and you're likely to be ready to dance."

 

When Kate Moss dumped Pete Doherty following his affair with another model, she was whisked away to Marbella by a group of her closest friends.

Davinia Taylor, Holly Davidson and Rose Ferguson joined the supermodel at a luxury villa in an effort to help her mend her broken heart.

 

Also on hand was Kate's new friend, Kelly Osbourne.

Perhaps it is just a coincidence that the singer, always known for her lovely rounded curves, appeared to have lost a stone when pictured walking alongside a waif-like Kate on the beach.

 

According to Amanda Baten, a nutritional psychologist trained in cognitive behavioural therapy: "Women are often pitted against each other by the media and bombarded by messages from society regarding the ideal woman type.

"I see this often with the adolescent girl population, who actually "one-up" each other with the number of pounds lost, laxatives taken, times they have purged and calories burned."

 

Who can forget those photos of a skeletal-looking Teri Hatcher jogging through Hollywood with weights in both hands and bones painfully outlined?

 

Her devotion to fitness has not been lost on her friends.

Not long after those photos appeared, Teri's Desperate Housewives co-star Marcia Cross was spotted dining at an Indian restaurant with Tom Mahoney (now her husband). According to one eyewitness: "He ordered sea bass and prawns, but she just opted to sip on an endless succession of fruit juices."

 

Marcia recently admitted to the pressure she feels to be thin. "For me, not eating is a constant struggle," she said. "It's like they pay me not to eat. It's a living hell."

 

The most famous example of "skinny flu" spreading was on the American TV show Ally McBeal.

Actress Courtney Thorne-Smith has talked openly about the pressure she felt from having stick-thin co-stars such as Calista Flockhart and Portia de Rossi.

Citing exhaustion, Courtney eventually asked to be released from her contract on the hit show.

 

She admitted: "I started undereating, over-exercising, pushing myself too hard and brutalising my immune system. The amount of time I spent thinking about food and being upset about my body was insane."

 

Her co-star Vonda Shepard, when asked about her work on the show, added: "We're all on the same diet - Calista, Portia and I. Everyone in Hollywood is."

 

"It's just salad and steamed vegetables, and maybe a little bit of protein such as grilled fish or boiled chicken without the skin. No pasta, no bread. It's so boring."

 

Psychologist Amanda says: "Collective obsessional behaviour can contribute to, and even dictate, the view of what the 'ideal' weight should be. This can often result in real illnesses as well as low self-esteem."

 

It seems "skinny flu" is everywhere in Hollywood.

 

Sex And The City star Kristin Davis has admitted that she was pushed into the opposite response: binge eating.

 

"I was on a project with a lot of very thin women," she said. "I would stand next to them all day and I'd start to think: 'I guess I should try to look like that.'

"Everyone would talk about their diets and working out, and what it made me do was to go to craft service - where all the food for the cast and crew was - and I would eat. That was my reaction. It was not healthy, but the pressure of it all was upsetting."

 

According to nutritional psychologist Marc, the need to win at being thin is a very female response.

"Men are competitive in business, in sports, in games," he says.

"Women are often competitive, and silently so, in weight and beauty. Men might compete to see who can eat more; women will compete to see who can eat less. Have you ever heard one woman remark to another: 'Did you see how much she ate?' I don't think I've ever heard a man say anything like that."

 

And what about food mirroring? Do we tend to eat what our friends do? When Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox Arquette worked together on Friends, they began to shed weight from their already ultra-slim frames.

 

On set, the best friends often ate the exact same thing.

In the morning, it was a bagel with the bread scooped out making a shell and, therefore, a less carb-heavy load.

For lunch they ordered the same low-calorie salad consisting of turkey, lettuce, chickpeas, pecorino cheese and lemon dressing.

 

Courteney admitted recently: "There was a period during Friends when I was really, really thin. I thought I looked great; in retrospect, I didn't.!

 

Amanda Baten says: "We tend to find friends who have the same interests, similar upbringings, wear the same clothes and often even look like us.

"This kind of mimicking is manifest in how, when and what we eat.

"Therefore, it is likely that the eating habits of a group of friends, regardless of how healthy or not they may be, will be contagious - at least, while eating together."

 

So how can you stop "skinny flu" from spreading?

Amanda advises getting reliable information about the consequences of yo-yo weight loss and calorie restriction: "Most women would not choose to starve themselves if they knew the long-term metabolic and ageing consequences of such obsessional behaviours."

 

And Marc recommends spending time with people who have a healthy attitude towards food: !Habits, whether good or bad ones, are contagious.

 

"I encourage my clients to be in the company of those who have a healthy relationship with food and their body.

"For just as we absorb nutrients from what we eat, we also absorb the world view of those who walk alongside us."

Victoria Beckham has taken her obsession with haute couture to a jaw-dropping new extreme.

Posh turned heads as she arrived at a shoot in Paris dressed in vertiginous heels and a curious orange feather confection that plumed around her tiny frame.

 

It was her latest effort to carve out her niche as a cutting edge fashionista, but onlookers couldn't help but draw comparisons between puffy Posh and Sesame Street's Big Bird.

 

Earlier that day Posh had attempted to upstage the Princess Diana inquest, strutting out of the Ritz hotel minutes before the jury were due to leave on a visit to the spot where Diana was killed.

Just two days ago she was vamping it up for a Elle photoshoot in Paris.

But last night Posh proved that, even with the most expensive skin treatments, a girl can't beat the scourge of pimples.

 

 

Minus the make-up and mood lighting, Posh's Braille-like forehead was impossible to hide as she left Geri Halliwell's Hampstead home after an evening there with fellow Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm.

She is also preparing to hit the stage again - much earlier than expected.

 

The Spice Girls are planning to perform in Hollywood at this year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, according to reports.

 

A source told Us magazine: "[They] are rehearsing for it already. It's going to be their big comeback appearance."

 

They are set to appear at the high-profile lingerie show on November 15, three weeks before the official world tour kicks off in Vancouver.

 

The annual fashion show is a highly anticipated fixture on Hollywood's social calendar.

 

Last year, pop star Justin Timberlake gave a knock-out performance of his hit SexyBack while the likes of Gisele Bundchen strutted around him on the catwalk.
